Accreditation Status

The MSC Artisan Academy (Pty) Ltd is a registered private

company Reg. No: 2010/005795/07 and has provider

accreditation with merSETA (17-QA/ACC/0536/10).

IntroductIon

The Master Artisan Academy South Africa (MAASA) has

been established in response to the general decline in

the quality and supply of artisan training that over time

resulted in a critical shortage of high level technical

skills in South Africa. MAASA aims to positively

contribute towards increasing the general standard of

artisanship in South Africa in the following focus-areas:

� Electrical Engineering

� Mechanical Engineering (inclusive of Welding and Fitting)

� Renewable Energy Solutions (Green Energy)

Our approach to training is based on traditional artisan

principles and skills, strongly underpinned by German

craftsmanship and training methodology. An integrated

training approach (blended learning) is followed where

theory is embedded in practical exercises and projects.

This is achieved through our well-equipped and modern

workshops/laboratories, supported by experienced

and skilled instructors, and applied through structured

workplace-based learning.

General Enrolment Conditions

Course Duration

Courses are offered as per programme schedule, but can

be tailored-made to suit the employer’s needs.

Language of Instruction

Instruction and course material is in English.

Tools and Equipment

The trainee will be issued with the required tools for the

duration of the programme that he/she enrolled for. Any

missing or damaged tools/equipment will be charged to

the account of the trainee or employer.

our FacIlItIes

The layout and design of our training facilities cater for

the infrastructure and equipment required for practical

simulation used in our training philosophy.

The facilities consist of:

� Registration and Administration Offices;

� Instruction Rooms;

� Engineering Workshop (Fitting/Handskills);

� Welding Workshop;

� Electrical Engineering Workshop (Single Phase);

� Industrial Motor Control Workshop;

� Solar Thermal Laboratory;

� Photovoltaic/Wind-Power Laboratory;

� Industry Process Automation Laboratory.

traInIng wIth the academy

All training at MAASA is geared towards providing trainees

with sufficient skills, knowledge and attitudes to carry out

their work effectively and efficiently in a competitive and

technologically advanced industry. It should lead either to

improved performance of employees and employment for

the unemployed.

Modes of Delivery

Training at MAASA is offered by means of the following:

� Learnerships;

� Apprenticeships;

� Skills Programmes (Credit Bearing);

� Short Programmes (Company Specific).

Target Audience

Our training programmes cater for trainees (learners) who:

� Want to enter the labour market, but are unskilled and

unemployed.

Trainees receive original printed copies of learner guides,

workbooks as well as portfolio of evidence logbooks.

Trainees have access to the latest tools and equipment

relevant to the specific training for the duration of the course.

Rotation between structured learning at MAASA and

workplace-based learning is dependent on the mode of

training and the particular NQF-Level.

Learner Progress and Evaluation

Continuous assessments (formative) are conducted

throughout the delivery of each learning programme and

form the basis for the Final Summative Assessment. A

Learner Progress Report is issued after completion of

each module.

Instruction

All instructors at MAASA are highly qualified and

experienced artisans, well supported by workshop

assistants for the practical components. Group sizes are

not more than 15 for the practical modules.

� Are employed and have acquired some skills, knowledge

and work experience, but lack formal training.

� Are enrolled in an apprenticeship or learnership and

need to complete some outstanding formal modules/unit

standards.

� Are qualified, but would like to upskill with specialised

courses.

Training Roll-Out

For learnerships and apprenticeships a training schedule

or project plan is drawn up in agreement between the

relevant clients (workplace hosts), the trainees (learners)

and MAASA.

Skills programmes are either offered as per MAASA

training schedule or could be company specific as per

arrangement with the client.

Training Resources

Training is conducted in MAASA workshops, laboratories,

instruction-rooms, “On-site Simulators” and industry

workplaces.

� Full-time: 40 days (8 weeks)

Pieter Bosch

Director

Pieter Rudolph Bosch, is an Honours

Graduate from the University of

Stellenbosch with further Post

Graduate qualifications in Management and Marketing.

He is also a past President of the Border Kei Chamber

of Business and is a Shareholder and Director in a

number of  Eastern Cape companies, ranging from the

Automotive to the Renewable Energy sectors.

Willy Gauss [German]

Director

Willy has extensive historical roots

in the South African Motor Industry

and is a director and shareholder of

companies such as Autopipe (Pty) Ltd, Ikhwezi Automotive

(Pty) Ltd and Foxtec Ikhwezi (Pty) Ltd. He is also engaged in

industries producing products for the renewable energy sector.

These companies include Ikhwezi Solar (Pty) Ltd, Ikhwezi

Unplugged (Pty) Ltd and Gehrlicher Ikhwezi (Pty) Ltd. Willy

Cobus Potgieter

Managing Director

BA Hons Strategic Studies

In 1991 Cobus Potgieter, founded

MSC Business College. He saw the

need for practical hands-on training in the Managerial,

Secretarial and Computer fields. Cobus has twenty years

management experience with large corporations where

motivation and training of staff were of utmost importance.

Cobus’ responsibilites for the franchised business include

control of the concept, look, integrity and the strategic

growth of the company.

Cobus identified the critical shortages of skilled artisans

in South Africa and the need to overcome these. In

response he established the Master Artisan Academy of

South Africa (MAASA). Cobus carefully selected a highly

skilled and dedicated management and operational team

who are determined to answer this critical need in South

Africa by presenting accredited and practical training.

Gillian Davies [British]

Director: Finance

B Compt (Hons) - (UNISA)

Gillian is the Financial Manager

of the MSC Head Office group of

companies and is responsible for all finance and human

resource related functions. Gillian has over eighteen years

of financial experience. She completed her articles as a

trainee accountant with an international firm after which

she served two years as an audit supervisor. Gillian took

a position in the Commercial Sector as an accountant

for a national company and thereafter she took up the

challenging position as a management consultant. During

this time she was involved in various projects ranging

from planning through to implementation. The majority of

these focused on business processes and finance with a

view to enhance systems and procedures.

has also been a board member of the Transkei Development

Corporation and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation.

Willie Gresse

Director: Operations

BCom (HDE)

Willie has over 17 year experience

in adult training and education of

which 5½ years was as the Deputy Director: Education

and Training at a Public FET College. During that time

he was involved in the implementation of the National

Certificate Vocational (NCV) at colleges and undertook

two international study tours to England, Netherlands,

Germany (Lower Saxony) and Austria to research and

investigate vocational education. He also has over 5 years

experience as a Financial Director in the Private Sector.
