CLEARING THAT INTERMITTENT*Repairing Those Intermittent Radio
Receivers Can Be SimplifiedBy Following the Proper Techniques
Described Herein.
Intermittents, it has been truly said, are the serviceman's
Nemesis. Inspite of the advances made in serv-icing techniques,
especially the intro-duction of cathode-ray tubes and "sig-nal
chasers," this type of trouble stillwastes more of his time than
all othersput together. Wartime lack of signal -tracing instruments
has aggravated theserviceman's difficulties. So has thescarcity of
tubes, which often bars theold technique of inserting a whole
newset while checking over a receiver.
An "intermittent" is that type of de-fect that causes a set,
otherwise nor-mal, to stop playing suddenly, or todrop greatly in
volume. Turning itoff and on again, jarring or tapping it,or
occasionally simply switching alight on or off in the room, is
oftensufficient to start it playing again. Here is the main problem
posed by theintermittent: When the serviceman at-tempts to localize
the trouble, the setsprings back to normal as soon as heplaces the
test prods across a sus-pected circuit. He cannot find thetrouble
in a set which has nothingwrong with it!
The cause of intermittent cut-off orvolume drop is almost
invariably apoor contact which becomes an abso-lute open because of
a sudden surge orchange in the amount of current flow-ing through
it. There are slight varia-tions; a tube -shield which makes
in-termittent contact with the chassismay send the receiver into
oscillationand thus cut off reception, but the un-derlying
principle is the same even inthis case. Such poor contacts may
ap-pear anywhere in the set, and in anycomponent. The trouble
-making spotmay be in the antenna -coil or voice -coil, or anywhere
between.
* By Y. Gabin in "Radio News."
Circuits carrying only r.f. currentsare the playgrounds of the
intermit-tent. Poor contacts in the path of di-rect currents often
show up throughcreating high resistance, burn out, ortend to weld
themselves (though cer-tain low -wattage resistors give rise
tobeautiful intermittents). They alsoare detected more readily by
test instruments in such circuits. In the r.f.leads, the very
minuteness of the cur-rents prevents any breakdown or self -healing
effects.
The r.f. bypass condenser is the mostcommon hideout of the
intermittent, though poorly soldered connectionsand poor friction
contacts run it aclose second. Such contacts often arefound in
variable condensers and tubeprongs. Intermittent opens or
poorcontacts in the r.f. transformer sec-ondaries and variations in
the highfrequency resistance of filter condens-ers, all have been
found guilty of "killing the signal." The rule is that nopart of
the set can be free from sus-picion, from power pack to cathode
re-sistor, and from antenna to loudspeaker.
Another intermittent-or semi-inter-mittent-is worth noting. This
showsup after the set has been playing forsome time and does not
respond to theusual switching or shaking, but disap-pears after the
set has been turned offfor a while. It is obviously caused byheat,
and is easier to find, as the setwill remain out of commission
whiletests are made on it in the "live" con-dition. It is mentioned
only to pointout that many true intermittents arealso "thermals,"
but such small onesthat they may cool immediately whenthe set goes
out of action, and be readyfor the slightest surge to put themback
to work again. Indeed, the ac -

tion is sometimes automatic, and theset goes on and off
periodically. Theauthor remembers one old '27 tubewhose filament
used to open after ithad been playing a few minutes. Afterthe first
cut-off, it would open andclose at regular 30 -second
intervals, with wierd effects on the program. The trouble, of course,
made itselfknown at once, and the tube was longkept in the shop as
a curiosity.
Servicemen have three standardmethods of attacking
intermittents. The oldest and crudest is to go throughthe set,
checking all suspicious partsby removing or replacing, and
playingthe receiver for long periods to makesure a cure is
effected. This is a time -wasting and unsure procedure, but hasa
few very good features. In certainmodels, bypass condensers are
notori-

tracers usually are not oversensitive, but are rigged up very
easily from anytype of old receiver, and require notuning. The prod
is simply applied tor.f. leads of any frequency, the signalbeing
rectified and amplified in thetracer. A second prod is required
foraudio signals.
Used to detect intermittents, thesignal tracer is hooked up
across thatpart of the receiver under test. If atracer with an eye
-tube is available, lead 4 may be hooked in at point G ofFig. 1. The
eye will remain closed andsignals will come from speakers ofboth
the set under test and the signaltracer. A failure of the signal
appear-ing in the output of the set under test, accompanied by an
opening of the eye, indicates trouble before the detector.Cessation
of sound from the speakerwith the eye remaining closed showsthat
the intermittent is in the a.f. cir-cuits. Should this be the case,
the hotprod is attached to the grid of the out-put tube (point I),
and the set playedtill it again fails. Should the speakerof the
tracer continue to play, thetrouble is obviously in the output
cir-cuits of the receiver, and points J andK should be tried next.
If both speak-ers stop, the signal -tracer lead may bemoved back to
the grid circuit of thepreceding tube, point G, and the proc-ess
repeated.
The same method is used in the i.f.and r.f. circuits, should the
trouble belocated before the detector. Usingleads 3, 2, or 1, the
faulty stage is lo-cated. Once the trouble is localizedwithin the
narrowest possible limits, the quick cure is to replace all
con-densers and resistors which mightcause the trouble, sweat all
joints andbrighten all contacts.
Even when using signal tracing, much time may be wasted and
equip-ment tied up in some obstinate cases.Sets have been known to
play eighthours per day for two or three dayswithout giving any
evidence of fading, and to continue for a day or two inthe owner's
home before starting tofade again. In some cases this is dueto
different conditions in the home andshop. For this reason it is
always well
to check on the voltage at the homelocation, and to ask if the
fading oc-curs more often at a given time of day
often a valuable clue to voltage con-ditions. If a set refuses
to "intermit"it is often a good idea to put a boxover it and let it
get a few degreeswarmer than the surrounding air. Per-haps taking
it out of the cabinet willimprove conditions..
The third method of attacking in-termittents-little used in the
past-is to increase the line voltage to apoint where faulty
components arelikely to break down under d.c. over -
Fig. 2. Many intermittents may be locatedeasily by operating the
receiver at a linevoltage higher than specified. A higherline
voltage can be obtained by connect-ing two transformers, as
shown.
loads or heavier r.f. surges. One ofthe weaknesses of this
system is thatit is quite useless against such defectsas a poor
antenna -coil connection, andlittle better for pure r.f. circuits
inother parts of the set. Where r.f. issuperimposed on d.c., it may
work well.
The serious fault of this method isthat it makes a complete
breakdownout of an intermittent. In many casesthere have been
disagreements be-tween servicemen and owners over es-timates, the
owner preferring to takehis set back rather than have it re-paired.
Naturally, he insisted on get-ting it in the same condition as it
waswhen he let it go to the shop. One badexperience with this
technically excel-lent, but commercially embarrassingservicing
method was too much for theserviceman.

Now that the market is more in hisfavor, he can be a little
bolder and ex-plain the situation to his customer. In most cases, if
he stresses the sav-ing of time and money the method in-volves he
will get a go-ahead signal.Neither is there now any necessity
forthe check -and -estimate method in thecase of intermittents. The
servicemancan make an estimate sufficient tocover the case before
running anytests.
The apparatus used in the over -volt-age test is simple. An old
toy trans-former, with taps up to 15 volts, is suf-ficient; circuit
is shown in Fig. 2.Often a variable -primary transformermay be
found in an old receiver. The117 -volt line may then be
connectedacross the 100 -volt tap and the setcross the 120 -volt
tan, giving a 20%
increase in voltage. Just to make thetest more gruesome, a sign
flasher maybe inserted in series with the primary.A fuse just big
enough to carry thecurrent used by the set should in allcases be
used. There is no reason whybreakdown of a bypass condensershould
be followed by burn -out of afilter choke or rectifier tube.
To repair an intermittent receiverin the shortest possible time,
a judi-
cious combination of all three meth-ods is advisable. First, put
in a set ofnew tubes, if possible. Then turn thechassis over and
sweat any suspiciousjoints-or all joints carrying r.f. only.If the
set is one in which fading isoften traced to certain bypass
con-densers, these also should be replaced. Many servicemen replace
the a.v.ccondensers in practically all old setsat this point, just
as a matter of prin-ciple. This is often worth doing, forvery often
"fading" is a fade in reverse-a leaky a.v.c. condenser takes
thebias off the controlled tubes, and thevolume is turned down
accordingly. Assoon as the intermittent condenserfunctions
properly, the a.v.c. goes onwith a bang, and the volume drops, often
below the audibility level.
The receiver may then be played onthe bench, while the
serviceman goesabout his regular work. If it stillfades, it may he
given an hour's runat a voltage of 130 or higher. Then ifnothing
happens, the signal tracershould be called into play. The
propercombination of all available methodswill conquer the
intermittent with noserious loss of that now more -than -ever
valuable commodity, time.
