The film ‘Kaithi’ had melodious music and two songs becamepopular. One wassung by Balachandar himself with a chorus.A melancholy-tinged songabout the pains and pangs of prisonlife, ‘ Haiyya ooooo Hariram ……..Hariram ... . . . . . .’, it wasadapted from a famous Negro spiritualrendered by the notedAmerican Black singer, actor and cult figure,Paul Robeson.Another song was rendered by (Radha) Jayalakshmi, theopening lines of which were in English, ‘ Be happy, becheerful, be jolly!”. It is sung by the heroine to her father. Sheasks him tobe happy. And in the song she offers him manythings - several English words and also some popular brandnames of the period areliberally used. These include ‘facepowder’, ‘snow’, ‘safety razor’, ‘shaving stick’, ‘toilet set’, ‘Tomcooil’, ‘American bush coat’, ‘Arrowshirt’, Crepe-sole boots ... ..‘Tootal ties’, ‘Turkeytowels’, ‘Tweed suit… all for you.. take it!’

S. Balachander had two young men working as his assistantdirectors. Theywould soon make a mark and scale the top of theladder as successfulfilmmakers and leaders of South IndianCinema. They were (‘Muktha’) V.Srinivasan, and the cel-ebrated multi-lingual filmmaker. K.S. Sethumadhavan. N.Sitaraman, later to be known as ‘Javert’ Sitaramanworkedwith him, contributing to the dialogues.

Among the otherartistes were S. A.Natarajan (of ‘ManthiriKumari’ fame), Revathiand Meenakshi. Revathi, attractiveand curvaceous, later made a markin Kannada Cinema andmarried the popular South Indian moviestar,Kalyankumar.(Her son Bharath Kalyan is now a popularTamil television actor.).

Meenakshi retired soon after and settled down to a happymarriedlife.

Initially the film was called ‘Rattham’ (Blood). After thefilmwas completed, the producers had designs and layouts forthe publicityof the film made, and they were shocked when theyread the top line, ‘’RELEASING SOON! JUPITER’S“RATTHAM!” (“JUPITERIN RATTHAM VIRAIVILVELIVARUGIRATHU!”) in Tamil! At once the title waschanged to ‘Kaithi’ and new layouts were prepared hurriedly. The film created a good impact and had a successful run.

1951 witnessed S. Balachandar appearing in another hitmovie, arare genre in Tamil Cinema, the crime thriller.

‘Rajambal’ was based on a popular novel in circulation forseveralyears, written by the noted Tamil reformist crime-writerJ. R.Rangaraju, a senior provincial Madras Governmentofficial living inSaidapet (then outside the city limits andheadquarters of theChinglepet (now Chengalpattu) DistrictCollectorate. Only the DistrictCourt functioned at Chinglepet!).

He was one of other three popularcrime-writers of the earlydecades of the 20th century, the other twobeing Vaduvoor K.Duraiswami Ayyangar and Arani Kuppuswami Mudaliar.Theonly female crime-writer of that day, Vai. Mu. KothainayakiAmmalwas also popular.

The novel had been filmed earlier in 1935 by the sadlyforgotten southIndian pioneer filmmaker A. Narayanan, inwhich the music composer andpopular hero of his day, P. S.Srinivasa Rao, played the lead role too.

One of the assistants in the crew was an enterprising youngmandestined to make a mark in South Indian Cinema ascinematographer, filmmaker, studio-owner and all, R. M.Krishnaswami. Popularlyknown as ‘RMK’, the no- nonsensetough guy worked as cinematographer in several movies in-cluding a long stint at Modern Theaters for theSalem-basedmovie mogul T. R. Sundaram. When the 1950s dawned, RMKwent onhis own and, in association with other technicians, heformed his owncompany, Aruna Films and ‘Rajambal’ was hismaiden venture which hedirected himself, besides handling thecamera.

This movie had Balachander as the villain, a lecherousmagistrate whoexploits the law to serve his sexual needs andseduce the heroine! Thehero was new and from Tamil Theater.Handsome and possessing an excellentphysique, R.Lakshminarasimhan took his bow as in the lead role underthescreenname, R. S. Manohar! Soon he became a star and forgedaheadto create a slot for himself as a character actor and villainbesides blazing new trails in Tamil theater, bringing into lightthe variouslesser known episodes in Hindu mythology.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORSir, We

Sir, I thank you forpublishing my letterwith photograph lastweek in MambalamTimes about the prob-lem of overflowingsewage in SivasailamStreet, T. Nagar.

The Metrowater of-ficials immediatelyvisited the street andassured the residentsthat the problemwould be solved byDec. 31.

However they havenot properly ad-dressed the issue. Inspite of some work car-ried out by them, there

Metrowater close complaint without solvingsewage problem

the members discussed in detail Chennai Corporation’s proposedextension of the South Usman Road flyover and the construction ofa new one on North Usman Road at an estimated cost of Rs. 260 toRs.350 crores.

The existing South Usman Road flyover which begins barely 50meters from T. Nagar bus terminus and ends in front of GRTThangamaligai is more of a hurdle than a palliative to ease the trafficcongestion.

The flyover only helps commuters to skip Panagal Park junction,it does not even skip the ever busy Ranganathan Street junction.

The service lanes are very narrow as the flyover was constructedwithout acquiring additional land on either side of the road and aretherefore always congested.

The already narrow service lanes are further misused for parkingvehicles and encroached upon by hawkers and little action is takenby the police or Corporation to eliminate the same.

The participating residents were of the unanimous view that theflyover, which was built ostensibly to ease congestion, has onlycreated traffic chaos and a host of other problems for the residents, effectively choking the way for free movement of pedestrians andvehicles. Further various court orders obtained by the residents havenot been implemented by the police or the Corporation on theremoval of hawkers and for better utilization of space beneath theflyover.

The present proposal of the Corporation to extend Usman Roadflyover and construct a new one on both sides will only compound thewoes.

As a measure to decongest, the Association requests the Corporationto construct Y-shape pedestrian subways on Usman Road atPothy’s junction, near T. Nagar bus terminus and at RanganathanStreet junction. – T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, 30Rangan Street, T. Nagar

is still a heavy over-flow of sewage.

The assistant engi-neer sent me an SMSstating that the prob-lem has been solvedand has hence closedthe online complaintfiled by me.

I have again raisedthe issue with them, but have not receivedany response so far. –R. Chandrasekran,Sivasailam Street,T. Nagar
