Southern Railway launches3-phase suburban service

launched its high-capacitythree-phase EMUs on Beach–Tambaram–Chenga lpetsection. There are six servicesbetween Chennai Beach andChengalpet and three servicesbetween Chennai Beach andTambaram.

The first service starts at8.10 a.m. The train acco-mmadates 20% more com-muters.

It has 1,168 seats andprovision for 4,852 standingpassengers whereas in aconventional rake the seatingcapacity is 1,256 and thestanding capacity is 3,768. Inaddition, there will be provisionof CCTV surveillance camerasin ladies compartment tostrengthen security for womenpassengers.

mote and restore the green-ery in the city after thedevastation caused byVardah cyclone, SouthernRailways planted saplingsalong tracks near subur-ban stations in the city in-cluding Mambalam Sta-tion.

Tenders floated for T. Nagarpedestrian plaza

15 months after the trial run for the T. Nagar pedestrianplaza was held by Chennai Corporation, the civic body hasfloated tenders for the project.

The corporation has split the Rs 25-crore smart city proposalto be executed on the 1.4 km. of Theyagaraya Road into threereaches for ease of execution. The first reach between PanagalPark and Dr Nair Road junction has been further subdividedinto two packages – north and south, each costing Rs 6.37crores and Rs 6.39 crores respectively.

The second reach between Dr Nair Road and South BoagRoad junctions will cost the Corporation Rs 7.23 crores, whilethe final reach of the pedestrian plaza between South BoagRoad junction and Anna Salai will cost Rs 4.92 crores.

The last date for submission of tenders is March 15 with apre-bid meeting scheduled for March 2.

After the two pedestrian plaza trials, the project gotinadvertently delayed due to several issues including thecondition of the sewer line. Both Metrowater and the TamilNadu Water Investment Company conducted an inspectionof the stretch and deemed that the sewer lines were in a fairlygood condition.

If the sewer lines had had to be be replaced, it would havetaken two more years for the project to take off, said a resident.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORConductor refuses to accept free MTC coupon

Sir, I am a senior citizen and a long-time resident of Thambiah Street,West Mambalam.

I regularly avail of the free tokens for senior citizens offered by MTC.On Feb. 22, I boarded an MTC bus on route 11 at Broadway to reach

T. Nagar. When I presented the MTC coupon, the conductor refused toaccept it and demanded that I buy a regular ticket. When I protested,he asked the driver to stop the bus and forced me to get down. I wasshocked that none of the other commuters came to my support inexercising my right to use the free coupon, but instead turned a blindeye when the conductor behaved rudely and forced me to get down. Hiscontention was that MTC was running at a loss and cannot afford toissue free coupons. I however decided not to lodge a complaint againstthe conductor as it could have ruined his career.

Apartment complex wall near station misused as urinalSir, Our apartment complex shares its rear compound wall with a

building belonging to the Railways that runs parallel to MambalamRailway Station, near SBI ATM.

The barricade separating the building and the railway station wasremoved 3 months back enabling anyone to come near the rearcompound wall of our complex.

The location has been converted into an open urinal and at night aplace for groups of nefarious elements to gather and drink liquor. Thefoul smell is affecting the residents and the unsanitary condition hasbecome a health hazard for the residents. Empty liquor bottles andplastic cups are a common sight.

It is also a security hazard as any burglar can now scale thecompound wall to gain access to our building.

Open pit at junction poses dangerSir, There is an open pit at the junction of 42nd Street and 6th

Get LPG weighed and leakage checked at timeof delivery

Sir, Indian Oil Corporation and other companies have issued severalsafety measures to its distributors and consumers with respect tohandling and use of LPG cylinders.

One of the important safety measures at the time of delivery of therefill is to check the weight of the cylinder and the valve or O-ring forleakage. But the boys who come to deliver the cylinder do not carry aweighing device. They also do nor check the valve for leakage. They areusually in a hurry to meet their delivery schedule for the day. Lack ofawareness on the part of the consumers is also a cause for this lapse.

I appeal to readers of Mambalam Times to always get the cylinderweighed (should be around 14kg. excluding the weight of empty cylinder)and leakage checked at the time of delivery.

Roads in poor straitsSir, In spite of the efforts taken by Chennai Corporation, many roads

in the neighbourhood and in most parts of the city are plagued bydumping of garbage, overflowing bins, water stagnation, open man-holes, bad condition and other such problems.

Unless the public develop proper civic sense, the vision of a ‘Clean andGreen Chennai’ will continue to be a distant dream. Chennai Corpora-tion, in association with NGOs, NCC and other such organisations,should conduct more awareness programs to educate the public onwaste segregation and disposal, and other such civic issues.

Similarly, they should conduct awareness programs in schools toinculcate the importance of community hygiene among students froma young age.

65-year-old Palani has been selling cottoncandy from a cart for a living in theneighbourhood for the past 40 years.

He was recently spotted by this reporter onBRP Street, West Mambalam.

He told him that sales have dwindled over theyears and he is leading a hand-to-mouthexistence.

He said that there are lots of new items in themarket that children get attracted to andcotton candy is not very popular nowadays. Hestill has regular customers, some of them 2nd

generation, who have grown to be adults, headded.

“My cart suffered damage in a minor accidentwith an MTC bus recently, and I don’t havemoney to repair it as my daily earnings go forhousehold expenses,” he said.

He stays alone in Chennai and his wife livesin Karaikudi (his native town).

Man held for misbehaving withwomen pedestrians

S. Jayaprakash (45) (a resident of Nagathaman Koil Street, WestMambalam) was arrested on Feb. 22 for allegedly misbehaving withseveral women pedestrians in and around Kotturpuram.

Jayaprakash targeted woman walking alone on the lonely stretches ofthe road at night, and misbehaved with them. The complainants includeda doctor and a college student. According to the police, Jayaprakash ridinga bike, would approach women on the road under the pretext of asking foran address and misbehave with them before escaping.

He used to wear a helmet to protect his identity and also cover the bike’snumber plate with a white sticker. After receiving several complaints, thepolice increased patrolling of the streets and on the night of Feb. 22, caughtJayaprakash redhanded when he targeted a woman. He told the police thathe had been doing this for more than 6 months while returning from hisoffice in Meenambakkam. He was remanded to judicial custody.
