“MY LORD, MELUD, ME LUD’’ JUSTICE Chandru’s flight through the High Court
corridors without a bodyguard wearing a stupid red turbancarrying a stupid silver mace would have disappointed thelitigants and the lawyer-tribe in the last 7 years when hemarched to the court in lonely splendour before taking theseat of Vikramaditya.
His unmatched disposal mount of nearly 80,000 casesduring his tenure may be attributed to the saving of severalhundred hours of hearing time by the voluntary eschewingof the cataract of invoking the Supreme Justice’s emis-sary by the learned gentry with “My Lord, Melud, Me Lud”which he frowned upon, and was not guilty of while he hadorated from the bar.
Had not a snake-in-the-grass got me out of my post ofGovernment Pleader by stealing Amma’s signature on thedeath warrant, I would have been upped by Chief JusticeSwamy to set a precedent for Chandru to follow.
Chandru was totally fearless, non partisan and the mostjudicially honest Judge without isms and whims. He did notneed precedents because he is inherently honest. The coffleof “My Lord, Me Lud” chanters could not pollute his courtthrough the piffle of such chants as he insisted on a mere“Sir” for his address. This ban must have made many agreat forensic orator speechless for half their time isnormally spent on the eternal invocation. That must havecontributed to the time saved for the creation of fast justiceand the resultant record.
If Supreme court judges can sit up to the age of 65, do theHigh Court judges attain their dotage at 62? Look at thecrew that govern us in the law-making bodies! Most ofthem are crawlies towards dotage. I think that good oldfriend and now Finance Minister Chidambaram, as alawyer of eminence and the best speaker in Parliament, should amend the law regarding the retirement of the HighCourt judges raising it to 70, to ensure which the recruit-ment should be of the best.
