Was Shakespeare anti-Semitic?

how anti-Semitism is expressed through the character Shylock in ŅThe Merchant of VeniceÓ

Shylock is the villain in the play & heÕs Jewish. His heart does not listen to AntonioÕs plea for mercy as expressed to his friends.

ShylockÕs daughter, Jessica, elopes with a Christian & gives up her faith, thus displaying Ņthe perfect love.Ó Portrayed as correct thing to do.

When Shylock quotes the Scriptures, Antonio derides him and calls him a Ņdevil.Ó (cf. ŅThe devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.Ó)

Shylock is despised by all because he is a usurer (moneylender). His counterpart, Antonio, gives his money away freely as a token of his friendship.

Lancelot, ShylockÕs servant, also flees from ShylockÕs house because it is where a Jew lives.

Anti-Semitism is not just something that happened in World War II in Germany. It has surfaced many times in history. Shakespeare wrote the play as a reaction to the outburst which broke out in London in 1594.

St. Patrick’s DayIs about…

a holiday

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated all over the world

Some cities have parades

Some people wear green (you will get pinched if you don’t)

Shamrocks are symbols of St. Patrick’s Day The Irish believe that shamrocks bring good luck (like our 4-leaf clovers)

Legends: St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. Leprechauns are small people who collect pots of gold. If you catch one he will lead you to his pot of gold (at the end of the rainbow)

So what? What is important to understand about this?

It is interesting to learn about holidays and fun to celebrate them.
