HISTORY & Genealogy

History of Middletown Continues A Vanished Port: Middletown & the CaribbeanDeborah Shapiro, the Director of the Middlesex County Historical Society, will give an illustrated presentation about the Society’s newest exhibit, “A Vanished Port: Middletown & the Caribbean, 1750-1824.” In its heyday, Middletown was the 4th largest port in New England trading Connecticut agricultural products with the sugar islands of the West Indies in return for sugar, molasses, rum, and slaves. In addition to the luxurious life of merchants as evidenced by the collections of the Historical Society, the exhibit depicts the suffering of enslaved workers in the sugar monoculture of the English Caribbean, which underlay Middletown’s prosperity.

The Even Start Program of Middletown Adult Education is an NAEYC Accredited program. It recognizes that a parent is the child’s first and most important teacher. We support this by bringing parents in need of adult education and their children (ages 6 weeks - 3 years) together into a dual-generational learning program. Parents and their children can share the excitement and joy of learning together! Even Start provides early childhood education and adult academic instruction. It strengthens the parent-child relationship and enhances parenting skills through a Parenting class and daily parent and child activities.
