Hearing Session: President Pérez extended an invitation to the audience to present matters to the Board on items not on the Agenda. The following individuals came forward:
Drew Hansen addressed the Board regarding his spouse Emily’s request for salary reclassification. Mr. Hansen distributed a timeline of events to the Board.
Boyd Jensen addressed the Board regarding his daughter Emily’s request for salary reclassification. Mr. Jensen stated that we are in the business of encouraging teachers to advance their education and Emily is a product of Alvord. Mr. Jensen expressed concern about addressing this issue in a public hearing and requested a return call from the appropriate staff.
Dennis Findly, 11524 Los Molinos, came forward to thank the Board for their assistance in resolving the placement of his daughter two years ago and to report on the wonderful progress she has made at Valley View Elementary School. Mr. Findly complimented Pete Gennaro, Coordinator of Special Education Services, for his assistance and dedication to students.
Jerry Leslie, Vice President of AEA, thanked Kathy Wright for facilitating the 8th Grade Promotion Activities Committee meetings and Pam Benson for taking minutes. Mr. Leslie reviewed some of the recommendations made by the committee and stated that he would have to suggest that the promotion ceremony be discontinued. Mr. Leslie also suggested that the academic standard align with current education requirements.
Mike Gasca, community member, stated that he was informed that he is banned from the La Sierra High School campus and requested assistance from the Board. Mr. Gasca stated that many of the consultant services listed on the agenda tonight for approval are available through the Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) at no cost. Mr. Gasca expressed concern regarding The Princeton Review.
Penny Mayer, Alvord Educational Foundation, announced that entertainment books are now available through the foundation with proceeds benefiting Alvord high school seniors. Anyone interested can contact Mrs. Mayer at 785-0974, or Linde in the Superintendent’s Office at 509-5070. Action Items: The following Consent Agenda items were presented for approval: 5.a. Discussion/Action Items: 8. CONDUCT PUBLIC HEARING – Convey Easement – Loma Vista Middle School: No one came forward. 9. AS AMENDED – Approve Agreement and License – City of Riverside and Steven Walker Homes – Loma Vista Middle School Easement: Mr. McKelroy and Mr. Kraft expressed concern with work being performed while school is in session. Following discussion the Board approved the agreement as amended and license for the City of Riverside and Steven Walker Homes for the Loma Vista Middle School easement upon a motion made by Zack Earp and seconded by Ben Johnson.

PULLED – Riverside County School Boards Association Update: Board member Zack Earp requested that this item be placed on the September 2, 2004, agenda for discussion. 11. Review and Discuss Correspondence Related to Student Expulsions: Following discussion, it was the consensus of the Board that this item be tabled for further discussion when the new Director of Student Services is in place. 12. Review and Discuss District Dress Code Policy and Administrative Regulations: Staff reviewed discussions with school administration, parent representatives and legal counsel. Following discussion, the Board requested that the revised Board Policy and Administrative Regulations be brought to the September 2, 2004, Board meeting reflecting the suggested changes. 13. Review and Discuss District-wide Policy for Uniforms at Elementary Schools: Board member Ben Johnson requested that this item be placed on the agenda for discussion. Mr. Johnson would like to see a District-wide uniform policy. Mr. Kraft would support a uniform policy if it is voluntary. Mr. McKelroy would not support a policy without a formal District-wide survey. If a survey is done, Mr. Pérez would like to know how many parents participated. José Luis Pérez – Mr. Pérez read a newspaper article announcing that Mike McKelroy will be honored as the All American 23rd District VFW Commander in Cincinnati, Ohio on Monday, August 16, 2004. Mr. Pérez congratulated Mr. McKelroy. Paul Jessup – Mr. Jessup congratulated Mr. McKelroy on his upcoming honor. The meeting adjourned to Closed Session at 9:20 p.m. with action expected following Closed Session.
