President’s Message
This is my last “President’s Message” for Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu–El. I am say-ing goodbye and thank you as your presi-dent. It has been two years since I took !"#$%&'()&'&*!+&,'-&,'..%(%)&/(&!01&$!(-gregational life. I asked all to “Share our Journey,” and I am proud to say that you did so. Many changes have been imple-
mented in order to navigate and allow us to feel in home at our new location, and we have all adapted quite well. All of us that volunteered and served during this time stepped up to the plate and led by example. Our board is comprised of many different people who bring varied skill sets and personality traits to the table. More times than not, we would disagree on many items, but in the end, we all had one goal and only one mission in mind. It was really great to see our synagogue grow in many ways. We saw increased membership, attendance at services and %2%(+-3&'()&#('($/'*&4/2/(4&5,/*%&6%$!7/(4&'&7!1%&%4'*/+'1-ian shul. All the growth we are having, means that members should feel an obligation to help whenever asked. This is your synagogue and we should all be very proud to pitch in when help is needed to continue on the wonderful journey we all started. On behalf of the entire congregation I wish to say thank you. We all appreciate the dedication pf those who have participated in helping to improve our shul.& 8&5'(+&+!&+,'(9&+,%&$011%(+&!"#$%1-&'()&6!'1)&7%76%1-&for their time and efforts during this last two years. No one more so than the president understands the time you have voluntarily donated to make Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El a better kehillah.
As my administration winds down, I am reminded of all that has gone on during the past two years, including new member open houses, High Holy days and Yom Tovim servic-es, Shabbat services every Friday night and Saturday morn-ing, Simchat Torah and our upcoming joint Pesach services with Beth Sholom, Adult Education programs led by Rabbi Addison, Cantor Gordon, Ba’al Koreh David Reif and Vice President Michael Eisman, our Scholar–in–Residence pro-gram with Vice President Jonathan Tobin and J. J. Goldberg, Purim and Selichot, b’nai mitzvot, lunch and learns, Shabbat dinners, weddings, various Sisterhood and Men’s Club events, ongoing community events such as the Food Pantry, OYCO kehillah, attendance at shiva houses and visiting the sick, mah jong and the upcoming gala honoring our retiring Rabbi Addi-son. Our attendance and participation at these events has been -/4(/#$'(+*:&*'14%1&+,'(&/(&.'-+&:%'1-;&<%&,'2%&1%(%5%)&#('(-cial stability due to the efforts of Vice President Ron Goldman and the strategic planning committee.

We all will share our journey I want to say thank you for allowing me to be your presi-dent. I am very proud of our synagogue and where it is head-ing. Now is the time to endorse and support our slate for next year and help our new co-presidents Mitchell Pinsly and Larry Shipper as they start their term. As summer is approaching, I hope everybody will have a good time vacationing while remaining safe. Please remember to continue to check out the weekly eNews letters and Shofar for upcoming information on events that are taking place at Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu–El so that you will be able to and “share our journey.” Shalom,

Sisterhood President’s Message
I want to thank my committee of Faye Gilad, Judy Baker, and Libby Goldman for all their hard work and time in mak-ing the Sisterhood Brunch and Games on January 11th such a huge success. Many thanks to Lori Goldfarb for her help in the kitchen, and a very special thanks to Natalie Gabai for bringing many of her friends to enjoy the festivities. All ladies had a wonderful time.

Israel Guide Dog Center For The BlindAt a recent Sisterhood board meeting, members voted to con-tribute to several worthwhile charities in the United States and Israel. One of the charities chosen was Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind.
Prior to the establishment of the Center in 1991, the only way for blind Israelis to receive a guide dog was to travel !"#$!%&'()*+',-#!.*/-'01.)2'/)'3)4*/-5'!)%'!"*.'2$'*.!6.'7$#'extended training periods could take advantage of this op-portunity. Today instruction is provided in Hebrew for both dogs and applicants at the Center in Beit Oved, near Tel Aviv. They learn about physical barriers such as sidewalks blocked by posts, streetlights, trash cans and parked cars as wells as concrete security barriers at street corners, etc. The puppies are weaned and given to foster families at two months of age. They remain with their families until !4.'89'4!/)/)4'.:;$-1#.'2$'2#!7<=9'-/22/)4'>1/.2'7$#';.#/$%-'$7'time, meeting new people, going to work, shopping at malls or supermarkets, visiting friends or restaurants and traveling on buses and trains to prepare them for lives as guide dogs. During this period the families are supervised by visits from Center staff. At the end of one year, the dogs are tested for their suitability as guide dogs. Those found suitable return 2$' 25.'?.)2.#'7$#'<6.'@$)25-'$7' /)2.)-/6.'2#!/)/)4&'()*+'A'out of 10 dogs qualify. The others are offered to the fos-ter families that raised them or to vision-impaired children. Each guide dog is matched with a blind Israeli who has also gone through a screening process Together they attend a four week training class, three at the center and one at home. To date over 300 blind Israelis have been matched with a guide dog, including wounded soldiers, those who have been blind from birth and those who have had accidents, diseases or other life changing events causing them to be visually im-paired. A partnership lasts from 8–9 years when the guide dogs are usually retired and replaced by a younger dog. The re-tired dogs are offered to their owners, then to their original foster families and then to other families. Those dogs with health problems are often adopted by Center volunteers. The guide dogs and services are provided free of charge. The total cost of a guide dog partnership from birth until it retires is about $25,000. It is the duty of the leadership of a group to get more people engaged in the group’s activities so as to insure the future of that or-ganization. So here we have two buzz words “engaged” and “com-munity.” MBIEE paid a sum of money for a consultant to tell us #D(@5!5)&C&!<O>(45#'5!#C>&=5C!*#O('L!(5)&4C3I!! I thank you very much for writing a check each year for Men’s Club member-ship. If that is what you wish to do, please do not misunderstand the thrust of this article. Beginning on Pesach and continuing throughout that festival and the following Shabbatot, we will explore, during services, the unique spiritual tasks that call us each week and subsequent days of the Omer. During our tikun study on Shavuot eve, we’ll look back over this process to assess how it is that we might continue to make each of our days count.
Two third–century sages from the land of Israel, Rabbi Yochanan and Resh Lakish, warned against disregarding the counting of the Omer. They contended that both Abraham’s claim to Eretz Yisrael and the continuing tranquility of our homes are contingent upon this mitzvah. While they might have been engaging in rabbinic hyperbole, the Omer does provide a special occasion for yearly self-exploration and spiritual growth. After all, if we are given seven days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to reconcile with God and others, imagine the depths of transformation that can occur when we are gifted with seven times the opportunity as we move from the liberation of Pesach to the exaltation of Shavuot.
