Maine Hosts Albany for Senior WeekendThe Black Bears have played all but one game in the month of May away from Mahaney Diamond, and conclude the regular season with a three-game home series against the Albany Great Danes. The Black Bears are coming off a weekend conference sweep of UMass Lowell, and a tough loss to Boston Col-lege on Tuesday night, while Albany comes in after taking two-of-three games against Hartford and then defeating Sacred Heart in a high-scoring 14-13 game.
Last Time OutThe Black Bears took a 8-3 lead over BC into the eighth inning, but hot bats from the Eagles produced a six-run bottom of the eighth, and they were able to shut down a lead-off double situation from the Black Bears in the top of the ninth to edge out a victory. Jeremy Pena went 3-5 including three RBIs and a run; Chris Bec also went 3-5 in the contest. Chris Murphy and John Arel held the Eagles to no hits until the eighth inning before BC tallied five runs in the eighth with six earned runs.
A Look at MaineThe Black Bears are led by Junior Catcher Chris Bec, who has a team-high .359 batting average and 60 hits. He now leads the conference in batting average, and has a conference-high 17 doubles on the year. Sophomore shortstop Jeremy Pena has been swinging the bat well as of late, he’s second on the team in RBIs with 30, and batting average with .304. Senior right-fielder Tyler Schwanz has hit a team-high six home runs this season, he is batting .272 on the season. He now holds the team-high for RBI’s with 32. Pena and Scwhanz rank third and fourth in the conference in triples hit this season, Pena has four triples, Schwanz has three.
Scouting the Great DanesAlbany comes into this series with a 22-23 record, 8-12 in America East play. They are led by Kevin Do-nati and Connor Powers who each tote a team-high .329 batting average. Donati leads the team in hits with 56, with 12 doubles, three triples and four home runs, and Powers has tallied 52 hits, 15 doubles, two triples and three home runs. Travis Collins leads the team in home runs and RBIs as he has hit 10 homeruns on the season and has brought home 34 RBIs.
America East Pitcher of the Week: Connor JohnsonRelief pitcher Connor Johnson has been awarded the America East Pitcher of the Week Award for the week of May 9th through May 15th, after his brief appearance in game one against UMass Lowell this past weekend.
In the top of the sixth inning, UMass Lowell rallied back from a 3-1 deficit with a four run inning to take the lead, 5-3. With no outs in the inning, Johnson came in to put out the fire, and forced a double play and a foul-out to keep the score 5-3.
He then went on to retire the side with a one, two, three inning in the seventh on 16 pitches, and the same in the eighth on 16 pitches, including two strikeouts. His performance allowed Maine to rally in the bottom of the seventh as they scored three runs to lead 7-5, setting up Jeff Gelinas with his conference-leading sixth save of the season in the top of the ninth. The win gave Johnson a 3-3 record on the season.

DERBA Info4 COLLEGEManhattan College ‘074CAREER NOTEBOOK3 First Season as an NCAA Head Coach
4COACHING EXPERIENCE2013_ Hitting/Catching Coach, Chatham Anglers2014-2015_ Assistant Coach, University of Maine2015-2016_ Associate Head Coach, Univer-sity of Maine2017_ Interim Head Coach, University of Maine
On Dec. 17, 2016, Nick Derba was named Interim Head Coach at the University of Maine.
Derba was promoted to associ-ate head coach in the summer of 2015.
He will serve his first year at the helm and his fourth season overall during the spring of 2017. He brings extensive experience to Maine as both a player and coach. Derba will work primarily with Maine’s hitters and catch-
ers, along with coordinating the Black Bears recruiting efforts.
After a highly decorated play-ing career at Manhattan Col-lege, Derba was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 30th round of the 2007 Major League Draft. Known in the professional ranks as an outstanding receiver and thrower, Derba’s career in the Cardinal system spanned six seasons. Derba advanced as high as AAA Memphis (PCL), he was also a member of the 2012 Texas League champion Spring-field Cardinals. From 2008-2012 Derba spent significant time in the Cardinals Major League spring training camp. Derba re-tired following the 2012 season to pursue a career in coaching.
Derba’s arrival in Maine was a reunion of sorts, as he played for former Maine head coach Steve Trimper during his first two years at Manhattan College.
“Having coached Nick at Man-hattan College and watching his professional career, he has a tre-mendous work ethic, character and the ability to be a top-notch teacher,” said former Maine head coach Steve Trimper. “He brings a wealth of knowledge from the college and professional side of baseball.”
HEAD COACH NICK DERBA - First season at MainePrior to his arrival at Maine, Derba served as the hitting and catching coach for the Chatham Anglers for the Cape Cod Base-ball League during the summer of 2013, the same team that he played for from 2004-06. He was a volunteer during the 2012 sea-son at Manhattan College, after working with the Jasper catch-ers during the 2011 and 2010 off-seasons.
During his career at Manhattan College, Derba was a three-time All-MAAC first team catcher. He was the only three year captain in Manhattan baseball history. Derba is among the school’s all-time leaders in career home runs, hits, runs scored, games played and RBI.
A 2007 graduate of Manhattan College, Derba graduated with a degree in biology with a concen-tration in pre-med. He obtained a double minor in psychology and chemistry. While with the Jaspers, he was a three-time All-MAAC academic team selection. He was a nominee for the Thom-as J. Gunn Medal in 2007 and received the John Daly award for community service.
He and his wife, Megan, reside in Bangor.
