NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORERS INCLUDING ALEXANDRA COUSTEAU FEATURED PRESENTERS AT WATER EDUCATION FESTIVAL FOR O.C. SCHOOLS Disneyland Resort is Presenting Sponsor of Two-Day Festival for Orange County 4th-6th Graders
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. – (Feb. 22, 2011) The Orange County Water District (OCWD)
Groundwater Guardian Team announced today that three internationally recognized experts on the
environment will be featured presenters at the 15th annual Children’s Water Education Festival,
March 23-24, 2011, at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in Yorba Linda.
National Geographic Emerging Explorer Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of Jacques-
Yves Cousteau and Founder and President of Blue Legacy International, will share her passion for
the environment and vision for managing our water resources sustainably in order to preserve a
healthy planet. National Geographic Emerging Explorer Kenny Broad, Ph.D., cave diver and
environmental anthropologist, will share the importance of a healthy ocean and groundwater
supply, and introduce the students to the element of exploration and discovery. Joel Sartore,
renowned photographer for National Geographic, will share his extraordinary wildlife
photography and experiences while capturing the indelible images that have graced National
Geographic. (NOTE: Bios for all three are attached)
The Festival, which is the largest of its kind in the nation, educates thousands of Orange
County’s fourth, fifth and sixth grade students and teachers each year about water and the
environment. As an example, Dr. Broad will take the students on a wild visual ride beneath their
feet into one of the world's most beautiful and dangerous realms of underwater caves.
“If we exclude fresh water that is locked up in the form of ice, about 95 percent of the
earth’s fresh water is contained in underground aquifers,” said Broad. “These aquifers often are
associated with unique underwater cave systems that not only hold our drinking water, but are
home to rare species of life, including microbes that can shed light on the earth’s evolution and
can provide clues for developing life-saving chemical compounds.”

WATER EDUCATION FESTIVAL WELCOMES INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS ADD 1-1-1
Dr. Broad added that groundwater extraction for industrial, agricultural and human
consumptive uses, pollution and salt water intrusion associated with sea level rise are all
threatening to wipe out an ecosystem that we know very little about. “One of the reasons we know
so little is because of the difficulty in exploring these hidden realms,” he said.
Presented by the Orange County Water District, Disneyland Resort, the National Water
Research Institute, the Municipal Water District of Orange County and the Orange County Water
District Groundwater Guardian Team, the mission of the Festival is to educate students and
teachers about water-related and conservation issues that correspond to California Science
Standards. The Festival teaches youth to think “blue” and make a difference in protecting our
water resources for today, tomorrow and for future generations.
“The event is more than an opportunity to educate students about protecting and preserving
our environment, groundwater and drinking water resources,” said Frank Dela Vara, Director,
Environmental Affairs and Conservation for the Disneyland Resort, a Festival sponsor for 14
years. “It is a chance to plant seeds of knowledge that will help empower our youth to make a
difference.”
The Children’s Water Education Festival is provided at no cost to schools, making public
and private financial support crucial to the success of this educational event and its continued
growth. While the event is free, many schools are unable to attend because of transportation costs.
An easy way for individuals and organizations in the community to support their neighborhood
school is to help underwrite transportation costs, which generally runs $300 to $500 per bus.
Contributions are tax deductible.
Conducting a Festival of this size requires more than 600 volunteers, staff and presenters,
as well as in-kind and monetary donations. To sponsor, contact Gina DePinto at (714) 378-3228 or
[email protected]. To volunteer, contact Amanda Gavin at (714) 378-3202 or
[email protected]. For information, go to www.ocwd.com or to www.childrenwaterfestival.com.

OCWD manages the world renowned Groundwater Replenishment System and the groundwater basin underneath north and central Orange County that currently provides 62% of the water needs for about 2.5 million residents. Established by the California State Legislature in 1933, OCWD is a special district governed by a 10‐member Board of Directors. For general information about OCWD, call (714) 378‐3200 or go to www.ocwd.com and www.gwrsystem.com.
In Kenny Broad’s line of work, exploring submerged caves and blue holes, one mistake
can equal death. He and his team must take every precaution to avoid such dangers as stirring
up sediments that can wipe out visibility, succumbing to nausea as they pass through a toxic
layer of hydrogen sulfide, or getting lost in maze‐like passageways with a limited supply of
diving gasses.
The need to study blue
holes is urgent, as they are
among the least studied and
most threatened habitats on
Earth. Over 90 percent of the
Earth’s unfrozen fresh water is in
underground aquifers. These
systems are a source of drinking water for locals, boast a unique
biodiversity of microbial and multicellular life that shed light on the evolution of life, and, due
to their unique water chemistry, perfectly preserve skeletal remains of long extinct species,
including humans. Cave formations such as stalagmites can be used to reconstruct climate as
the Earth passed in and out of the ice ages, allowing us to better judge the rates and possible
impacts of modern changes in climate.

These cave systems—with their reversing tides—can transition from giant rooms to
narrow holes that divers must remove all of their gear in order to squeeze through. “You can’t
send a remotely operated vehicle in to explore caves because the technology simply doesn’t
exist,” he says. “It’s one of the few environments left on the planet where you must physically
go to learn about it. It’s great for job security.”
An entertaining and witty presenter, Broad’s work combines the study of risk
perception, exploration, and environmental anthropology. His interdisciplinary training includes
an M.A. in marine affairs and policy from the University of Miami, and a Ph.D. in anthropology
from Columbia University. He is currently an associate professor in the Division of Marine
Affairs and Policy at the University of Miami and the Director of the Abess Center for Ecosystem
Science and Policy and holds a joint appointment at Columbia University Lamont‐Doherty Earth
Observatory. Broad has participated and led scientific and film expeditions around the world,
both above and under water. He was elected a Fellow National of the Explorers Club in 2009
and a National Geographic Emerging Explorer in 2006, and his most recent work was featured
as the cover story of the August 2010 issue of National Geographic. ###

JOEL SARTORE
Best known for his photographs of wildlife, particularly endangered species, Joel Sartore
wields his camera in the battle to conserve natural spaces and the habitats they support.
Of his 30‐plus stories for National Geographic magazine, several have made an indelible mark
on the places and animals the articles chronicle. Sartore’s March 2000 National Geographic
cover story—“Madidi: Will Bolivia Drown Its New National Park?”—helped convince the
Bolivian government to abandon its plans to
build a large‐scale hydroelectric dam that would
have submerged a large portion of pristine
forest. Sartore’s photograph of an oil‐covered
brown pelican appeared on the cover of the
October 2010 National Geographic cover story
– “The Spill.”
Closer to home he has covered such
hot button issues as Alaska’s North Slope,
where big oil, wild creatures, and native populations collide in the largest remaining U.S.
wilderness. A favorite among National Geographic presenters, Sartore’s entertaining
presentations blend humor with powerful conservation messages and award‐winning
photography of wildlife and the places they inhabit. ###
