By RANDOR GUY

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 11After the success of ‘Manthri Kumari’ G, .Ramanathan was

retained by T. R. Sundaram and Modern Theatresas almostwhat they call ‘Aasthaana Music Composer.’ During a singleyear of 1950 Ramanathan scored music for three movies forthe Modern Theatres movie empire. The first was ‘DigambaraSamiyar’.

During the early decades of the 20th century, detectivefiction was popular in Tamil. The writers who dominated thisgenre were J. R. Rangaraju, Arani Kuppuswami Mudaliar, Vai.Mu. Kothainayaki Ammal and Vaduvoor K. DuraiswamiIyengar, who was the most successful of them all. His detectivenovels, running into several volumes, were bestsellers in thosedays.

One of his successful novels was “Digambara Samiyar” (alsoknown as ‘Kumbakonam Vakil’). It is all about a crookedadvocate in Kumbakonam who is keen on getting Vadivambal(M.S. Draupathi) an heir married to his useless brother (T. K.Ramachandran). The lawyer is a master at cutting corners, and a person in saintly robes known as Digambara Samiyar(Nambiar) is out to expose him. He appears in various dis-guises and succeeds in his attempt after the story takesseveral twists and turns.

Draupathi, who was associated with the famous theatretroupe TKS Brothers, played the heroine in love with a hand-some man (Narasimha Bharathi). D. Balasubramaniam, acharacter actor, was excellent as the crooked advocate. Hewas one of the few actors in those days who knew the secretof underplaying a role.

The novel is based on the theory that if a man is made to stayawake without sleep for three or four days, he will be in a moodto confess everything hidden in his mind! This theory has beenused to great effect in the film. To keep the lawyer awake, songand dance sequences featuring Lalitha-Padminiand KumariKamala were introduced.

M. N. Nambiar in several disguises asthe Samiyar wassuperb. Lakshmiprabha as a Devadasi created a sensation ina song sequence where she is shown changing clothes (ofcourse, behind a screen)! She sings ‘Podi ….poyendi… eduthuva…sikkiram … ayya varum neram aachu…’. This song provedpopular, especially in the manner in which was picturised witha touch of the erotic by T.R. Sundaram without stepping intothe ponds of vulgarity.i

Music was a plus point of the film (G. Ramanathan- assistedby S. M. Subbaiah Naidu, with lyrics by Marudhakasi, Ka. Mu.Sheriff, K. P. Kamakshi, Thanjai Ramaiah Dasand a compara-tive newcomer named Kannadasan). Many songs becamepopular such as the Diwali duet between a young girl and hergrandfather, ‘Oosi pattasey’ (a straight lift from a popularHindi tune ‘O...dilwalo!’), ‘Anna oru paithiyamaa’and ‘Parudappaparudappa parudappa’ (a straight lift from the Hindi hit of itsday, ‘Laraa lappa laraa...lappa…. in Ek Thi Ladki.) KumariKamala danced to the well-known song ‘Natharmudimellirukkum’. ‘Digambara Samiyar was a hit and has beenrevived on television in recent years

One of the classics of Tamil Literature “EdhirparaadhaMuttham’ (Unexpected Kiss) by the Pondicherry-basedPuratchi Kavingnar Bharathidasanwas chosen byT. R.Sundaramto be made into a film. TRS, as he was familiarlyknown, was friendly with the renowned poet who had a healthyinterest for the film medium. He had written the story anddialogues for the Modern Theatres box-office bonanza ‘AayiramThalai Vaangi Apoorva Chintamani’. But, as a rationalist, hedid not want his name in the credits of the film, an incredible folktale.

TRS engaged the American Tamil filmmaker Ellis R. Dunganto direct this film, and this Hollywood-trained technician, whointroduced new methods of onscreen narration into TamilCinema with his ‘Sathi Leelavathi’, invested Ponmudi withglamour, glitz, and glosswhich were far ahead of its time. Heintroduced daring love sequences featuring the hero NarasimhaBharathi and the heroine Madhuri Devi in the film, which weresomewhat shocking to the conservative audiences of the1950s. For a lovemaking sequence on the beach, he arrangedfor sand from the Adyar beach to be brought to the studio inSalemand shot the sequence, mixing it with long shots of theElliot’s Beach.

SMS to consumers to give up LPG subsidy uncalled forSir, Indian Oil Corporation has been soliciting its LPG consumers

through SMS to join its campaign of ‘Nation Building’ by giving upLPG subsidy. While it is true that the burden arising out of thesubsidy is heavy, the Oil companies must first set their house in orderand supply LPG cylinders at full cost to all its employees.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Petroleum and Oil should not exemptMPs, MLAs and bureaucrats from the 12 subsidized cylinder caps peryear to save on money. Oil companies must weed out the corruptionfrom the system to ensure that subsidized cylinders do not find a wayinto the open market. This in itself would bring about a huge saving. Many households do not consume 12 cylinders and do not keep trackof the consumption. Distributors take advantage of this and divertthe balance subsidy into the open market and make a killing. IfAadhaar is made mandatory to avail subsidy, even if the distributorsresort to divert the stocks, at least the subsidy amount would getcredited to the consumers who do not use up the entire cappedquantity. When there are so many ways to restrict the supply ofsubsidized cylinders and save money, the request of the oil compa-nies to the common man, who is already hit hard by the spiralingprices of all essentials, is unjust and uncalled for. – V. S. Jayaraman,31, Motilal Street, West Mambalam

DRESS CODEGood old Mahatma Gandhi earned his law degree from England

where, during his studentship, he must have worn trousers whichprotected him from the biting cold that Mother Nature haddecreed as nature’s gift to the island.

Gandhi’s peregrinations took him to South Africa where equa-torial climate made him progressively shed the British secondskin of woollen clothes as his first foray into things Indian and thecompulsive draw to the all pervasive dhoti of the Indian male. That, I believe, is one of the causes that impelled him to dump hispractice and a few molar teeth in South Africa and return to goodold India where the Sun god was and is the reigning climatic deityto make the Indian a warm fellow. The degrees of warmth isdependant on one’s positioning relative to the equator!

Back in India, Gandhi plunged into a war to free the countryfrom all that is imperial western, one phase of which was theburning of all western clothes. Mounds of western clothes includ-ing, I assume, the choking legal practitioner’s black gown weremade a bonfire of. Gandhi, in one of the meetings, representing theCongress, with the Emperor in London, appeared swathed in adhoti and shawl and his majesty could find no fault in hispresentation of early freedom for India. In answer to a presscorrespondent on how, in just his thin dhoti and shawl, hemanaged to tackle the cold at the palace, Gandhi is reported tohave said,”His majesty wore enough clothes for both of us”!

Dhoti-wearing Gandhi and Co won us freedom to establishSports Clubs and various venues of entertainment among otherthings. Yet, recently, a Sports Club in Chennai is reported to haveallegedly indicated to a dhoti-wearing Judge of the Madras HighCourt and his companion lawyer friends in dhoti who are membersof the Club, that dhoti disqualifies them from entering, andrefused them entry because of their sartorial offence! That Judgesshould not be members of any Club is my verdict on this nastyepisode of dress code violation. Seclusion should be their credo!

Android app to help commuterstrack locations of MTC busesBy Our Staff Reporter

G. Dileep Kumar, an IT employee, has developed a mobile Androidapplication ‘My MTC’ to keep track of plying MTC buses through GPStracking.

Dileep said that MTC has not provided any mechanism for itscommuters to keep track of bus schedules and delays in running time.It results in commuters waiting and spending anxious moments at busstops. He said that his ‘My MTC’ app would try to solve this problemas it is a crowd sourcing application developed to track real time buslocations for Chennai city buses.

Bus commuters who download this app to their phones and use it canupdate the current location of their bus during their commute.

The app would update this information into the server database andinstantly notify any other user searching for the same bus numberabout its current location.

App users can also setup a permanent notification alarm so thatthey don’t have to process the request every time.

The app also has a built-in offline database of bus stops, route mapsand fares which he said would be updated regularly.

Users would also get important news alerts about bus diversions, new buses, bus strikes and more.

Android phone users can download the ‘My MTC’ app from GooglePlay Store.

Dileep resides in Thoraipakkam. His phone number is 91767 60402.
