Lyttelton Harbour Morning Tea Event Cholmondeley House Launches Funding Appeal

When a child is vulnerable and a family is in crisis Cholmondeley (Chum-ley) steps up to provide short

term care and education. Situated in Governors Bay, Cholmondeley provides emergency and planned

short term respite care for children aged between 5-12 years whose families are experiencing distress

and their current systems of support are inadequate or not available.

Since 1925 it has provided care for over 25,500 children. Short term can be defined as anything

between 24 hrs to four weeks but the average is between 3-5 days. The service is non-prescriptive

and can be flexible to meet the child's and their family's needs. As a result of the February 2011

earthquake the original Cholmondeley Home was demolished. And since this date the services have

been located at Living Springs, 10 minutes up the road at Allandale, while a replacement home is

designed and built.

As a charity providing emergency and short-term respite care for Canterbury children, Cholmondeley

House is seeking donations following a significant increase in demand for its services. Those interested

Community Morning Tea Fundraiser, Friday 26 July

In support of Cholmondeley House, two local businesses Stark Brothers and Independent Provedoring and hosting a BIG morning

tea on Friday July 26, 10am at 20 Norwich Quay. Everyone around the Lyttelton Harbour Community is invited. Entry is by gold coin

donation and all funds raised will go toward the re-building of Cholmondely Children’s Home. Sausages, fish bites, club sandwiches

and coffee are all on the menu, and event organisers hope to see plenty of people there. If you would like to volunteer your skills

Vale John Cleaver Gifts to Lyttelton

Last week the Lyttelton township lost one of its community champions, Captain John Donald Cleaver. This loss to the community will

be wide spread and Wendy Everingham has written the following in acknowledgment of all that he has given to this community:

Captain John Cleaver died at the age of 85 after a sudden illness. For myself I had only known John for ten years but he was quite

influential in my community life. Early on I can remember going to visit him and his wife at their home on Reserve Terrace. At that

stage he was filling me in on all the work he had done with Project Lyttelton. He wanted me to have all the past designs for the Main

Street project that he’d helped coordinate. For those of you who may not know this, John was one of the founding members of

Project Lyttelton in 1994. He helped create an organisation that would have been quite unique for its time. A community group that

was proactive rather than re-active to the wishes of the community. He gave the current Project Lyttelton team the foundation to

create all the great community initiatives that have evolved from the organisation over the last ten years.

He was also instrumental in the founding of the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre. He was the Chair of that organisation until

2007 when he handed the reins onto me. One of the key projects that he facilitated was documenting the townships history leading

to the registration of Lyttelton Township as an Historic Area with the Historic Places Trust. He painstakingly collected any historical

documentation for the town and to this day we have that folder as a resource at the Information Centre.

His other major historical achievement was the creation of the Torpedo Boat Museum at Magazine Bay. Working closely with his

good friend David Bundy and others they restored the old Magazine Building to hold the remains of the Torpedo Boat. Over many

years he also worked tirelessly to get the Lyttelton Gaol restored. The earthquakes meant this dream was unable to be realised in his

life time.

For many years he was also the Chair of the Lyttelton Residents Association. He worked hard for main street improvements, port

access improvements, noise controls and many other issues that came up. He was instrumental in the council amalgamation of

Banks Peninsula with the City. John was also an active member of Holy Trinity Lyttelton. He played a role in the return of Saint

Saviours to Lyttelton, helped in the building of the former church lounge at Holy Trinity plus was an active parish member.

The Masonic Lodge was also a major part of his life. He’d been a member since 1952! It was lovely to see all his colleagues farewell

him at the memorial service. His home lodge was the Lodge of Unanimity in St David’s Street. He tried to connect the Lodge with the

wider community. Always hosting opening days for Heritage Week and pushing the boundaries to get more people to experience

the building. One vivid memory I have was allowing an experimental music concert at the Lodge several years ago as an event for

the Festival of Lights.

I have only been able to touch on a John’s life for the last ten years so this is just a brief tribute to him for the wonderful legacy that

has left this community during that period. Thank you Captain John Donald Cleaver. QSM

Build the Creche Coffee Culture Foundation Initiative

Coffee Culture sources its coffee beans directly from the Sigri

Plantation in a remote area of Papua New Guinea. Sourcing

beans directly from the region means that the owners have a

direct relationship with the people that they source their

product from. This direct relationship enables the owners to

be able to help directly with the lives of their workers.

Recently when workers were asked what would make their

lives easier, they requested a crèche to be built to enable

their children to go to school and be looked after while they

were in the fields working.

The Coffee Culture group comprises a series of franchised

stores and the Lyttelton store is one of these. Within the

franchise, the organisation has created a Charitable

Foundation and it is through this foundation that all the

stores seek to help the people they are working with.

To make the crèche become a reality for the workers in

Papua New Guinea all of the stores are trying to raise

$40,000. Lyttelton Coffee Culture has a target of $2,000 to

be raised by the end of August for their share of the project.

Lyttelton Coffee Culture owners, Emily and Samira, are

determined to meet this goal and so they are creating a

series of fund raising initiatives. The first is a school holiday

in store colouring competition. For a gold coin your child will

be equipped with pencils and a colouring sheet. Check out

some of the colourful creations already posted on the wall. If

you are feeling more generous you are able to buy a tin of

beautiful pencils for $9.50. 100% of this money will support

the fundraising.

The colouring competition will be the first of many initiatives

to support this worthwhile cause. Keep an eye out for their

initiatives so that you can help them reach or better

Lyttelton’s $2,000 goal.

Fate Sealed for Lyttelton Police Station Staff at the Lyttelton Police Station have accepted the inevitable - the historic

station, built between 1880 and 1882, faces imminent demolition. It was red

stickered after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Staff now work out of a

prefabricated station which sits on the station car park.

At 130 years of continuous use, the original station was Police’s longest

serving building. Now, it is beyond affordable repair, some parts knee-deep in

debris that showered down during the big shake and aftershocks.

Inspector Malcolm Johnston, Southern Area Commander, says after months of

engineering investigations, it had proved uneconomic to repair the station,

which was badly damaged in the 22 February earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. "This is sad news for Police, for our local

staff and for the Lyttelton community" he says.

“The station is an iconic building for the port town, which has already lost of many of its historic buildings. Over the past several

months we have worked with our engineers to explore every possible opportunity to repair the station. However we have received

advice that to repair the building to an adequate standard would cost at least $1.5 million dollars. That is significantly more than

the cost of a new station, and is not economic. But we remain committed to Lyttelton and we are giving the local community an

assurance that Police will retain a presence here and a new facility will be built."

For some good news though, pieces of the quake-damaged Lyttelton police station will be salvaged before the historic building is

demolished, with the hope of reusing them when a new town station is built. New Zealand Police Museum director Rowan Carroll

has been through the station and identified "unique elements", including the front door, wooden stairwell and two interior

doorways with frosted windows. "We're just so lucky the glass is still intact," she said.

Another notable slice of history was a patch in the stairway handrail at the top turn, which had worn right down from more than

130 years of hands passing over it. “The wooden staircase is a gem” Rowan says. “The banister curves, and staff climbing the stairs

naturally hold on at that point. The result is that the wood is discoloured from generations of police hands pulling themselves up.

That really struck home to me how special these artefacts are to Police history.”

Significant items including the staircase, archways, doorways and windows will be rescued and stored at the Air Force Museum in

Wigram. Ideally, they will be reinstated in new Police buildings in Canterbury. “If we don’t save these things now, they will be lost

forever” says Rowan. Carroll said the items would be salvaged and safely stored until they could be incorporated into a new police

station, hopefully in the port town.

Lyttelton police are working in portable cabins beside the station until a decision is made about a rebuild. One option is developing

a shared facility in Lyttelton with other emergency services on another London Street site.

No date has been set for the demolition of the station, with tenders still out. Lyttelton Sergeant Gary Manch said losing the station

was "terrible" and that saving anything that could be reused was "fantastic". Police were committed to an ongoing presence in the

town, he said.

Architectural Note:

The Lyttelton police Station was designed in the Victorian Italianate style of the period 1837-1901. As a police station this particular

example of the style is austere, and it therefore lacks the usual architectural details which otherwise distinguish Italianate as a

picturesque style. One of the style's most prominent characteristics is present however, and indeed it is this characteristic which

identifies the building as Italianate.

Illegal Tyre Dumping Scenic Rapaki Location Littered with Tyres

A busload of tourists pulled up at a Canterbury

lookout yesterday, only to find the area had

been littered with dozens of tyres.

Christchurch Tours operator Robin McCarthy

was taking a tour around Governors Bay Rd

when he stopped at a popular lookout just

outside Rapaki Bay.

''We all piled out expecting to look at the

lovely view, but when we looked over the edge

we saw the area had been covered in tyres,''

he said.

''It looked like a professional dumping

ground.'' McCarthy estimated that 60 tyres

had been dumped down the hill.

''There could have been more because some of them had rolled a long way down into the bushes.'' The tourists were ''not

impressed'' with the sight, he said. ''It's not a good look when we promote ourselves as a clean, green country and then there is

rubbish everywhere.''

McCarthy believed someone had dumped the tyres because they did not want to pay to dispose of them properly. ''It's terrible for

the environment. Tyres take a long time to decompose and can really have an adverse effect,'' he said. ''It's awfully irresponsible

that someone just dumped them.''

McCarthy said he had contacted Environment Canterbury and the Christchurch City Council about the tyres. He said ''a little bit of

detective work'' could solve who dumped the tyres. ''Judging by the grass, they had been dumped over the last day or so,'' he said.

''If the police wanted to look at security cameras and fingerprints, we could find out who did this. There can't be that many people

with this many tyres and the equipment to dump them.''

A city council spokesman said the council would look into the incident. "We will address this straight away and get it cleaned up. It

looks from the photo as if someone has just dumped those there on purpose which is very serious. We want to find out who is

responsible."

Teach, Share, Show or Tell : Tutors Wanted New Festival for Lyttelton Harbour

With so many interesting and talented people kicking about the Lyttelton area, it seemed about time we had the opportunity to

celebrate and share the great knowledge and experience of the people of our area. Project Lyttelton has dreamed up the

Lyttelton Harbour Kura - festival of learning. For ten days, the Lyttelton Harbour will become a hot spot for the sharing of skills,

ideas and knowledge.

Do you have something you would like to share - a class or workshop? See the information below for prospective tutors and get in

touch with Lucette Hindin, Project Lyttelton’s Events Co-Ordinator. Tutors do not have to be from the Lyttelton Harbour area,

although some connection would be preferable. All events will take place in this area.

Lyttelton Harbour Kura - a festival of workshops to develop skills, share wisdom and inspire resilient communities.

The festival will take place September 27th - October 6th 2013 [two weekends, with a week of school holidays in between]

Theme: The festival has the broad theme of sustainability, resilience and wellbeing. Taking the approach that almost everyone in

the harbour area has something they could teach, we plan to offer a wide range of workshops and short courses including garden-

ing, cooking, arts and performing arts, crafts, outdoor/fitness etc.

The Tin Palace | Seeking Submissions Next Exhibition: Transit of Dreams

The Harbour Arts Collective’s opening exhibition at the Tin Palace is “Transit of Dreams”. We are seeking artworks to form a group

show that will present the variety, quality and innovation of artists working in the vicinity. Transit of Dreams will run from Thurs-

day 29th August until Sunday 8th September. The exhibition opening will take place on Wednesday 28th August.

The submission guidelines are as follows:

� Works are sought which respond to the theme of dreams, fantasy, illusion or imagined reality.

� Include an artist statement about your work, biography and contact details.

� Provide dimensions, high resolution image of your work and specify any additional requirements that will need to be taken

into consideration.

� If you are represented by another gallery, please ensure that you have permission to exhibit your work at the Tin Palace.

� All work must be delivered by the deadline (20th August), suitably framed, wired and prepared for hanging / display.

� The Tin Palace holds Public Liability insurance and great care will be taken of your work however the Tin Palace accepts no

liability for damage or theft of any work in the gallery or whilst in transit. Insuring the work is the responsibility of the artist.

* Artists selected to exhibit their works in a group show will pay a $50 fee.

� Unless otherwise specified, all works will be considered for sale at the retail price indicated by the artist and 20% of the retail

Generation Zero’s Speaking Tour: What’s the Holdup? Getting New Zealand Moving on Climate Change

In review of attending this talk, naturally the large audience consisted mainly of young people, as that is the nature of the

movement – getting the young activists to stir-up us oldies! They made powerful points about smart energy solutions, in

transport, heat & industry, and electricity, as well as actions to take, especially with local body elections coming up. For example,

plenty to share In Lyttelton so many residents grow vegetables; or have fruit trees literally dripping with produce. Plenty to Share is about sharing any

excess produce with the community. So if your lemon tree is yellow with goodness and you can’t keep up with making lemon curd, bring

those surplus fruits down to the organisers, where every Saturday the swapping of produce is well underway in Lyttelton on the corner of

London and Canterbury Street; and also in Diamond Harbour on a Saturday morning at the village centre. If there is something on the

Plenty to Share table that you would like to take home, then you are warmly invited to do so.

Oops! Last week in the Lyttelton Review we ran an article on the Fifth Ship art installation by Trent Hiles located on the corner of London

Banks Peninsula Zone Committee Focus on Sediment Issues

The Canterbury Water Banks Peninsula Zone Committee will meet for its regular monthly public meeting on Tuesday 23 July, at

the Governors Bay Hotel, in Governors Bay. A key focus for the meeting will be sediment issues in and around Whakaraupo

Lyttelton Harbour.

The committee will receive a report from Canterbury University summarising the research papers and reports on sedimentation

and circulation in Whakaraupo Lyttelton Harbour. The report highlights gaps in the research that has been undertaken to date and

identifies a number of actions that could be taken to reduce inputs in to the harbour.

The committee will also receive a report from Environment Canterbury on ecological monitoring in the harbour and mudflats. This

report highlights the effect of sediment on the ecological health of the mudflats and recommends sediment control measures be

taken in the main contributing catchments.

At the meeting, the committee will also consider two proposals to fund planting and fencing along local waterways – one in Head

of the Bay [Lyttelton harbour] the other on Okains Bay. To date around $75,000 has been allocated for biodiversity work in the

Banks Peninsula zone. The committee has further funding for this type of work. You can find more information and an application

At Tuesday’s meeting, the committee will also receive a summary compliance report from Environment Canterbury for Banks

Peninsula since January 2013. The Banks Peninsula Zone Committee typically meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Zone

Ticehurst Road and Ticehurst Terrace Junction SCIRT would like to inform residents that an independent contractor will be replacing the power pole at

the intersection of Ticehurst Road and Ticehurst Terrace. The work is scheduled to commence on

Thursday 25 July 2013 for approximately two days. The work will take place between 7:00am and

5:00pm. To ensure the safety of all residents and the workers carrying out the work, an intersection

closure will be in place during the hours of work. The work may have an impact intermittently on the

Changes to the Way Some Buses Look With the sale of Leopard’s urban services to GoBus now finalised, Environment Canterbury is

advising people that they are likely to start seeing some changes to how the buses look.

The fleets from both companies are now being combined which means there is the potential

for Leopard branded buses to be travelling GoBus routes and vice-versa. Gradually all

Leopard branding will be replaced, and the bus livery changed to that of GoBus; however,

until this transition is complete passengers are being made aware that the bus they catch

could look different to what they are accustomed too.

The actual bus services are not affected by these changes; all buses will continue to travel

routes as usual. It is best to look at the destination board, but if in doubt ask the driver.

Road Closure: Main Road, Sumner Main Rd will be closed between 9pm and 5am from the 21st to 26th of July, between Shag Rock and Clifton Hill Road. The road is

being closed to allow the containers to be reset as they have slumped due to the ongoing shakes. The containers will be picked up

and moved, the road under them fixed and then the containers placed back in their original location. Contractors have set aside
