  • The measurement of an earth quakes strength based based on seismic waves and movement along faults.
  • How is magnitude measured?
  • Mercalli scale, and richter scale.

3. Waves

  • What are earthquake waves called?
  • Seismic waves, P waves, S waves, surface waves.
  • What two types of seismic waves are there?
  • P waves (Primary), S waves (Secondary).
  • What two types of body waves are there?
  • Body and surface waves.

4. Body Waves

  • How do P waves travel?
  • P waves travel through the body of the earth.
  • How do S waves travel?
  • S waves travel only through solids.

  • P waves travel faster than S waves.

  • Elastic Rebound, is a theory which attributes faulting to stresses.
