“WE WANTED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT,” says Dan Sater. And looking at the designer’s brand new home that he just finished building for himself, it is indeed a departure from the opulent Mediterranean villas for which he’s well known. The clean, streamlined Prairie-style home also isn’t an obvious choice to go in its Fort Meyers, Fla. location. But perhaps the very unexpectedness of it all is what makes it feel so fresh and contemporary – and so right for the designer’s new phase of life.

With the kids grown, it was time for Sater and his wife Debbie to downsize. Instead of starting completely from scratch, Sater decided to start with one of his existing farmhouse designs and modify it. “Being a Frank Lloyd Wright fan” he gravitates to Prairie style, so the exterior went in that direction. Another must: “I didn’t want it to dominate the streetscape.” Although he’s a car enthusiast (Jaguars in particular), Sater wanted to evoke an earlier time by de-emphasizing the garage from the front. So a long driveway winds around to the back, where the four-car garage offers more than enough room for his prized vehicles.

That leaves the front of the home free to show off pe-riod-appropriate Craftsman details like tapered columns, a wide porch, and the low-pitched, hipped roofline with a large central dormer. Gorgeous art glass windows add another beautiful touch and are echoed inside the home in the pattern of the decorative beams on the great room’s ceiling (showing the impressive attention to detail). The leftover wood from the ceilings and porches was used in the entertainment center as a beautiful accent behind the television.

Door and windows to the backyard let light stream into the great room. To the left, the kitchen beckons guests to pull up a stool at the island. Chic pendant lamps with exposed bulbs hang overhead, with a coordinating fixture above the table in the nearby nook. From here, it’s just a step outside to the spacious covered veranda and relax-ing afternoons in the shade.

The sleek, Prairie-inspired exterior reflects the designer’s appreciation of Frank Lloyd Wright and his iconic style.

To the right of the entry, a study sits behind double barn doors with frosted glass, providing a flexible space that’s pri-vate enough for use as a guest bedroom when needed. An Amish-made custom desk faces a pull-out sofa bed.

Private spaces offer equally appealing amenities focused on everyday utility. “In the master, you know, we abandoned the tub,” says Sater. Instead, a large walk-in shower with linen storage at hand (a smart place indeed to store washcloths and such) is the practical focus of the bathroom. Double vanities and closets complete the suite.

Two more bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, sit all the way on the opposite side of the home, and are entered from

totally different areas to further preserve privacy. Guest suite 2 resides near the ultra-organized mud room entrance from the garage, near the generous laundry room.

Acting as his own builder, Sater completed the project in about ten months from conception to finish. “I didn’t really start from scratch,” he notes. The one-acre, wooded lot required only minimal clearing, which happily met the goal of keeping most of the trees: “We took down about 12 of the 50 trees on the lot,” he says.

So, now that Sater and his family have lived in the home for four weeks (at the time of this interview), how did it turn out? “It feels great, we really love it.”

The great room’s built-in shelves hold old-fashioned cameras, lots of antique glass, and other objects “reflecting who we are and how we live.”
