What’s WhatART, CULTURE & DESIGN

SCREEN ART By appointment through January 31, 2021, view Venetian Love at Fondation Valmont’s (right) restored 16th-century Palazzo Bonvicini in Venice, Italy. The exhibition features a trio of artists who interpret the fantastical beauty of Venice in sculpted glass, massive photographs, and Carnival-inspired masks. Short videos of the dynamic works can be found on the foundation’s IGTV channel. fondationvalmont.com

Top museums have created virtual portals through which to experience the world’s most treasured works. On its 150th anniversary, New York’s Metropolitan Museum launches The Met 360° Project (metmuseum.org), a series of short videos where viewers seemingly soar above The Cloisters, enter the majestic Temple of Dendur, and explore the museum’s medieval armor collection. Paris’s Louvre (louvre.fr) is leading online tours of its galleries and showing interactive videos of its most famous artworks—including a virtual-reality visit with the enigmatic Mona Lisa. London’s Victoria & Albert (vam.ac.uk) spotlights the best of its collections—from ancient Chinese ceramics to Alexander McQueen’s evening dresses. Take the Vatican Museums’ (museivaticani.va) new online tours of the galleries (including the Sistine Chapel) and of its immense archives.

A pop-up Pace Gallery on Park Place in East Hampton Village is open through mid-October. The first show features new drawings by renowned Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. pacegallery.com

If you missed the glory years of ballet dancers Baryshnikov and Fonteyn, you can catch them on the Lincoln Center’s website, which is also streaming past Broadway productions, Jazz at Lincoln Center shows, and full-length performances like San Francisco Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet (below). lincolncenter.org

VIRTUAL VROOMDrive a McLaren at home, sort of. McLaren Automotive (cars .mclaren.com) collaborated with game developer Forza for new-every-week virtual adventures allowing fans to seemingly get behind the wheel of one of the world’s most exciting supercars (above). To celebrate Petersen Car Week, virtual vehicle debuts, online auctions, and the much-anticipated Concours d’Elegance will premiere on the Petersen Automotive Museum’s (petersen.org) YouTube channel on August 12, 2020.

BUY IT ONLINEAs auction houses cancel or postpone live auctions, they’ve quickly pivoted online, ramping up digital offerings in both web-based auctions and exclusive sales. Christie’s (christies.com) has scheduled 22 luxury auctions online—watches, wine, handbags, and jewels (including a 28.8-carat diamond ring with a presale estimate for up to $2 million). In step, Sotheby’s (sothebys.com) moved its marquee sales of contemporary, impressionist, and modern art—featuring works by Picasso and Clyfford Still—entirely live online. Private galleries are experimenting with virtual viewing rooms and augmented reality: Gagosian (gagosian.com) presents One Artist, One Work, One Week—engaging insights and a single artwork per week. Pace (pacegallery.com) has curated a series of online viewing rooms spotlighting the gallery’s expansive roster, such as Loie Hollowell’s drawings created during this period of quarantine. Hauser & Wirth’s (hauserwirth.com) viewing rooms include well-knowns like Arshile Gorky and Jack Whitten, but don’t miss a more intimate gallery displaying affordable works by gallery staff.

What’s What HOTELS

Experience the glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age at The Prospect Hotel, a vintage 1939 Regency-style building hidden away on a residential street, but recognizable by its black-and-white-striped awnings and red door. The Martyn Lawrence Bullard–designed rooms are a mad mix of Chinoiserie wallpaper, leopard-patterned carpets, and multitudes of mirrors inspired by the property’s Tinseltown history. From $300; theprospecthollywood.com

The 1920s Kyoto Central Telephone Company building has been repurposed by visionary Japanese architect Kengo Kuma as the Ace Hotel Kyoto—the American chain’s first hotel in Japan (above). Rooms open to small gardens or the courtyard; mesh screens and louvered windows allow in fresh air. Local artisans crafted furniture for both Western- and tatami-style suites. From $250; acehotel.com

Ancient Huế, in Vietnam’s old Imperial capital, is an elegant collection of five beautifully realized carved-wood homes set among lush gardens and around a pool. From $274; ancienthue.com

On a secluded 10-acre property in central Austin, Texas, the historic Commodore Perry Estate (below), now part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, has been reimagined as a resort-style hotel with 47 antique-filled guest rooms and suites curated by interior designer Ken Fulk, who serves as the property’s creative director. From $583; aubergeresorts.com

The Lake House on Canandaigua (above) is basically summer camp for adults. The New York escape, a 5.5-hour drive from Manhattan, has 125 rooms decorated in crisp white and wood. There’s canoeing and paddling on the lake and private decks primed to sip craft cocktails made with herbs from the property’s gardens. From $375; lakehousecanandaigua.com

The regal, white-stone Palace Elisabeth sits on a sea-facing main square in Hvar, Croatia, an easy stroll to the city’s pretty port. Most of the 45 palatial guest rooms have views of the sea and nearby islands. Glass walls open to connect the Zen-like white and gold indoor pool to an outdoor sundeck. From $486; suncanihvar.com

Brenton Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island, has 57 nautically inspired rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the harbor and the city’s well-preserved colonial buildings, boutiques, and restaurants on the historic waterfront. From $300; brentonhotel.com

Miraval Berkshires (below)in Lenox, Massachusetts, offers many paths to well-being—from more than 100 signature treatments at the Life in Balance Spa to outback hiking, mountain biking, yoga, and fitness classes. From $479/day, including meals; miravalberkshires.com

In the Bordeaux region along the Route du Médoc wine road, 18th-century estate La Maison d’Estournel (left) has been elegantly converted to a 14-room boutique hotel. Borrow an e-bike with a chef-packed wicker basket to explore the nearby vineyards around Saint-Estèphe and return to the vineyard-view terrace to enjoy a local vintage. From $190; lamaison-estournel.com

What’s What HOTELS

SCENTS OF PLACEPerfumers rely on the fact that scents evoke some of our strongest memories. That truth is not lost on hoteliers, who hope an at-home whiff of their signature scent will prompt a return visit. Plaza Athénée (dorchestercollection .com) gives departing guests’ luggage a quick spritz of the hotel’s signature scent Ambre Mythique by Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier. When guests open their suitcases back home, voilà! The Langham’s (langhamhotels.com) dewy, green Ginger Flower scent was the first and is still one of the most famous hotel scents. Cult-favorite fragrance house Le Labo created a rich, dark, and complex scent (above) for EDITION Hotels (editionhotels.com) and the light, floral Rose 31 fragrance for Fairmont Hotels (fairmont .com); though The Savoy (fairmont.com) in London partnered with elite British perfumer Penhaligon to create Savoy Steam, echoing a hammam experience. The Ritz-Carlton’s (ritzcarlton .com) citrus-spicy Purple Water was created by eminent New Bond Street jeweler Asprey. Barcelona’s Majestic Hotel & Spa (majestichotelgroup.com) diffuses its sophisticated, seductive scent Musc Impérial (by Atelier Cologne) throughout

the hotel. The scent of the sea is evoked by Eau d’Italie from Positano’s cliffside hotel, Le Sirenuse (lesirenuse .com). La Réserve Group (michelreybierhospitality.com), including La Réserve Eden au Lac in Zurich (below) and La Réserve Paris, has a scent that can best be described as luxurious and elegant. Most signature scents—candles, diffusers, and room sprays—are available through the hotels’ websites. Air/Aroma (air-aroma.com) designs scents for hotels, fashion brands, and high-end events, and can create an exclusive scent for your home or office.

THE TAKE AWAYHotel chefs are teaching online cooking classes and cocktail-making lessons. But you can also access their recipes via their cookbooks (above): The Ranch at Malibu released Food Food Food ($38; theranchmalibu.com), which includes over 100 gorgeous, easy-to-make, plant-based recipes developed by Ranch chefs. Singita: Our Food Journey ($75; singita.com) shares bold, African-inspired recipes from the famed lodges and safari camps (below).

Celebrity chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa (aka Nobu) shares recipes for his most popular Japanese-fusion dishes in the coffee table–sized World of Nobu ($70; pie.co.jp). Look to COMO Hotel & Resorts’ The Pleasures of Eating Well ($67; comoshambhala.com) for chef-crafted, Asian-inspired recipes. Chef Raymond Blanc of double-Michelin-starred Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons has released The Lost Orchard ($45; raymondblanc.com) with his most celebrated from-the-garden dishes. Cal-a-Vie, a destination spa on 500 acres near San Diego, presents its Beautiful Living cookbook ($75; cal-a-vie.com) with healthy recipes and lifestyle tips. From Lake Como, Villa d’Este’s A Culinary Experience ($125; villadeste.com) features classic Italian recipes and the stories behind them.

Montage International has partnered with membership-based One Medical. Guests of Montage and Pendry hotels get a free 30-day membership after their stay to the provider’s digital services for access to health-care professionals via video chat and messaging. montagehotels.com
