FlhST QUARTER, 1993
Greetings in the name of our Lord who "is our refuge and
strength! an everpresent help in trouble." Psalm 46:1 Much has
happened here since I wrote mylast quarterly newsletter just before
Thanksgiving. But the Lord is faithfuland we are recovering.
As you know, the Maili worship auditorium was virtually
destroyed in the September11th hurricane. Through the financial and
physical help of other congregations andfriends we were able to get
the asbestos shingles removed professionally and finishdemolishing
it. We were fortunate to have a.room in. the cement block
educationalbuilding in which we can and do meet for worship. We did
not realize it, but a government inspector pointed out to one of
our men that the hurricane lifted the roofon one corner of that
building. On New Years EJve another wind storm (these are frequent
during winter months) blew off the roof of two rooms in that
building - overthe preacher's office and our copy room.
Now a contractor is working on a bid to repair the roof and to
do some remodeling. If we can take out some partitions (they are
made of blocks but are already cracked)and make four small
classroom into one large room, we should be able to have a
smallpreschool there and use it for worship, too. We also need to
put a retaining wallaround that building and fill in a larger area
to strengthen the foundation andpreserve it.
The repair of the restroom building is effectively finished
except for some trimand painting. In addition to the new roof,
interior woodwork and plumbing were replaced. When we sought the
original repair peimit, we did not need an electricalpermit. The
hurricane pulled up the buried electrical line and ripped off the
entrance box. We had to wait for the electrical permit and the
inspector. We alsoneeded new locks for the new doors which would
meet the preschool requirements. Theyhad to be ordered. Altogether
it took longer than we expected.
Now back to the Thanksgiving Singspiration on November 22. The
crowd filled theseats under our borrowed canopy and some stood in
the yard. Six congregations wererepresented and three of them
brought special music. After refreshments several ofthe men
assisted in taking down the canopy and returning the chairs. I
hurried toshow the men where to put things and tripped hard on a
tent peg, falling heavily on myleft hip. It was so painful when I
tired to move it an ambulance was called. My hipwas borken; it was
set and a pin inserted the next day. I spent a week in the
hospitalover Thanksgiving. The news quickly spread over the island.
I had numberous visitsand calls from many friends, especially the
young people we had nurtured at Palolo Valley Church. The hospital
workers were all amazed at my strength and recovery. I wastold that
it might take up to three months for the bone to heal, but at two
months thex-ray showed the bone completely healed. The muscle is
still weak and I limp, but Ikeep exercising and practicing walking,
so it is improving. The accident did not prevent my vacation trip
to visit my children in San Jose over the holidays.
On October 12 I had glaucoma and cataract surgery on my right
eye. I now have 20/3Ovision in my right eye and colors are so
vivid. I do not wear glasses. However, thecataract on the left eye
is getting denser and I have double vision with it - 20/50vision. I
see two moons, and o's on the eye chart look like 8's. I also
periodcallyhave a rash on my cheek below my left eye. The doctor
thinks it may be a reaction tothe eye drops, but I need to continue
the drops to keep the pressure down in that eye.So we have decided
to have a glaucoma/cataract operation on my left eye on April 19.I
had good recovery from both my hip and eye surgeries which I
attribuie to the Lord'shealing hand. Please continue to pray for
this surgery, too. I am grateful for somany who tell me they do
pray for me regularly.
I had stopped driving before my eye surgery because of poor
night vision and the signswere blurry. Later I could not get out
much or drive because of my hip. I have juststarted to drive again
and can now go the grocery and bank for myself. My daughterand her
husband have been so good to run these errands and look after me.
She stilltakes me into Honolulu, but I drive in this local area. I
probably will never challenge that heavy traffic. When I quit
driving, our preacher began picking up the children for my Bible
Club on Wednesdays and our Sunday night classes. After I had
revoeredsufficiently from my fall, he began to bring them to my
home for Bible Club. He willprobably continue to do the
driving.
The family with the teenagers have not been present in our
services this year, so Ihave begun to teach a class for the
children and three of my Bible Club members havebeen coming on
Sunday morning, too. Zola Brown teaches them in the evening -
she
-
serves at the Waialua church in the mornings. The boy from the
Buddhist family hadmoved out of our area but is back now. He is
growing in so many ways.
We are concerned that this large family has stopped attending.
They showed such promise of being devout leaders. When we talk to
them they always have an excuse, but itis obvious that they have
other reasons. We cannot ascertain what it is. They hadformerly
been offended in another congregation and had not worshiped
anywhere foryears. Please pray they will remain true to the Lord,
and get involved somewhere.March 26, 2? will be our annual Women's
Conference. I am serving on the WorkshopCommittee and am a part of
the Steering Committee. We covet your prayers for this, too. A
former co-worker here,and_a: dear-friend-, Melba Hobbs, will be
visiting^mein March. She chose this time to come so she could
attend the conference. We regetting excited.
The Loid has blessed me with faithful supporters. When my needs
increase, my incomeseems to go up, too. However, as Maili Church
faces the prospect of large expenditures to repair/remodel her
building, we need additional funds. Many persons haveresponded to
that need and have sent special gifts. If you or your congregation
canhelp, it will be greatly appreciated. Checks should be written
to Maili ChristianChurch. I'm the treasurer so you can send them
directly to me.
May the Lord have His way in your life and mine as we seek to
glorify Him.Yours, relying on Him,

Greetings from the 50th State in His name who promised, "Lo, I
am with you always." What a comforting and encouraging promise.
Though we may "be far apart,we are always in His presence, and He
knows and cares ahout each of us.
It is always a joy to be able to say, "It is FINISHED". The
restroom repair at Mail!Church is FINISHED. Hy eye surgeries are
FINISHED. Our 1993 Women's Conference isover and my work with it is
FINISHED. So now we look ahead.
My last eye surgery was on April 19, so the healing is not
complete, but I am able todrive a^ain and should have glasses
within a couple of months. I see well withoutany at a distance but
use my old ones for close work. They are not a good fit, butare
useable. At my last examination the surgeon was over-joyed with my
vision andthe healing that had taken place in spite of some
post-surgery inflammation. My nexteye appointment is in early June.
Even a child noticed the improvement in my walkingSunday. That hip
muscle is getting stronger and the limp less noticeable. I don'tuse
a cane now except on exceedingly rough' terrain.
Every spiritual or physical gain is encouraging. Our preacher
was off the islandone recent Sunday, and a young man in the
congregation conducted the serviceleading the songs, making
announcements, giving the Communion meditation. He livesnear the
church and has attended there since he was a child. Like many young
people,he has wondered away at times, but is now really determined
to grow in the Lord. Ayoung man from Florida, who is in the
military service, saw our sign as he passedby on his way home one
evening. On the next Sunday he and his wife were in the service and
usually are present for both Sunday services. He even came aloneone
week when his wife worked.
Of course, our constant concern is to take the gospel to others.
I have distributedflyers concerning VBS and my after school class
to many homes "but with no response. Many Filipino families live in
the subdivision behind the church. As I was prayingrecently about
reaching the community, I thought how good it would be to have
Filipino visit them and form a class using their dialect. Then I
heard that a formerminister in the Filipino congregation at Waipahu
had resigned. I phoned and talkedto his wife about the possibility
of his working with us, and later asked him tofill the pulpit when
our preacher was away. A few days afterwards the current preacher
at the Waipahu chiarch made an appointment to talk to our preacher
and myself. We learned that they are finishing a course on
evangelism for about 10 of their folks.and they are excited about
using their training. We are proposing to call in our community and
invite folks to a class on Sunday mornings, probably to be taught
in theIlocano dialect. We hope to start about June 6.
We are having extremely dry weather which may be blessing only
to us, since two ofthe rooms in our building are without a roof. We
contacted a contractor who gave usa "budget bid" of $60-63,000 for
repair and renovation. Then his letter was taken toa bank to see
about the possibility of obtaining a loan. They said we needed
architectural drawings before an application could be made. The
architect, who works withthe contractor, is supposed be out in the
next week or two to look at the building
-
The last congregation on Oahu that the Owen Stills beganthe
Kaneohe Church, thennajned the Kahaluu Christian Churchhas
struggled for existence the past few years. The building was in a
low-lying area and the drainage problems made maintenanceexpensive
and time-consuming. It was finally agreed to disband the
congregation sothe members could serve in other places where they
felt they would be more effective. As they were moving, they asked
us to come and take any materials that we could useat Maili. We
brought and stored tables, chairs, communion table, etc. We are
usingsome of the teaching materials and the hymn books. Then when
the sale was completedthey gave us a check for $33,000. We
deposited this at the bank where we are applying for the loan. When
we get the paperwork in, including our plans to begin a preschool,
the loan should be quickly forthcoming. Please pray that this will
be so,and that the building permits can be quickly obtained.
The Women's Conference was a blessing and challenge to the 80 or
so ladies present. The theme verse was Eph. 3:16-1? (Weymouth),
"That Christ may settle down and be athome in your hearts by
faith." Robert Boyd Mungers sermon "My HeirtChrist's Home"provided
the morning devotions. All the messages and workshops helped us to
makeeach room" in our hearts ("living, dining," bedroom, etc.) a
place where Christ wouldfeel at home.
It was a special joy for me to have my friend, Melba, with me
for the conference. She enjoyed visiting with old friends and making
new ones. We also had a delightful time just visiting and doing
some sightseeing. She also did some chores for me.We especially
enjoyed a two-day trip to the Big Island.May "the Lord bless you
and keep you, the Lord make his face shne upon you and be gracious
to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you p'eace."
Yours in Him,
