The Sorbs are living their language; you can hear many children who are speaking the Sorbian language – that is nice and impressive”, FUEN- president Hans Heinrich Hansen says during the EUROPEADA 2012 in the bilingual region of Lusatia. Therefore Hansen, who is from the German minority in Nordschleswig in Denmark, fully understands the action that is making headlines in the Sorbian area of settlement at this very moment. “A language has to be visible and should not be hidden away, or otherwise it will disappear. That is why all the road signs in the area of settlement – both the local as well as the national signs –have to be bilingual”, says Hans Heinrich Hansen. I am glad that the Landrat (district head) and all the people I spoke with from the district council and the Bundestag (German national parliament) assured me that they are looking for a quick solution – I am therefore sure that there will be additional bilingual signs in Lusatia.“ Domowina-chairman David Statnik added: “For us, it is essential that our language can be seen everywhere – on an equal footing with the German language. Of course we do not ask for the impossible. That is why Domowina will continue to search for dialogue and find a solution for these outstanding questions that is acceptable for all parties involved, the chairman of Domowina says.
