ABOUT MEI’m a young lisbon guy, master in Product Design by the
Architecture Faculty - Technical University of Lisbon. I consider
myself a sociable, fun, dedicated and responsible person with a
strong team spirit. I like sports, nature, technology, materials and
colour and texture contrasts. My passion for Design has always
included product and communication although it was strongest
for Product Design, the main reason that motivated my decision
to specialize in this area.
As a designer, rather than create utopian concepts, I like to
idealize and develop tangible products that meet the needs in a
pratical and functional way. Because the real value of design or
designing resides in finding creative and objective solutions to
problems. During my activity I seek to transcend into each project
I develop, trying to go beyond the expected. I love the simple
design (sometimes even obvious) but with the projectual accuracy
and detail that make a product distinguish.
Still without professional experience in Design I’m now
looking for an opportunity to integrate an ambitious and
innovative project where I can apply my knowledge and skills in
the strategic development of products and services as well as
absorb information and experiences that allow me to improve in
both personal and professional levels.

Line of simple, modern, stackable and clean
kitchenware, stripped of details that cause dirt
accumulation. The set consists of three bowls, three boxes
for packing food, two strainers with metal mesh for solid
and liquid food and a colander for pasta.
The set of bowls for food preparation is composed of
three pieces ranging in size and capacity (1l, 2.5 l and 3.5
l). Each bowl has a non-slip rubber base and a handle for
a better transportation and handling. The set of boxes has
a concave shape similar to the bowls which improves the
grip of the piece to hands during the transport. Each box
has a circular relief in the center of the lid and a negative
on its basis that, independently of the random stacking the
boxes remain centered and fixed. The strainer for tea has
reduced dimensions so it can be rested on a mug or teapot,
while a higher strainer serves to drain rice and other solid
food. The last part of this family is the colander for pasta,
which can be used in two distinct ways. Its base allows use
the colander in a sink while the flap and the handle allow
for support over a bowl or pan.

Idealization of an ephemeral kiosk for presentation
of Santo Amaro neighborhood in Alcântara at an event
integrated into the festivities of Lisbon with a duration
of one month in Praça do Comércio and a limited area
of 6m² for its placement. With a predominant image of
popular and working-class district, Alcântara has an old
and diverse heritage with abundant examples of erudite
architecture, including some religious buildings and an
unusual number of palaces, totaling about fifty buildings
with historical and artistic interest.
The kiosk was designed to promote the places of
major tourist interest in the Santo Amaro’s neighborhood.
Very important in the design process was the history of
the area itself, always connected to the river and what
flows from it. The language of the kiosk has in part, some
influences of ship building in which the structure of vessels
in wood, made with pieces placed parallel, is transported
to the kiosk through wood slats placed along the kiosk
and conformed to its inclination which create nice light/
shadow games. This angle represents the slope of the
district that leans over the Tejo River.
The purpose of this kiosk is that its “box” can be used
after the event for other purposes within Alcântara area,
such as small outdoor exhibitions.

The city’s urban furniture mesh is usually very diverse,
including equipment from a variety of furniture lines and
brands, resulting in an aesthetic amalgam that does not fit
into its surroundings. The main purpose of this project was
the development of an urban equipment coherent family
with a formal language that was common to all parts.
The basis of the concept focused on the design
of a metal profile that was structuring and allowed
establishing a flexible modular system addressed to a
simple production and versatile combination of different
products. A second extruded element allows the junction
of the main components of each product. The structural
profile we have reached allows a modular design that
ensures the adequacy of the parts to unforeseen situations
and applications. The pieces that make up this family
shape the metropolis, not demanding role, ensuring the
functioning of the physical space and providing a visual
rhythm to that space.

The Pendura coat rack starts from of a typology
traditionally used by the shaker culture: the wooden
hanger rod. However that model proves to be inflexible to
not allow adjust the distance between hangers depending
on the volume and number of pieces placed.
The final product is intended to be simple, functional
and enables customization of the storage space according
to the needs. We chose the double hook hanger as this
allows arranging several pieces simultaneously and is
able to hang on coat hangers. The wood rack has the
same profile of hangers in lacquered aluminum sheet so
that each module can glide smoothly over its surface. Its
length may vary depending on the number of modules
required. A varied colour palette allows user to combine
different colors between modules and make this coat rack
an interesting decorative element.

The Chique chest results from the crossing of
traditional and modern/contemporary furniture,
through a harmonious dialogue between orthogonality
and fluidity. Chique starts from a convenient model that
fell into disuse over time: a high foot chest. This was
during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, much
used by the bourgeoisie and the upper classes. Their
organic shapes, very ornate and worked by carpenters,
made them almost pieces of art. The decor was stylish
and incorporated into this product as apparent contour.
The chest invokes the traditional legs, in wood turning,
and simplifies them keeping only his silhouette. The body
and legs of this piece of furniture are made of lacquered
MDF, while the handles are brass with a chrome or
lacquered finish.

The Phi bookshelf aims to make use of the height
space for storage of books and other objects. For such
we started from the theory of the golden ratio (or golden
section) with which we created two modules with
different heights to meet the differences of proportion
between books. These modules were placed in two rows
and distributed vertically to create compartments for
book arrangement. The space left between the overlap
of modules and the height of the bookshelf is closed
with a box for storage of other literary elements, such as
magazine clippings, brochures, catalogs, etc. The narrow
rows move forward in relation to the wider ones causing a
depth game that distinguishes and makes them stand out.
The structure of the shelf is made of lacquered MDF
and the storage boxes are produced in MDF coated with
corkrubber, a derivative of rubber and cork. This material
establishes the contrast between smooth and textured,
color and organic. As a distinctive element and detail, we
carve the Greek symbol “phi” that represents the golden
proportion, connecting the product with the concept
which leads to.

The Gray chair results from an exercise with the
purpose of provide to students some modeling knowledge
with composite materials, in this case, fiberglass. It was
asked to design a rest chair for an inside space, waiting
room or similar. We must use fiberglass, MDF or plywood
in one or more components of the chair. The entire
project was developed around the appropriateness of the
hull and structure shape to the available materials and
technologies.
From a conceptual standpoint, we tried to work in
order to achieve a hull which appeared comfortable,
however without become too obstructive. It was important
to give a sense of lightness and simplicity to the shape
of the hull. We decided to not build a closed component,
leaving the back open, suggesting only its tridimensional
shape when the chair is seen from other angles. We don’t
want also to overdraw the shape of the arms. They describe
a simple curve which supports the seat, while providing a
support for the arms and delimiting the seat zone.
The final prototype was built in molded fiberglass and
MDF, hull and structure respectively. The structure is fixed
to the hull through two chrome steel tubes, providing a
latitudinal locking which gives stability and strength to the
assembly.

The bar of a cruise is an area where passengers can
enjoy the trip and live together with each other and, as
such, this space has been designed taking into account
the different kinds of socialization. Aiming the target
of this river cruises we designed areas for groups and
couples. In addition to establishing itself as a living space,
it was intended that the bar also worked as a cultural space
where passengers could attend concerts and other live
performances. This multiplicity of purposes requires some
flexibility in configuration and distribution of equipment in
space so they had to meet certain requirements, such as
stacking.
The optimization of care services in the bar was
incorporated into the equipment in the form of a LED lights
system in the pavement that individually lights the acryllic
bodies of the tables allowing employees to understand
which are the tables answered or where customers wish
to make an order or pay the bill.
The peculiarities of the landscape and culture that
characterize the surrounding environment have been
taken as the theme for the space, where the Douro
terraced vineyards inspire the design of its equipment
which as a whole generates a sober environment, cozy
and comfortable. The harmony with outer space has been
enhanced with the introduction of a small terrace.

The best wind conditions are usually located in
remote areas far from big cities where most of the
electricity produced is required. However, there are good
wind resources in urban areas that remain unexplored.
A moving object, due to its aerodynamic and speed
produces a trail of wind with the same direction of the
object and that dissipates on its rear. The higher the speed
of the object, the higher is the wind speed generated by
its movement. In this case we are talking about air masses
generated by locomotion vehicles.
The main purpose of this concept is the use of
wind energy generated by movement of transportation
vehicles such as automobiles, motorcycles, trains, etc.,
through vertical turbines. The energy produced will
be used to supply the support infrastructures and its
associated equipment making them self-sustaining. It
was intended to create a simple modular product, which
could be installed in strategic locations, whether subway,
railways or motorways.
In this project we solely explored the implementation
of the turbines in motorway axes, on top of concrete
barriers (new jersey) that divide traffic lanes. Each barrier
has a set of turbines and is connected to contiguous
through a connect “switch”. In case of an accident
that provokes deviation of the barrier, it automatically
disconnects to avoid damage on the electrical structures
closer together. The turbines would be applied to
sections of road with lighting or support infrastructures
that require electricity such as toll roads or service areas.

The high prevalence of sedentary lifestyle, the increase
of its impact on health, mortality and related costs are the
main reason that explains the need to create a system to
encourage regular physical activity. On the other hand,
the growing human dependence on energy and scarce
natural resources require a rationalization of electricity
consumption. This concept aims to promote and sustain
healthy behaviors related to regular physical activity and
energy efficiency creating an immersive and accessible
experience to all people currently away from such habits,
regardless of their age or socioeconomic status.
The proposed system is composed of three main
elements that exchange information with each other.
They are a personal monitor (Wattch), an outdoor fitness
machine and an online platform. The stationary bike here
represents only one element of a possible family of outdoor
fitness equipment that enables electricity production.
The use of the system takes place in two different
scenarios: data visualization on the online platform and
the use of fitness machines for exercise. Wattch is the
element that provides the bridge between these two
moments and carries essential information to the proper
functioning of the whole system.
The electricity produced by the fitness machines is
accumulated in the user account who can then apply it in
exclusive advantages or humanitarian projects developed
by NGOs in developing countries. The micro production of
electricity is primarily used here for ecological awareness
and user’s motivation.

Stationary Bike
The stationary bike was chosen due to its high
utilization rates in gyms, reduced production complexity
and energy potential. Its development aimed to improve
aesthetic, functional and ergonomic aspects related to this
type of fitness equipment and an appropriate integration
of electricity production technology without obstructing its
operability.
Because it is a public equipment for green spaces was
taken a particular attention to the technical components
security and impermeability. As such, they are packaged
inside a drum divided into two halves, each one laterally
sealed by a cap. In a half are installed mechanical
components and in other half are the electrical ones,
making their access and maintenance easier. A Bluetooth
interface establishes the bike communication with Wattch
and indicates their synchronization. The saddle is height
adjustable through a fast snap trigger that allows users to
easily find the most natural and comfortable position on
the bike.

The main mechanical components are constituted
by a crankset and a magnetic brake. The crankset is
connected to a generator which multiplies its rotation
and converts it into electricity. The brake allows the user
to adjust on three levels the pedaling intensity through a
button on the drum axis.

The electrical and electronic components transform,
record and transport the electricity produced by the
generator. This energy goes to an inverter that converts
the current into alternating current (AC) so it can be
released into the grid. A controller intercepts the current
flowing in the electric circuit, checks the amount of
energy and transfers the data to a processor that records
this information and then transmits it to the user’s Wattch
through the Bluetooth interface at the handlebar middle.

Wattch
The Wattch is a virtual personal trainer which
coordinates and evaluates the user training and
communicates with fitness machines allowing to an
adequate physical and energy monitoring during exercise.
It is equipped with a pulse sensor which reads the heartbeat
by the ulnar artery in the wrist. The sensor is flexible and
can be properly adjusted depending on the individual
physic characteristics of the user and is removable for
battery replacement.
To assign a more discreet appearance to the Wattch
we chose to hide the LED display of its surface which is
now placed at the bottom of its coating. This also protects
the device against scratches and minor falls. The device
also has a micro USB input on the side that allows users to
charge the battery and transfer data to the online platform
through a computer connected to Internet.
The use mode of Wattch is divided into three main
profiles: sleep, normal and active. The sleep profile has
the goal of extend battery life and send the message of
an energy rational use. As such, when the Wattch is not in
use within 10 seconds it turns off the display. To enable it
again the user just has to press any button on the device.
The normal profile, as a conventional watch, only provides
the most basic functions such as time, date and alarm.
The active profile is selected when the user is working
out. It coordinates his training program, provides updated
information of his physical condition and electricity
generated and notifies user of the different exercises
length and the fitness machines sequence that must take.

Online Platform
The online platform is a web site that wants to, on
one hand, inform public about the Energym concept and,
secondly, support and sustain the activities performed by
users within the system. There users can search content
related to the initiative and all the data from exercise
monitoring. Beyond this informative side the platform
establishes itself as a space for social interaction and
exchange of ideas and knowledge to the user’s community
who also communicates through a forum.
The home page displays broader content of the
system, among which are the data of the energy produced
by user’s community, updated weather forecast and news.
The advantages page shows the range of exclusive
benefits that membership to Energym provides access,
resulting from the partnership with various entities.
Entering his account information on the platform
the user accesses to a personal area with information
customized to his profile and where can check his energy
balance. A database allows tracking his evolutionary path
in the system. These data also enables a professional
to evaluate the user performance and create training
programs that meet his physic and health needs.
The challenges page allows the user’s community
to select and create challenges that seek to close users
together or have the purpose of contributing to noble
social causes.

Wayfinding proposal for Architecture Faculty of
Technical University of Lisbon. Since this is a space of
student’s constant mobility, many of them foreign students,
it was deemed essential to ensure their orientation within
this academic area.
The proposed system aims to be simple and flexible, in
accordance with the surrounding architectural language
to allow a quick and effectively reading, here assisted by
the introduction of colors and symbols which distinguish
spaces and degrees. We ended up by choosing the line
as logical thread of the whole system, revealing a playful
element that arouses an animation on the walls and
extends to the pictograms design in its various bases.
