caught late in the 15-horse Norfolk, a race Ward won in 2013 withNo Nay Never and 2018 with Florida-bred Shang Shang Shang.
“It’s never easy to go over there. He’s a very talented horse, and heran a good race. We were a winneruntil five jumps before the line andthen they kind of swarmed us.Johnny put him in position to winand he just faltered the last fewjumps,” Ward said. “He came backand he ran well to win his comebackrace, so we’re ready to go.”
Lucci is named for Mike Lucci, anAll-Pro middle linebacker who playedfor the Cleveland Browns and Detroit
Lions over 12 NFL seasons and was also known for his off-fieldgenerosity. Longtime friends with principal owner Andrew Farm’sRichard Brodie, Lucci passed away last October at age 81.
“Mr. Lucci was a great humanitarian,” Ward said. “He was DickBrodie’s best buddy. We have Mr. Lucci in several win pictures thelast 10 years of training for Dick, and to have a horse named forhim after he passed win and now running in stakes races, it’s great.”
Lucci has post six and Emisael Jaramillo has the riding assignment.Augustin Stable homebred High Front will be making his stakes
debut off a six-and-a-half-length debut triumph in a five-furlongmaiden special weight on the Gulfstream turf Jan. 28. The SummerFront gelding took command early and was never threatened whilewinning in :56.16.
“The horse had touted himself going into the race. We expected
him to run well, but that didn’t mean win or win like he did. So wewere really surprised and happy with what we saw from him,”trainer Jonathan Thomas said. “He’s since trained well and he’s hada couple of really nice works. I don’t want to throw him into thedeep end of the pond, but there’s not a lot of options for him rightnow. I want to go ahead and get him back in the gate.”
High Front went unraced as a 2-year-old as the connections pa-tiently waited for him to develop. His unveiling has them anticipat-ing big things moving forward.
“He just was a horse that needed to mature and needed sometime and he certainly benefitted from it. We waited until he wasready,” Thomas said. “It’s the sort of debut where there might bebetter things to come from him, and he’s certainly trained that way.But having said that, it’s [his] second time out and it’s going to beanother learning curve for both him and I.”
High Front will be ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson from post five.Florida-bred Brit’s Candyman will have to bounced back from
an eighth-place finish in his last start against first condition,$75,000 optional claiming won by Classicstateofmind on Feb. 23.The 3-year-old son of Classic Empire has a bit of an excuse with abad start, so trainer Rohan Crichton, in partners on the colt withRick Tattoli and Rablac Racing Stable Inc.
