Healing Again on the Sabbath14:1 Now one Sabbath when Jesus went to dine at the house of a leader of the Pharisees, they were watching him closely. 14:2 There right in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy. 14:3 So Jesus asked the experts in religious law and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” 14:4 But they remained silent. So Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away.

14:5 Then he said to them, “Which of you, if you have a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” 14:6 But they could not reply to this.On Seeking Seats of Honor14:7 Then when Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. He said to them,

14:8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, because a person more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host. 14:9 So the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this man your place.’ Then, ashamed, you will begin to move to the least important place.

14:10 But when you are invited, go and take the least important place, so that when your host approaches he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up here to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who share the meal with you. 14:11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

14:12 He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, don’t invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors so you can be invited by them in return and get repaid. 14:13 But when you host an elaborate meal, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14:14 Then you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

E A disciple of Jesus needs to know the rules

of the road…and the party scene.

Jesus makes party-going an upside down event…watch your step.

Humility and generosity are once again the Big Deal.

Some payment for godly living will have to wait until Jesus returns…can I live with that?

Jesus Had A Reputation For Being A Wine Bibber--Matt 11:18-19

All kinds of folk invited Jesus to dine with them…Pharisees and Tax Collectors, too.

No wonder he knew his Ps and Qs about proper behavior for guests and hosts alike.

His social life opened plenty of doors for ministry and teaching…I’m for it!

We don’t have a record of many formal sermons, but plenty of notes from his conversations over dinner.

Guests, Beware! Those Who Exalt Themselves Will Be Humbled

It is far better to be humble rather than humiliated.

Jesus always put others first. Paul taught us to do the same.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves”. Philippians 2:3-4

A good way to get disqualified…puff up your chest, beat your own drum --Luke 18:13

And To Hosts! Rethink Your Guest List (Friends and Family need not apply)

Isn’t this going a bit too far…sounds like work to me…inviting the poor, crippled and lame!

It is the Jesus way…making his way to the low-rung people…like us.

Our arrogance is often hard to detect. But a test like this brings out our true colors.

Who did Jesus hang out with…publicans and sinners? And who judged him for that?

America Doesn’t Have A Formal Caste System… But…

We rather like our social strata…right? Those ‘below’ us probably deserve to be

shunned…must have done something wrong to be there.

The church is one place where we all stand at eye level…do we?

Jesus expects Good Samaritan behavior from all of us. “Go and do likewise”. Luke 10:37

Our Social Lives Often Carry A Built In ‘My Turn, Your Turn’ Dynamic

Jesus instructs us to give to those who cannot repay. Matthew 5:46-47

What if my good deeds to down-and-outers doesn’t pay off? Will I keep on loving the unlovely?

Maybe it is time to take a good look at my motives for social interactions.

Can I love others simply for Jesus’ sake? Who is disqualified for receiving my love and care?

Page 18: Lu 14 1-14_partytime_rules

I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

I trust him as my Lord and Savior. C
