Why should you learn anything about LTE? Well LTE is the future and trial networks are already rolled out. You can probably expect questions from collegues, friends and customers about the LTE. In this online tutorial you will learn more about the Radio Access Network used in Evolved Packet System. This is where the UEs are entering the network and the radio interface carry different services to you as an end user. It is the Radio Base Stations in the radio access network that communicates with your UE. In the following pictures we will have a look at what services you can expect as an end user and also the radio frequency management. The air interface is what the UEs use while communicating with eNodeBs. It has to be able to transport all the services both down to the UE (in downlink) and up from the UE (in uplink). The Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the radio access network in the Evolved Packet System (EPS). This is where the services starts or ends their travel through the whole network. In other words this is the place where we have to make sure that we support high enough bit rates to enable different end user services. Slide title minimum 48 pt Slide subtitle minimum 30 pt LTE Radio INterface Ericsson Internal IMS/MMTel Tomorrow Today The high bit rates and reduced latency enabled by LTE could be used to support different mobile broadband services. It could be online games, services such as audio streaming with higher quality and, faster transfer of large files. In the future we can expect to see more traditional circuit switched services like speech and sms now carried over a packet switched network. Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) is also planned to be supported in the coming releases. Even IMS/MMTel could enable similar services. However, the user rate in uplink could be somewhere between 5-50 Mbps while the user rate in downlink is between 10-100 Mbps. Six different bandwidths are specified; 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15 and, 20 MHz. This enables reuse of existing spectrums or unused spectrums. By using the lower bandwidths one could reuse spectrums that previously was used by for example GSM or cdma2000. The higher bandwidths can be used for deployment in new spectrums. This gives the operators more options when deciding their strategy for LTE deployment and hence LTE will be more attractive from that point of view. WCDMA/HSPA has a carrier bandwidth of 5 MHz. However, this bandwidth could be reduced to fit in GSM channels as well. But it still does not give the operator as many options as with LTE. It differs from the ”overview” where you also wanted to build a story of change. Here you want to select the 5-10 most important key messages from the module. Put them in a logical flow to build up to the main objective of the module. These services could be more demanding in the sense of throughput and then LTE enables higher throughput than other technologies such as HSPA or GSM. LTE also has a more flexible bandwidth that makes it more attractive for operators than other existing mobile technologies.
