After moving to Columbus from Virginia to help her brother recover from a car accident, Simone faced troubles that she never would have imagined. Once her brother recovered, Simone took on the responsibility of raising her three grandchildren after their mother was unable to care for them anymore. She searched for a job that would support the family of four, but only found part-time work at a local department store. is part-time job was not enough and she applied for food stamps to help shoulder the cost of food. Soon after applying, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) contacted Simone to let her know that she would be approved for food stamps after her job verified her income. After telling her employer she needed them to fax a form to ODJFS, she waited for weeks and still had not been approved. Simone had been regularly attending the LSS Champion Avenue Food Pantry to help supplement her food budget and keep food on the table, so she decided to ask an employee at LSS’ Ohio Benefit Bank for help. e employee contacted Simone’s employer and discussed the form needing completed. Her employer did not fully cooperate and kept giving different excuses and citing technicalities. After five different phone conversations with the LSS Ohio Benefit Bank staff member, her employer completed the form and faxed it to ODJFS. Simone was immediately approved for food stamps, which Facing the Runaround with an Advocate Inside 1 President’s Message pg. 2 LEADER THE Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio Newsletter End of Year Giving pg. 2 Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio Creating a Better World by Serving People in Need Lutheran Social Services of Northern Ohio · Lutheran Social Services of Southern Ohio helped her provide food for her family and decreased her reliance on the LSS Food Pantries. “My kids were crying for food. e kids look at you and don’t understand why they can’t have certain things,” said Simone. “e Ohio Benefit Bank at the LSS Food Pantry showed me where to turn; they helped me more than anyone else and for that I am grateful.” Racing for the Food Pantry pg. 3 The True Meaning of Christmas pg. 3 2011 Annual Meeting pg. 4 “My kids were crying for food. e kids look at you and don’t understand why they can’t have certain things.” Winter Quarter 2011
