Introduction to LS Ultracapacitor Technology

Ultracapacitor is consisted of two electrodes immersed in an electrolyte and separator prevents the charge from moving between two electrodeshaving different polarity.

LS Mtron provides optimum design of package to have the best performance and reliability.

Structure

Operating PrincipleUltracapacitor stores energy relied on electrostatic charges on opposite electrode surface of the electric double layer, which is formed between eachof the electrodes and the electrolyte. Randomly distributed ions in electrolyte move toward the electrode surface of opposite polarity under electricfield when charged. It is purely physical phenomena rather than through a chemical reaction and highly reversible process, which result in highpower, high cycle life, long shelf life, and maintenance-free product.

Ultracapacitor is unique energy storage device to offer highpower and high energy simultaneously compared withconventional electrolytic capacitor and battery. The high content of energy stored by Ultracapacitor incomparison to conventional electrolytic capacitor is came fromactivated carbon electrode material having the extremely highsurface area and the short distance of charge separationcreated by the opposite charges in the interface betweenelectrode and electrolyte.

High power, long shelf and cycle life performance ofUltracapacitor originate in the energy storage mechanismdiffering from battery. In battery, energy is stored and releasedvia chemical reaction inside electrode material that causedegradation of overall system. On the other side,Ultracapacitor uses physically charge separation phenomenabetween charge on electrode and ions in electrolyte at theinterface. Since charge and discharge process are purelyphysical and highly reversible, Ultracapacitor can releaseenergy much faster (with more power) than a battery thatrelies on slow chemical reactions and can be cycled hundredsof thousands of times without deep effect on performance.

High Energy & High Power

Ultracapacitor is an energy storage device that has different charge & discharge characteristics compared with rechargeable battery. Battery hasvoltage plateau region but Ultracapacitor shows only linear relationship with voltage during charge and discharge. The linear relationship withvoltage can change to constant voltage by simply connecting DC-DC converter. The amount of energy stored in Ultracapacitor can be easilycalculated by measuring voltage.

Energy Equation for Ultracapacitor

Different unit between Ultracapacitor(Farad) and battery(Ampere hour) make user to confuse when adopting Ultracapacitor in their system.The amount of energy stored in Ultracapacitor can be easily calculated by using following equation.

Energy (Joule) = 1/2 x Capacitance (Farad) x Voltage2 (Volt)

It can be converted from Farad for Ultracapacitor to Watt hour unit which is normally used for conventional rechargeable battery.

Energy (Watt hour) = Energy (Joule) / 3600 (sec)

LS Mtron recommends to operate Ultracapacitor from maximum voltage to half voltage and release 3/4 of total energy.
