Recom- mended only for expert skiers with specific equipment and knowledge ofthe area. Big-mountain skiing: Expert-only skiing, which can be fast and dangerous. Usually done in the backcountry. Brazilian: A technique in which the tips of the skis are waxed to do tricks. Freeskiing: The newest style of skiing, free of "race courses, mo- guls and any kind of restrictions." Glades: Skiingbetrreen the trees in the forest. Tkerkin merkin: A neur trick in which the skier does "two 360-degree turns on a rail," similar to snowboarding or skateboarding. TERMS FOR FUN Poaching: The act ofducking ropes and sneaking past ski patrol or "breaking the rules" in search of fresh snow. Texas Gore-Tex: Someone who wears jeans on the slopes. Definitely a skiing faux pas. Touques and dogiers: Touque being the Canadian term for hat, this refers to "ski bums or hippies walking around in ski hats walking your dog." Yard sale: After a co[ision or fall, when "all ofyour gear flies off and it looks like a yard sale." TERM OF RESPECT Shredder: 'Any great or really skilled skier," porter says.
