Art Deco turned mundane objects into graceful, sensual works of art, with a nod towards the opulent and extreme. Art Deco sought to build upon the elements of Mod-ern Art movements by focusing on the principal object and removing the extrane-ous elements found in the Victorian era and in Art Nouveau. The concept of “form following function” and the technological advances of the early 20th century played a very important role in defining the direction of Art Deco. Popular images included styl-ized people, svelte animals, tall buildings, sleek vehicles and ex-otic scenes. Art Deco typographic designers were also inspired by these diverse themes. Ed Rogers (1925-2002) was an un-likely and uninten-tional art figure. His art career began in 1981 when he met David Greenberger, the creator of The Duplex Planet, an ongoing project that introduces us to people who are old or in decline. As a resident of the Duplex Nursing home, Ed became a contributor to The Duplex Planet magazine. David in-cluded his drawings in many issues. Ed’s dynamic lettering was a primary focus of nearly all his drawings. Later, Ed was commissioned to create lettering for R.E.M. as well as releases by other musicians. Since 1994, Ed’s drawings have been featured in a traveling exhibi-tion of outsider art.

Think of Ga-ramouche as Gar-amond’s drunken cousin. This font replicates a long lost document ravaged by time and the elements (with a little sloppy printing for good measure). P22 type foundry presents a font set created in con-junction with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s exhibition of Victorian-era French artist James Tissot. The fonts developed for the P22 Victorian set are based on histor-ic typefaces dating from the late 19th century. Victorian Gothic was based on a type style called ‘Atlanta’, a simple, expanded width, quirky, yet elegant face similar to ‘Copperplate’. Victorian Swash was inspired by the willowy, delicate face ‘Columbian’, which has also been known in recent years as ‘Glorietta’. The P22 version includes ‘snap-on’ flourishes.
