WHY A SKINCARE BUSINESS?

• Skincare attracts new IBOs and customers to your business. New IBOs tell us they want products that

improve appearance, are fun and easy to talk about – ARTISTRY® skincare fits this profile perfectly.

• Skincare is a significant business. ARTISTRY is a $1.4 billion brand. Did you know: Every year, over 5

million customers buy an ARTISTRY product? That’s more than one product sold every second.*

• Skincare is a relationship builder. Skincare has the ability to build long term relationships because

there are opportunities for repeat contact. Follow-up is natural since you can estimate the use-up rate

and contact the customers before their product is finished.

• Skincare creates easy transitions to makeup and from makeup. Discussing skincare can lead directly

to recommendation for ARTISTRY makeup and vice versa.

• Skincare connects customers to the ARTISTRY brand. If customers look good, they remember the

products and the IBO who helped them to look their best. This is a great way to build trust and loyal

customers.

• Skincare is an effective conversation starter. Most women love to talk about their skin, skincare

products or the latest in innovative skincare. Why shouldn’t they get them from you? For this reason it

is essential to know your ARTISTRY products and use the ARTISTRY products.

• Skincare builds productivity and retention. Because skincare helps increase an individual’s

confidence, they want to continue using the products. This leads to repeat business. Skincare helps

create loyalty because of the visible results.

• Skincare highlights Amway® as a trustworthy company and an innovator in the market place.

• For all of these reasons, we ensure that ARTISTRY skincare is an area of your Amway business that

is always evolving, from new products to new technologies, we create on-going opportunities for

conversation.

And for all of these reasons, we have introduced the ARTISTRY Signature Solutions Program. ARTISTRY Signature Solutions is a skin transformation program for your skin and your business. Signature Solutions targets IBOs who love beauty and want to grow a successful and sustainable beauty consultancy business. It is for women of all ages who are concerned with their appearance and want to look younger / better / more beautiful and feel more confident.

The Signature Solutions Program is supported by tools and resources. A major success of the Signature Solutions Program is the ARTISTRY Skin Analyzer. This amazing skin diagnostic tool measures 8 different tests to determine the skin’s condition and recommends ARTISTRY skincare solutions to match the concerns diagnosed. We will be learning about the ARTISTRY Skin Analyzer over the next 5 weeks and how to successfully consult using this amazing tool.

To make consulting easier, we have introduced Skincare Solution Bundles. Each of the Skincare Solution

bundles have been expertly put together and supported by science to provide clinical results.

WHY DO WE NEED SKINCARE?

Your skin looks and feels better when using the right skincare products – products that suit your skin.

The skin is the largest organ of the body. It is also an external organ so it doesn’t just hold everything

together, it has many other functions such as protection, to regulate temperature, sensation, immunity

and excretion, just to name the basics.

When we look at someone, the face is often the first place we look and we can set a first impression just

by the appearance of our skin – does it look prematurely aged, lines and wrinkles, spots and pimples or

sun damaged?

If we want our skin to look better at any age we need to start thinking about what we are putting on our

skin to look after it. Therefore, depending on your age and skin concerns, you will need to choose a

skincare routine to look after your skin.

Before we can recommend the right skincare, it is important to have an understanding of how the skin

functions.

AN INTRODUCTION TO SKINCARE

ARTISTRY® Skincare goes beyond basic skincare; we help people address their skin concerns. The

goal: to help any skin function more like healthy, normal-looking skin. As an IBO, it may be helpful for

you to know a few key facts about skin and how it functions. Although you may never need to explain

this to a customer, this information will give you more insight into how and where ARTISTRY Signature

Skincare products are targeted in the skin—and why the ARTISTRY brand has created a variety of

skincare collections that address different concerns.

The Epidermis

The Epidermis is the protective outermost layer of the skin.

Function: about as thick as a sheet of paper (~0.1 mm) in most parts, the epidermis has several layers of cells that are constantly flaking off and being renewed, thereby helping cuts and scrapes heal quickly. The main cells of the Epidermis are Keratinocytes, which produce keratin, a tough protein that is a basic component of hair, skin and nails that helps create an intact, waterproof barrier.

The surface of the Epidermis is called the Stratum Corneum. It functions as a barrier, keeping environmental pollutants out. It also prevents water from evaporating from skin by holding in surface moisture, keeping skin looking and feeling comfortable and smooth. The barrier is made of dead skin cells that have flattened out in layers; these cells are surrounded by a mix of lipids and natural moisturising factors that act like mortar in a brick wall.

The cells in the Epidermis are formed at the Basal Cell Layer, where they also receive pigment from Melanocytes. Melanocytes produce melanin – the pigment in the cell that give them their colour. This pigment is part of the skin’s natural protection from environmental aggressors (especially the UV radiation from the sun).

INTRODUCTION TO SKIN PHYSIOLOGY

The Dermis

The Dermis, the second, deeper layer of skin, contains structures, such as the Sweat Glands and Sebaceous Glands, Hair Follicles and Blood Vessels. It also gives skin stretch, resilience and support, since it is made up of a webbed network of microscopic cables called Collagen and Elastin.

Collagen

Proteins that make up a supporting structure in the Dermis, responsible for the strength and resilience of skin.

Elastin

Connective fibres in the Dermis that are flexible and elastic, helping further support the skin’s structure.

When not functioning properly: as we age and are exposed to environmental aggressors, Collagen and Elastin production decreases while the existing Collagen and Elastin become damaged resulting in less support for the skin. Visually we begin to see lines, wrinkles and sagging.

The Sub-Dermis

The Sub-Dermis is also referred to as the Hypodermis. This is the layer of tissue directly underneath the Dermis. The Sub-Dermis is mainly composed of loose connective tissue and adipose tissue. The functions of the Sub-Dermis include insulation, the storage of energy and aids in anchoring of the skin. This Sub-Dermis layer cushions the underlying body for extra protection against trauma.

WHAT IS MITOCHONDRIA?

Mitochondria is found in every living cell throughout the body, these tiny cellular organelles provide the energy needed for the skin to function optimally. Like ‘batteries’, Mitochondria provide up to 90% of the energy that the cells need to function. When Mitochondria become damaged, their energy production is diminished and all cellular functions are affected.

When not functioning properly: when Mitochondria become damaged or diminish their energy production, all functions of the cell are affected, including its ability to repair damage.

ARTISTRY® Signature Skincare supports healthy Mitochondrial function. ARTISTRY Supreme LX® collection support the skin’s natural ability to energise itself.

Women have skin concerns at every age. Here are some concerns experienced by the timeline.

Teens & 20s

Fighting acne, oiliness and dehydration are the main concerns in your teens and continuing into our 20’s. Choose treatments that thoroughly and gently clean the skin, intensely hydrating creams, and UV protection to ward off damage that will lead to wrinkles and dark spots later.

30s

The first fine lines and wrinkles and uneven skin tone are the main concern in your 30s. Choose treatments that boost Collagen and Elastin, plus help to normalise the production of Melanin (which causes the dark spots.) Continue use of daily SPF to defend skin from more damage.

40s

Dark spots and wrinkles continue to develop and skin becomes drier in your 40s. Choose skincare that helps even out skin tone and boosts skin ability to fight wrinkles. Plus, select creamier, more hydrating formulas of cleansers and moisturisers. And continue using SPF to protect skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

50s

Expression lines, wrinkled surface texture, loss of elasticity and possible yellowing of skin are main concerns in your 50s. Choose products that help skin fight deeper wrinkles and fight discolouration with brightening treatments. Resurfacing products can help it regain its smooth texture. Hormonal changes can mean dehydration, so choose more emollient, creamy formulas of cleansers and moisturisers. It is never too late to wear SPF; it helps skin use less energy to prevent damage and more energy on repairing it.

60s +

Skin functions have slowed in your 60s and beyond, meaning drier, thinner skin. Choose formulas that include mild exfoliation, and richer creams to hydrate skin. Look for formulas that contain optics to give instant radiance and line-smoothing effects. Plus, with more leisure time comes more sun exposure, so remember to wear SPF every day.

SKIN TYPES VS SKIN CONDITIONS

Skin Type is how dry or oily skin is without a moisturiser. Skin type helps determine the formula of cleanser and moisturiser the customer prefers. (For example, someone with dry skin may enjoy a heavier feeling cream than someone with oily skin.)

Skin Conditions are based on the way skin looks and acts. The names of skin concerns describe how the skin differs from normal skin.

WHAT CAUSES DRY VS DEHYDRATED SKIN?

To many people, dehydration and dry skin can seem like the same thing, because they both cause skin to look and feel the same way:

• FEELS: Tight, taut, uncomfortable, itchy, may be easily irritated.

• LOOKS: Dull, lackluster, rough; may be flaky and even red.

Dry skin lacks vital oils in the skin. The Sebaceous Glands are not producing enough oil.

Dehydration is a lack of water in the skin. It can be a temporary condition or a lifelong problem—but it’s not the same as dry skin.

WHAT CAUSES LARGE PORES?

Ageing and excess oil production are the two main causes of large pores, and can affect both men and women of all ages. Both causes are affected by many internal and external factors, including genetics, hormonal fluctuations, psychological stress, and environmental exposure. As we age the pore walls weaken resulting in an open pore appearance.

Think of it this way:

All skin types can benefit from extra hydration.

Even oily skin can experience dehydration, which is a lack of water, not oil.

Only dry skin will benefit from extra oil.

Dehydrated skin can lead to dry skin.

9ARTISTRY STARTUP - MODULE 1

WHAT CAUSES DISCOLOURATION AND DARK SPOTS?

Skin cells get their colour from specialised cells called Melanocytes, located in the Basal Cell Layer, at the lower level of the Epidermis. The Melanocyte produces pigment, called Melanin. UV light stimulates the Melanocytes as part of skin’s natural defence mechanism against excess UV exposure. The Melanin protects the skin cell’s nucleus by reflecting and absorbing harmful UV light, acting as our body’s sunscreen to help prevent DNA damage.

UV exposure and irritation can trigger boosts in production of Melanin, causing skin to get darker in response. A suntan is an example of this reaction. But when there is chronic UV damage, Melanocytes can get ‘stuck’ overproducing Melanin. This results in the discolouration seen in age spots.

Some discolouration can be caused by hormonal factors such as pregnancy and the oral contraceptive. Often this type of discolouration fades when hormones regulate, however it is still advisable not to expose the skin to excessive UV without SPF protection.

WHAT CAUSES FINE LINES AND WRINKLES?

With age and accumulated UV and environmental damage, collagen and elastin breaks down in the Dermis. This lack of support shows up as fine lines and wrinkles on the surface of the skin.

Personal daily choices that can accelerate ageing of the skin include:

• Smoking

• Nutrient deficiency

• Caffeine

• Alcohol

• Lack of exercise

• Lack of, or incorrect, skincare

• Weather exposure

• Stress

• Lack of sleep

WHAT CAUSES SAGGING?

With increased age and accumulated UV and environmental damage, Collagen and Elastin become stiff and weak, therefore less able to bounce back into shape. In addition to lines and wrinkles, surface skin loses its natural contours and appears to sag.

Page 10: Love BEAUTY? - amway.co.nz Solutions... · • Skincare highlights Amway® as a trustworthy company and an innovator in the market place. • For all of these reasons, ... AN INTRODUCTION

10ARTISTRY STARTUP - MODULE 1

WHAT CAUSES SKIN SENSITIVITY?

Sensitive skin is skin which reacts to products, ingredients or manual manipulation. The reaction can be either painless or uncomfortable—stinging, itching or burning skin may only show a slight reddening or exhibit more severe reactions—such as blotchiness, rashes, and flaking.

People with on-going sensitive skin may have a weaker moisture barrier, making their skin vulnerable to many kinds of skin reactions. Occasional sensitivity can also occur when skin’s moisture barrier is temporarily compromised. This can be caused by stress, environmental changes such as extreme exposure to UV (including sunburn) or dry conditions like airline traveling, or manual exfoliation (peels, scrubs and shaving).

HOW IS THE SKIN AROUND THE EYE AREA DIFFERENT?

It is essential to use products specifically created for the needs of the skin around the eye area.

• The skin around the eye area is more delicate.

• 10 times thinner than the face.

• Does not contain oil glands to keep the skin moist. So the protective barrier is thinner, morefragile and weaker. This allows more irritants to enter the skin and accelerate ageing.

• The skin around eyes has less structural support—less collagen and elastin to help it bounceback into shape also the eye area’s constant activity makes it more prone to lines, wrinkles andeventually sagging.

• Ages more rapidly; more prone to intrinsic ageing.

• Eye area has less subcutaneous fat and cushioning, resulting in lines and sagging.

What is Mitochondria and why it is important to your skin?

Skin ageing is influenced by several factors including genetics, environmental exposure, hormonal changes and metabolic processes. In humans, structural and functional changes attributable to ageing are more visibly evident in the skin than in any other organ.

The three major factors that cause ageing are: extrinsic factors, intrinsic factors and lifestyle choices.
