What Is Lockout/Tagout?Lockout/Tagout is an important safety procedure that involves shutting off the power to industrial machines or equipment during maintenance or repair.

The procedure protects employees from risks caused by power sources. Used properly in conjunction with a well-planned lockout process, the safety padlock helps ensure that employees will not inadvertently activate a piece of equipment while someone else is working on it.

Potential Hazards In The Workplace

1. Electricity

2. Hydraulic Pressure

3. Compressed Air

4. Gas

5. Steam

6. Fluids

Who Needs Lockout/Tagout? Thousands of accidents occur while repairing or servicing equipment. Most of those accidents are due to energy sources that have not been isolated. Therefore, identification of the equipment’s potential hazard is essential for a successful safety prevention procedure.

All employers have a duty of care to provide their employees and contractors with a safe working environment. Where there is moving machinery and plant items in operation an effective Lockout/Tagout program is a vital component.

Implementing a lockout system is a crucial measure in protecting employee and contractor safety whilst undertaking maintenance.

When implementing a lockout/tagout system you need to take into account your current processes and consider what your workplace may look like in 1, 3 and 5 years time.

Below are some helpful tips you should consider when implementing a lockout/tagout system.

• Howmanyemployeesdoyouhaveonsite? The number of employees on site will determine if you need a registered or unregistered lockout system. Registered lockout systems are recommended for large end users or end users concerned about key duplications. Unregistered systems are recommended for small-medium end users. Orders will be supplied with randomly picked padlocks from over 100,000 key codes available.

• Howmanyemployeeswillrequiremorethanonesafetypadlock? Employees that require more than one padlock should be issued with keyed alike padlocks. That way they will only have to carry a single key to open their safety padlocks.

• Howwillyouquicklyidentifywhoownseachsafetypadlock? Padlock identification is extremely important in a lockout/tagout system as it quickly identifies the identity of the employee that applied the lockout device. Master Lock safety padlocks can be laser engraved on up to 4 sides, so consider laser engraving your safety padlocks with either an employee name or identification number. You can also engrave company logos to reduce lock pilferage.

• Whosuppliescontractorswiththeirsafetypadlocks? It is important to ensure contractor safety as well as the safety of your own employees. For that reason it is a good idea to hire/loan safety padlocks to contractors as they come onsite. Before undertaking any work, contractors should be trained on that sites lockout/tagout system. It is a good idea to use a different coloured padlock to help identify a contractor.

• Whatdoyouneedtoisolate? Not all energy sources can be isolated by applying a safety padlock directly onto the piece of equipment. Therefore you may require a range of lockout accessories such as circuit breaker lockouts, valve lockouts and multipoint lockouts to ensure the isolation is performed correctly.

• Donumerousemployeesworkonthesamepieceofequipment? If numerous employees work on the same piece of equipment you will need to purchase safety lockout hasps. These allow multiple workers to apply their own safety padlock. Alternatively you could use a group lock box. With a group lock box, an authorized isolator will perform the machine/plant isolations and then place the key to the isolation padlocks inside the lock box. Once he/she has done this, they will apply their safety padlock (usually green) to the group lock box, and then each worker will apply their own red safety padlock to the group lock box.

• Areallyourisolationpointslabeled? All isolation points should be uniquely labeled to ensure that the correct piece of equipment is isolated.

1. Identify Isolation Area Identify the energy sources to be isolated and check that the equipment being repaired/serviced can be isolated with a safety padlock or lockout device.

2. ApplySafetyDevices Apply your safety padlocks and lockout devices. If several employees are working on the same piece of equipment ensure each individual places their own safety padlock on the machinery.

3. Confirm No Residual Energy Remains Once machine has been isolated, make sure that no residual energy remains, as even if energy is isolated it can still be very dangerous.

4. Protect Prior to Reactivating Machinery Prior to removing all safety padlocks make sure that all forms of protection have been put in place, maintenance has been completed and all employees are at their posts prior to reactivating machinery.

Laser Engraving• Laser engraving is the most efficient method of permanently marking your safety padlocks. By permanently marking your safety padlocks you will prevent padlock theft and save time searching for the right employee or key.

Master Lock has an engraving cell in Australia, so safety padlocks can now be laser engraved within 5 working days.

For more information and to obtain laser engraving forms, please contact your Protector Alsafe representative.

(1) Determine the number of employees that you will want to use this system: Take into account future growth at your facility. Each employee should have a unique key code that is theirs alone.

(2) Choose one of the following Safety Keying Systems

a. Keyed Different

b. Keyed Alike

c. Master Keyed

(3) Determine how many employees will need to get more than one safety padlock for lockout. Those employees should get KA (keyed alike) padlocks.

REMEMBER:1EMPLOYEE–1SAFETYPADLOCK–1KEY

kEy SySTEmS

Safety padlocks must indicate the identity of the employee applying the device. All Master Lock Zenex™ safety padlocks are supplied with identification labels.

pAdLOCk CuSTOmISATION & IdENTIFICATION

kEy CHArTINg & SITE rEgISTrATION

To ensure there is no unwanted duplications of keys, Master Lock recommends all safety padlocks are 1 employee – 1 padlock – 1 key.

As the number of locks increase, so does the complexity of tracking keys and Master Lock is the expert at managing key changes and can keep a complete record of the progressive key codes assigned and manufactured for your site.

Key charting is recommended for large end users or end users concerned about key code duplication. With a key charted safety lockout system, orders will be registered with the Master Lock Key Charting System and will be assigned key codes to avoid the danger of key duplications. Locks are built ex-factory.

Furthermore Master Lock Safety Series Padlocks have a sealed keying system which ensures your safety lockout system stays pure by preventing haphazard rekeying and the accidental introduction of new codes.

Master Lock Safety Series padlocks are all standard key retaining which ensures that padlocks are not accidentally left unlocked. For more information please contact your Protector Alsafe representative.

Lockout Stations and padlock racks provide a durable central location for storing necessary lockout/tagout equipment. To ensure long life of your safety padlocks Master Lock recommends the following padlock maintenance.

Over time, dust, particles and chemicals in the air settle on and in the padlock. They can create friction inside the precision locking and key components and impede opening and closing of the padlock.

• Annual cleaning is recommended. In particularly dusty or corrosive environments clean every three months.

• Clean the padlock. Use pressurised air to blow out dust.

• Apply a greaseless “DRY” lubricant such as Selley’s Eze-Glide.

• A very light spray of lubricant is recommended. Do not apply a heavy coat. Less is better. Insert key, open and close padlock several times to distribute lubricant. Wipe excess off key.

• NEVER use an oil or dry graphite lubricant. Oil attracts dust. Oil can also interfere with the movement of the pins in the locking mechanism. Graphite is often applied in excess, which then interferes with part movement. ONLY use a “DRY” lubricant for best results.

• Regular cleaning and lubrication of your safety padlock will ensure years of long life.

• Tagout is a crucial and essential step in a safety procedure.

• Tagout requires indication that an operation is being done, identifying that an employee is servicing equipment and identifying the affected equipment.

• Each operation (maintenance, repair, cleaning, emptying) must be clearly tagged out, seen and understood quickly and easily.

• Safety tags are exposed to harsh environments, therefore, those tagout devices must be resistant, long lasting and reusable.

• Safety tags from Master Lock are made from high resistance material offering temperature resistance, chemical agent resistance, oil, humidity and dust.

Guardian Extreme Tags• Guardian Extreme tags are the toughest tags. Constructed from industrial grade polypropylene the graphics are permanently fused into the polypropylene to ensure your safety message is vibrant and clear for years to come.

• The tags withstand high humidity, UV radiation, harsh chemicals, frequent wash downs and extreme temperatures.

• Simply write on tags with a permanent marker and then wipe-off with isopropyl alcohol or a citrus based stain remover.
