in the forestA little bit of magic

AUTUMN in this region is just out-of-control-super-gorgeous. Crunchy leaves in flame colours, warm clothes, frosty morns and open fires. It’s like we’re living in a great big Autumn picture postcard cliché. And It. Is. Sweet. Autumn also brings with it a favourite seasonal visitor to the region. In their thousands. All manner, shapes, sizes and colours of fungi. From perfectly round circles of fairy ring toadstools to the classic red-with-white-spots fairy toadstool, delicious field mushrooms, even gourmet truffles, Central Victoria is home to an amazing variety of fungi species. But before you go foraging for a basket of forest-fresh-mushies to sauté and serve up with eggs on toast, best you learn what you can and can’t pick around these parts. As well as some wonderful edible varieties, the region is also a prime area for the particularly nasty species, the Death Cap (Amanita phalloides). This toxic mushroom looks very similar to several edible mushroom varieties, however the Death Cap is responsible for more fungal poisoning fatalities worldwide than any other species. (Including two recent tragic fatalities in Canberra.) The best way to discover what’s on the menu and what’s not, is to be guided by an expert. Photographer and fungi expert Alison Pouliot runs fascinating fungi workshops throughout the region in Autumn, introducing participants to the incredible diversity and curiosities of the fungi kingdom. Alison’s workshops address identification, ecology, history and include a field trip to nearby forests to search for what has popped up this week. Participants are advised to wear weather appropriate clothing. (Here’s the heads up… It’s usually wet). The first workshop is The Fungi, An Introduction to a Curious Kingdom. To be held Saturday, April 14. The second workshop is The Bizarre and the Beautiful, A Deeper Exploration of a Curious Kingdom, to be held Sunday, April 15. Both sessions will be held at Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (High Street). Cost for each session: $70. More info call Trentham Neighbourhood Centre: 5424 1354, or visit: ourneighbourhood.org.au, or: alisonpouliot.com.

Anderson’s Mill Festivalget your gluten on

Permaculturefrom wasteland to oasisTHE first Sunday of each month (April 1 this month) you can learn how to become just that bit greener by taking a tour of one of Australia’s best documented and well known permaculture demonstration sites, Melliodora (16 Fourteenth St, Hepburn Springs). Not familiar with permaculture? Well, your tour guide at Melliodora, David Holmgren, can help… as he, and Bill Mollison, originally coined the word in the ‘70s to describe “an integrated, evolving system of perennial or self-perpetuating plant and animal species useful to man”. Melliodora is a mudbrick passive solar house, complete with mixed food gardens, orchards, dams and livestock, it’s even bushfire resistant. The creek revegetation demonstrates how permaculture can help restore and improve land. Incredible to think Melliodora was a blackberry covered wasteland in the ‘80s before the Holmgrens rescued it. Info: holmgren.com.au, bookings: 5348 3636 or email: [email protected].

ANDERSON’S Mill is a pretty impressive five storey bluestone flour mill built 150 years ago at Smeaton. The Anderson family milled flour and oats for about 100 years before grain farming moved to other regions. In the 1970s, the Mill became one of the first buildings added to the Historic Buildings register. And after a whole lot of elbow grease the Mill has been restored and each year celebrates the fact it’s still standing at its very own festival. The Anderson’s Mill Festival will be held Sunday, April 1, 10am – 5pm. Enjoy fine local produce, wines and gourmet goodies, live entertainment, craft stalls and tours. Entry: $12 adults, $5 kids and $30 family. If you miss the festival, Mill tours are run on the first Sunday of each month 12 – 4pm. For more information: andersonsmillfest.org.au or call: 0417 537 335.

YOU’D better believe it - Christa Hughes is comin’ to town. Christa’s eclectic resume (La Clique, Circus Oz, Machine Gun Fellatio), has seen her perform in the worlds’ biggest cities to all manner of audiences, from Broadway, to Shanghai, and now she’s bringing her Beer Drinking Woman show direct from Melbourne’s Spiegeltent to Lyonville Hall (Bremner Ave, Lyonville) for one show only; Sunday April 1, 7:30pm. Surprise! Beer Drinking Woman is all about drinking, and accompanied by pianist Leonie Cohen, and a bevvy or two, Christa delivers her booze laden covers (think everyone from Sinatra to Tom Waits) with a vampy vixen verve, a nod to 1920s cabaret, and delivers them all with delicious wit. Cheers to that. Tickets are $20 from Can’t Think Straight (41 Vincent Street, Daylesford) For more info contact Kareena Hodgson: 0410 514 972.

winner takes allArt vs Craft

Make peace with yourselfat EasterEASTER is synonymous with healthy food and relaxation. All over the world, people take time out to get back in touch with their inner selves. Sorry, what’s that? Chocolate? No, no… here in Hepburn Springs, we know no such word… our bodies are temples and we only celebrate the healthy...Okay… what we meant to write, was… that you could choose this option at the Yoga Retreat at Hepburn Retreat Centre (9 Lone Pine Avenue, Hepburn Springs) Friday April 6 untill Monday April 9, if you so desire. A weekend of sumptuous vegetarian food, meditation and yoga, optional extras of massage, a soak at the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa, tarot reading and astrological charts, led by inspiring Yogi Michelle Jayne from Yoga Ground. The Argushot off the pressPEPPERS Mineral Springs Retreat (124 Main Road Hepburn Springs) has had more than just a lick of paint in its latest metamorphosis. The transformation brings with it a superb new restaurant. The Argus Dining Room will be one of Victoria’s most inspired fine dining experiences. Under the watchful eye (of certain magicians) Frank Moylan and Melissa Macfarlane, (think Farmers’ Arms Daylesford, The Royal George Kyneton, and The Crimean North Melbourne). The Argus opens its doors March 28, with Ryan Sessions in the kitchen, and his all new team. Ryan hails from Port Fairy’s two-hatted Merrijig Inn and believes in local produce, (the new vegetable gardens are being planted out the back as this wee mag heads to print!) The beef is aging, the wine chilling, the linen starched, glasses polished. Best make your reservation before the word gets out! Dinner Wednesday till Sunday and Sunday lunch. Rogainingall for glory. And chocolateAHHH Daylesford, a blissful, relaxing paradise. Day spas, cosy open fires, daytime siestas under alpaca throws. A heavenly place in Autumn for lovers of relaxation and serious downtime. Daylesford is all this and more… unless of course, you are a Rogainer.Rogaining (for those uninitiated) is a hybrid of marathon, orienteering and the gentle art of bush bashing… on foot. For hours on end. For no financial gain. No alpaca throws in sight. The Victorian Rogaining Association is holding two x 6 hour Rubys and Basalt Rogaine events just out of Daylesford, Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15. 10am – 4pm each day. The point of Rogaining is to navigate your way through an open air course, with a map and compass, locating and checking off various checkpoints along the way. (The organisers are tricky folk and like to hide them too, it ain’t as easy as it sounds!) Once you’ve found them all, the winner is presented with chocolate. (Nice.) And you get to relax at the Hash House. (Well, a little relaxation is mandatory, it is Daylesford after all!) After six hours of mind bending map reading, and flat out cross country running, the Hash House delivers the goods with a BBQ, cheese toasties, stews, soups, cakes, and drinks. Now as much as we love the great outdoors, the publishers of this (somewhat appropriately named) magazine, have been known to take the wrong turn down a one way path, following a GPS, (true story). So rest assured you won’t find us traipsing through the bush with said compass, oh no. We have word that the local rescue chopper crew and associated dog squads would be most displeased with us if we attempted this event, so we’ll sit this one out thanks, (despite the lure of chocolate and toasted cheese sangas). But for the more adventurous of you… GO FOR IT! (Just remember to book a day spa and massage afterwards!) More info, registrations and other Victorian Rogaining Association events are online at: vra.rogaine.asn.au or call: Phil Giddings on 98362353, or Ken Dowling on 53483792.

Oooer!nice buns indeedIT’S a hot debate. Which Hot Cross Bun gets the tick of approval, and which one gets a (Family Feud style bow-boow) cross this time of year. Let us weigh in to the debate and introduce you, (for the sadly unacquainted), to RedBeard Historic Bakery’s Organic Wood-fired Hot X Bun. This award winning Easter treat (Best Hot Cross Bun, Herald Sun 2011), is hand crafted by those clever bakers at RedBeard (38A High Street Trentham). They don’t believe in big chunks of orange peel, (bless ‘em). Instead, there’s a subtle citrus hit muddled with spice and organic, locally sourced dried fruit, and let’s just say… served warm with butter… hot damn girlfriend!! Hot X Buns are $3 each or $14 for ½ doz at RedBeard, selected Farmers’ Markets, or the weekly Daylesford Sunday Market, (Daylesford Train Station, 18 Raglan Street) till the end of Easter.

Running rocks!so, run the rock!

Body Art Championshipsnot exactly ‘still’ lifeEVERY kid under six has had either an (a) Spiderman, or (b) Butterfly painted on their face at some point in their lives. At the Australian Body Art Awards it is highly doubtful you’ll see a Spiderman in competition, instead, you can expect jaw droppingly elaborate art on human canvasses painted by highly skilled body artists from around the country. The Australian Body Art and The Face and Body Painting Convention will be held at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20. Performances and awards will be held Friday and Saturday nights, and classes with Australian and international face and body artists will be held throughout the week. Tickets and more info at: australianbodyartawards.com.au or contact Maria Mormile on: 0407 627 427.

AUSTRALIA’S other famous rock (the one of the hanging variety) permits folk to not only climb to the summit, but on occasion, race your way there! Hanging Rock (South Rock Road, Woodend) will co-host ‘Run the Rock’ with the Cancer Council Victoria on Saturday, April 21. With a lovely choice of distance: 17.5 kilometre, 10 kilometre, five kilometre run/walk and a two kilometre kids run - the event boasts quiet country roads, rural picturesque backdrops and bush trails, with scenic views of Mt Macedon thrown in for good measure and… with the exception of the kids run, there is a bonus lap around the base! Just what you’ll need to run off the Easter and school holiday fare! More info: starttofinish.com.au or phone: 9285 0600

Go and get locavored!subtitle: eat more beetrootHOW hard can it be to connect growers and producers to consumers? Seems like a basic supply and demand scenario. Except, simple it is anything but... Just at the end of last month Dick Smith gave away $100000 of tinned beetroot that he bought from a NSW farmer who could not sell it. This poor farmer was about to plough it back into the earth as he couldn’t compete with the influx of cheaper overseas imports. Recently Aussie supermarkets made statements that Australians will always buy cheaper produce over anything from local farmers… well, let’s not generalise folks… but perhaps those supermarket peeps need to venture on down to the Daylesford region. Part time Hepburn resident Ewan McEoin, from the Locavore Edition, is doing his bit to stop the madness and has cleverly published the first comprehensive guide to Victoria’s regional produce and the people that grow, make and sell it. Aptly titled: ‘The Field Guide to Victorian Produce’ the aim is simple: reconnect producers and consumers, (shazzam!) And to bring transparency, authenticity and provenance to the foreground by sharing the stories of over 300 Victorian growers, producers and providers. Ewan hopes by sharing these stories much needed connectivity will be built in this sector of community, which can only be a good thing, right?Of course Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges features as does interviews from well known Victorian chefs in: Alla Wolf-Tasker, Stefanie Alexander, Dan Hunter, Michael Ryan, Andrew McConnell and Stefano Di Pieri to name a few. Pick up a copy and do yourself and our lovely Victorian farmers a favour… Local stockists are: Cliffy’s, Wombat Hill House and Lake House or jump online to order: locavored.com, or call Ewan on: 0448 446 044 for more info. dp

Kynetonold wares, eclectic art & indulgence

Not to be outshone by its historically beautiful, mineral spring rich and gastronomically outstanding country sisters, Kyneton has come out firing in recent years and is stunning visitors with everything from daffodils to dessert. Indulge in Kyneton’s eclectic shopping and to-die-for dining.

whereJust off the Calder Freeway, Kyneton shines. Pack an appetite and head to Piper Street where there’s reputedly more hatted restaurants on this little street, than in any other in regional Australia.

La Vendemmia!salute!

all aboard the working bee!Loco for Locos?

NOTHING wrong with a bit of train love. The Daylesford Spa Country Railway, (operating out of the historic Daylesford Train Station, 18 Raglan Street), is run on a little bit of hard work, and a whole lot of loco love. The lovingly restored tourist trains that run weekly from Daylesford’s Sunday Market through the bush to Musk, are all maintained, cleaned, driven, and operated by volunteers, and all monies raised from ticket sales go back to restoring the trains, tracks and grounds. Ahh they’re a passionate bunch the volunteers at DSCR, so if you’re handy with maintenance-y stuff, and mad about trains, the team would love you to volunteer your time at the next Way and Works Working Bee, Saturday, April 21, from 10am. For more information go to: dscr.com.au or contact Ian Fell: (A/H) 9807 1247.

IT takes an almighty effort to make a good bottle of wine. And when you think of what those precious bunches on the vine have to contend with before they make it to the bottle, (surviving bugs, frost, birds, hail, wind, storms and wildlife – phew!) once they’re safely picked it’s time to celebrate! La Vendemmia is the traditional Italian celebration of the grape harvest. Ellender Estate (260 Green Gully Road Glenlyon) is hosting their harvest celebration Sunday, April 22, 12:30pm. Join them at the long tables at L’Osteria for regional food and wine with friends. You will also be given the opportunity to sample the juice and fermenting wine, as villagers have traditionally done at harvest for eons. Tickets are $80. More information and bookings: ellenderwines.com.au or phone: 5348 7785.

Upholding the Lorein Daylesford

at maison du jourPlats du jour

BACK in ye olde days herbs were blended using ancient recipes to create potent medicines and tonics. Roger McLean, founder of Herbal Lore Liqueurs (Lot 2, Railway Cres. Daylesford) has perfected the modern day herbal tonic with his range of fine liqueurs, specialty ports, liqueur chocolates and liqueur fruits. His range blends all manner of organic hand picked Australian herbs, to create more than just an incredible depth of flavour. Each of his hand crafted blends offers a unique experience for the drinker. Some subtle, some sensual, some sublime. We hear one in particular is just what the doctor ordered for your romantic weekend away… (Here’s a tip… it’s the one called Midnight Desire – nudge-nudge-wink-wink say no more.) Visit the cellar door for tastings, open Friday to Monday 10am-5pm or by appointment 5348 1920.

PLATS du jour sounds a wee bit fancy, for what is merely a casual lunch. Whilst it quite literally translates (in French) to ‘plate of the day’, there is also an upward trend of the French custom of ‘plats du jour’ – shared plate styled eating. Not one to miss a beat, Lake house (4 King Street, Daylesford), have jumped on board that trend and are offering multiple shared platter two course lunch specials midweek, Monday to Friday, from just $50.The dishes will celebrate seasonal and local ingredients and for a slight change in pace offer a more casual style of eating either on the outdoor terraces overlooking Autumnal foliage or the waters of lake Daylesford or in dining room that Lake House had became famed for. Bookings recommended. Telephone: 5348 3329 or for more information visit: lakehouse.com.au.

WE COULDN’T have worded it better, so we didn’t… “Lily and King are a lovely acoustic mess from Melbourne, Australia. Our aim is to use all of our limbs for making music at the one time, and to find more junk to hit. Our music is joyful, beautiful and a bit dirty and wicked too.” Signed the artists! Lily (Lisa Baird) and King (Tony King) have been called, raw, rambunctious, soulful and wild. Sounds like our kinda night out! This month check them out for yourself, head to Horvat’s (Shop 8 Howe Street, Daylesford) on Saturday, April 21, from 9pm for an ‘abundance of foot stomping’…more information on this quirky duo visit: lilyandking.com or for more information on the venue phone: 5348 2333 or visit: horvatwines.com.Full gig guide for April can be found starting on page 51.

free arty inspirationAn entire weekend of

ploughing up HepburnMassy Ferguson

WITH a brilliant name like Massy Ferguson, how could we not write about this rock and twang band from USA?? As quoted in the Seattle Weekly: “You know only good things can come from a band that named itself after a farm-equipment company” And let’s face it… not just any farm machinery company! This alt country rock quartet from Seattle appears to have put themselves on a sightseeing tour of Victorias’ prettiest places, and are heading to Hepburn town fresh from the Apollo Bay Music Festival on Tuesday, April 24 with the promise to rock the Palais (111 Main Road, Hepburn Springs). Let’s hope they’re touring on a comfy bus rather than a combine harvester. Tickets are $50 dinner and show (6.30pm)/$15 pre-sale show only (8.30pm). Info: thepalais.com.au or 5348 4849.

FOR decades, artists from all over have found themselves being struck by inspiration right here. Perhaps it’s the water? The air? The coffee? (yep, probably that last one). Since the 1800s the region has collected, nurtured and showed off more than its fair share of tremendously creative peeps and their works. And Thursday, April 26 – Sunday April 29, forty of Castlemaine’s best fling open their Studio doors, and welcome you inside their inner sanctum for a chat, a stickybeak, and to check out finished works and what’s ahem… on the drawing board. The Inaugural Castlemaine Art’s Open is a festival of open studios, and showcases the works of sculptors, photographers, painters, animators, jewellers, printmakers and combinations of the above. Works will be for sale, but even if you don’t purchase, you’ll be richer for the experience. For more on artists and studio locations go to: artsopen.com.au or call: 5472 2225.

UNLESS you’re from planet Mars and on some kind of hunger strike, you’re probably aware we’re not short on dining establishments ‘round here. From white starched linen, to white paper wrapped fish n chips, whatever you feel like feasting on tonight there’s a pretty big chance you’ll be patting the belly post-dinner, smiling in that “ahhh I so loved that meal” kinda way. If spice is on the agenda, Daylesford has a new Thai restaurant/take away worth its Tom Yum. Red Ginger Thai (31 Albert Street) has a comprehensive and authentic Thai menu, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options available for happy tummies all round. Red Ginger Thai is open six nights a week (closed Tuesday) from 5:30pm. There is a $15 lunch special available 11am – 2:30pm Friday till Sunday. Phone for reservations and take away orders 5348 1163. Harvest Weekall in good tastePICK any of the 52 weeks on the calendar and you’re guaranteed a gourmet experience in this region. Each of the four seasons delivers stellar produce, and super-talented kitchen folk mix, whip, blend, bake, cure and concoct all manner of deliciousness to showcase what’s freshest and in abundance at any given time. Great local food is relished here all year round… but especially so at Harvest time. Daylesford Macedon Produce Harvest Festival is a celebration of harvest. This festival dates back to the days when the success (or failure) of crops would make or break a community. The Harvest Festival will be held Friday, April 27, till Sunday, May 6, and will feature events, workshops, competitions, samples and tastings, and more great food than you can poke a fork at. The list of things to do/eat as you taste your way around the region is many and varied… From forums on sustainable agriculture, to composting, from preserving to bread baking. Try your hand at Bullboar Sausage Making Workshops with Gary Thomas, a Masterclass at the Lake House with Justin North, Paul Wilson, Teage Ezard and Alla Wolf-Tasker, take a walking tour and Slow dinner at Tuki Trout Farm, browse the trestles laden with just picked produce at the Daylesford & Lancefield Farmers’ Markets or try your hand at Italian Cheese Making at Aperitivo in Kyneton. There great initiatives for foodie kids this year, a special kids illustration and writing workshop about food production, and the Harvest Week Festival Junior Chef of the Year competition, this year’s theme is based on the humble potato (well, over 30 varieties are grown around here, so the kiddies of the region have gotta love their spuds!) For everyone else, there’s a restaurant, café, market, farm gate stall, cellar door and tasting plate with your name on it. Hope you packed your appetite. Throughout the week look for the Harvest Festival/Daylesford Macedon Produce farm gate signs on restaurants, cafes, farm gates, cellar doors and food stalls and around the region. For bookings, information, and the full program of events go to: dmproduce.com.au/harvest.

Then you can blog away your experiences as you make changes both large and small. Info: localharvest.org.au/take-the-challenge, there is a facebook page facebook.com/localharvest.org.au and twitter name: twitter.com/localharvester/ (as if there wouldn’t be!) DAYLESFORD doesn’t do Prada. Well at least it didn’t. Until Carolyn Managh came along. Her plight to Prada-up Daylesford one encounter at a time has resulted in the recent publishing of her blog series : ‘Tweed Tea & Wellies’, the story of a city chick meandering through the rugged country wilderness… The book ‘to Daylesford with Love’ delves further into the lifestyles of the author and the many ‘local and famous’ and poses the question (quite oft) “where are all of the single men hiding out?”. It’s an amusing tale of the daily challenges of country (Prada-less) life and just proof that there is something in the water around here...and that there may even be drop bears...‘To Daylesford with Love’ is on sale locally at: Larder Daylesford, Convent Gallery, and Daylesford Visitor Info Centre, for more, visit: tweedteaandwellies.com.

word has gotten out...There’s movement at the station

THE Palais in Hepburn is an icon in the region, bumping in bands from all over the country and around the globe week in, week out. “Sure”, you say, “we know the Palais is ace lost... tell us something new”… Okay. How’s this? The Palais had a complete refurb-nip-and-tuck last year, and built itself the grand-daddy of all wood fired pizza ovens, and boxes up pizza love five nights a week (Wednesday till Sunday) A highlight on the pizza menu (and somewhat appropriate this time of year) is ‘The Be Jesus’. “Divine?” you ask?… Uh Huh. Olive tapenade, rockling fillets, leek, chilli and mozzarella. Best you say Grace before you scoff the lot. Check out The Palais pizza menu online at thepalais.com.au. Call ahead on 5348 4849, or call in at 111 Main Road Hepburn Springs.
