AUTUMN in this region is just out-of-control-super-gorgeous. Crunchy leaves in flame colours, warm clothes, frosty morns and open fires. It’s like we’re living in a great big Autumn picture postcard cliché. And It. Is. Sweet. Autumn also brings with it a favourite seasonal visitor to the region. In their thousands. All manner, shapes, sizes and colours of fungi. From perfectly round circles of fairy ring toadstools to the classic red-with-white-spots fairy toadstool, delicious field mushrooms, even gourmet truffles, Central Victoria is home to an amazing variety of fungi species. But before you go foraging for a basket of forest-fresh-mushies to sauté and serve up with eggs on toast, best you learn what you can and can’t pick around these parts. As well as some wonderful edible varieties, the region is also a prime area for the particularly nasty species, the Death Cap (Amanita phalloides). This toxic mushroom looks very similar to several edible mushroom varieties, however the Death Cap is responsible for more fungal poisoning fatalities worldwide than any other species. (Including two recent tragic fatalities in Canberra.) The best way to discover what’s on the menu and what’s not, is to be guided by an expert. Photographer and fungi expert Alison Pouliot runs fascinating fungi workshops throughout the region in Autumn, introducing participants to the incredible diversity and curiosities of the fungi kingdom. Alison’s workshops address identification, ecology, history and include a field trip to nearby forests to search for what has popped up this week. Participants are advised to wear weather appropriate clothing. (Here’s the heads up… It’s usually wet). The first workshop is The Fungi, An Introduction to a Curious Kingdom. To be held Saturday, April 14. The second workshop is The Bizarre and the Beautiful, A Deeper Exploration of a Curious Kingdom, to be held Sunday, April 15. Both sessions will be held at Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (High Street). Cost for each session: $70. Permaculturefrom wasteland to oasisTHE first Sunday of each month (April 1 this month) you can learn how to become just that bit greener by taking a tour of one of Australia’s best documented and well known permaculture demonstration sites, Melliodora (16 Fourteenth St, Hepburn Springs). Not familiar with permaculture? Well, your tour guide at Melliodora, David Holmgren, can help… as he, and Bill Mollison, originally coined the word in the ‘70s to describe “an integrated, evolving system of perennial or self-perpetuating plant and animal species useful to man”. Melliodora is a mudbrick passive solar house, complete with mixed food gardens, orchards, dams and livestock, it’s even bushfire resistant. The creek revegetation demonstrates how permaculture can help restore and improve land. Incredible to think Melliodora was a blackberry covered wasteland in the ‘80s before the Holmgrens rescued it. ANDERSON’S Mill is a pretty impressive five storey bluestone flour mill built 150 years ago at Smeaton. The Anderson family milled flour and oats for about 100 years before grain farming moved to other regions. In the 1970s, the Mill became one of the first buildings added to the Historic Buildings register. And after a whole lot of elbow grease the Mill has been restored and each year celebrates the fact it’s still standing at its very own festival.The Anderson’s Mill Festival will be held Sunday, April 1, 10am – 5pm. Well then ‘lycra up’ for the annual Mad Ride this Sunday, April 1, as the Melbourne Bicycle Touring Club Inc. holds the 29th consecutive Melbourne Autumn Daytour. The ride takes well,… riders, on a picturesque journey through the rolling hills and forest of the Macedon Ranges. Rogainingall for glory. And chocolateAHHH Daylesford, a blissful, relaxing paradise. Day spas, cosy open fires, daytime siestas under alpaca throws. A heavenly place in Autumn for lovers of relaxation and serious downtime. Daylesford is all this and more… unless of course, you are a Rogainer.Rogaining (for those uninitiated) is a hybrid of marathon, orienteering and the gentle art of bush bashing… on foot. For hours on end. For no financial gain. No alpaca throws in sight. The Victorian Rogaining Association is holding two x 6 hour Rubys and Basalt Rogaine events just out of Daylesford, Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15. 10am – 4pm each day. The point of Rogaining is to navigate your way through an open air course, with a map and compass, locating and checking off various checkpoints along the way. (The organisers are tricky folk and like to hide them too, it ain’t as easy as it sounds!) Once you’ve found them all, the winner is presented with chocolate. (Nice.) And you get to relax at the Hash House. (Well, a little relaxation is mandatory, it is Daylesford after all!) After six hours of mind bending map reading, and flat out cross country running, the Hash House delivers the goods with a BBQ, cheese toasties, stews, soups, cakes, and drinks. Now as much as we love the great outdoors, the publishers of this (somewhat appropriately named) magazine, have been known to take the wrong turn down a one way path, following a GPS, (true story). So rest assured you won’t find us traipsing through the bush with said compass, oh no. We have word that the local rescue chopper crew and associated dog squads would be most displeased with us if we attempted this event, so we’ll sit this one out thanks, (despite the lure of chocolate and toasted cheese sangas). But for the more adventurous of you… GO FOR IT! (Just remember to book a day spa and massage afterwards!) At the Australian Body Art Awards it is highly doubtful you’ll see a Spiderman in competition, instead, you can expect jaw droppingly elaborate art on human canvasses painted by highly skilled body artists from around the country. Go and get locavored!subtitle: eat more beetrootHOW hard can it be to connect growers and producers to consumers? Seems like a basic supply and demand scenario. Except, simple it is anything but... Just at the end of last month Dick Smith gave away $100000 of tinned beetroot that he bought from a NSW farmer who could not sell it. This poor farmer was about to plough it back into the earth as he couldn’t compete with the influx of cheaper overseas imports. Recently Aussie supermarkets made statements that Australians will always buy cheaper produce over anything from local farmers… well, let’s not generalise folks… but perhaps those supermarket peeps need to venture on down to the Daylesford region. Part time Hepburn resident Ewan McEoin, from the Locavore Edition, is doing his bit to stop the madness and has cleverly published the first comprehensive guide to Victoria’s regional produce and the people that grow, make and sell it. Aptly titled: ‘The Field Guide to Victorian Produce’ the aim is simple: reconnect producers and consumers, (shazzam!) And to bring transparency, authenticity and provenance to the foreground by sharing the stories of over 300 Victorian growers, producers and providers. Ewan hopes by sharing these stories much needed connectivity will be built in this sector of community, which can only be a good thing, right?Of course Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges features as does interviews from well known Victorian chefs in: Alla Wolf-Tasker, Stefanie Alexander, Dan Hunter, Michael Ryan, Andrew McConnell and Stefano Di Pieri to name a few. NOTHING wrong with a bit of train love. The Daylesford Spa Country Railway, (operating out of the historic Daylesford Train Station, 18 Raglan Street), is run on a little bit of hard work, and a whole lot of loco love. The lovingly restored tourist trains that run weekly from Daylesford’s Sunday Market through the bush to Musk, are all maintained, cleaned, driven, and operated by volunteers, and all monies raised from ticket sales go back to restoring the trains, tracks and grounds. Ahh they’re a passionate bunch the volunteers at DSCR, so if you’re handy with maintenance-y stuff, and mad about trains, the team would love you to volunteer your time at the next Way and Works Working Bee, Saturday, April 21, from 10am. IT takes an almighty effort to make a good bottle of wine. And when you think of what those precious bunches on the vine have to contend with before they make it to the bottle, (surviving bugs, frost, birds, hail, wind, storms and wildlife – phew!) once they’re safely picked it’s time to celebrate! Here is a list of places withthin this region to honour the sacrifice, salute the service and learn from the price paid for freedom of country:MOUNT MACEDON play host to one of the largest Dawn Services in Victoria at the Memorial Cross (Macedon Regional Park, Mt Macedon). Its the most significant war memorial in Victoria after the Shrine of Remembrance. Commences at 6am. DAYLESFORD dawn service will be held at 6.30am followed by march to the Cenotaph. Assemble at Daylesford Town Hall at 10am for 10.15am March to Cenotaph, where remembrance service will be held. Refreshments to follow at the RSL rooms.CRESWICK Dawn service will be held at 6am at the Cenotaph, a gun fire breakfast at 6:30am at the RSL ($5 donation), march commences 10:30am with a remembrance service at 10:45am at the Cenotaph followed by light refreshments at the RSL.
