Shih-Yen (A. K. A. David) Lo is a man with great passion on vehicles. When he was young, fascinated by movable model and handlaunched airplane models. Majored in naval architecture as an undergraduate student and now joining a MA program of vehicle R&D.
Deeply realized that human civilization need a whole new transpor-tation system in future, David has a dream of becoming a vehicle designer who have the abilities of engineering and styling, wish that could figure out a transportation not only energy efficient, but also full of fun.
Meanwhile, David love photography, cycling, hiking, and handicraft-ing. Not satisfied by most of mass produced tools he bought for those hobbies, David deeply realized that engineering is not the only way to make human lives better. But he knows that design do, and tried several projects to realize his well-designed tools.
In the journey to his dream, David tries to enrich himself with the knowledge and skill of design, which was the totally new field against his own study of machenical engineering. David knows there is a long long journey to go, but he will do his best to struggle out. This portfo-lio is the way David went through, he is still in the journey.

The six-week summer session offers three courses: Architectural His-tory from the Baroque period to Present day, Introduction to Design Studio and Introduction to Representation. This program enhanced my basic design ability which will allow my thought process in me-chanical analysis more consummate and application of the theoretical knowledge more flexible.

The goal of this project is to build a brand-new pure electric car. The team is expected to practice the procedure to build and test a car from their own design. The car is designed to consume only 360kJ per kilometer.I took charge of the styling of this car. Start from 2D sketches and 1:10 clay model, the styling process is followed by reverse measure-ment and 3D modelling. A 1:18 rapid prototype is also produced to test the aerodynamic efficiency of the shape in a wind tunnel. Finally the car is built by carbon-fibre composites and had several road tests in during October 2010 to March 2011.

The theme of the project is transform, which wants students to design a product in the modified shape of other products.Idea, styling, and ergonomics are the most important considerations in this project.

This project describes a new transportation solution. The solution was created to solve recent and future transportation problem by a new design method, which contains a four-level-design process: society design, service design, vehicle design, and introduction strategy. The process carries out a new vehicle and a new business model. The business model is designed to change the current automotive business model, which would highly improve the material use and energy efficiency of passenger transit by changing the relationship and the connections between each character involved in the business model.
iPLEV, or intelligent personal lightweight electric vehicle, is the vehi-cle introduced by this transportation system. It is a 3-wheel personal vehicle which has 4 modes: driving, riding, pedestrian, and folded mode. By transforming between former 3 modes, the vehicle can be used in different places and different gestures for the driver. The folded mold is designed to combine with other mass transit systems like MRT, bus, and high speed railway…etc. By combining the iPLEV and mass transit system, we achieve our goal of door-to-door person-al transportation—the intrinsic need of human transportation.
Start from mind mapping, the iPLEV team imagine their future transportation system. The high efficiency transporta-tion system is convenient and energy-saving.

This is a personal in-course project in NTU in the topic of green design. The dish dryer is attached to refrigerator and gain its heated air to dry the tableware. To dry the dishes, the shape of vents is very important since it not only emit warm airs but also support the table-ware steadily.

Postcard / Paper Model Design: Library of Tawian University, Oxford College and Cathedral of Aletheia University2009.2-2009.4175*124mm3D modeling, postcard layout designCo-work with Ming-Yu Wei
The objective of this project is to design two sets of postcards that can be made into 3D replica of National Taiwan University’s Main Li-brary, and Aletheia University’s Oxford College and Cathedral.
As the attachment of the yearbooks for graduationg students, each se-ries of postcards are carefully designed, in order to keep the memory of the campus, the significant building of each school are transformed into paper models.
The project is co-worked with Ming-Yu Wei, recently a M. Arch1 student of National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan.) Started from measurement and estimation, the simplified 3D models are builded and Pepakura Designer is adopted here to generate the expansions of the buildings. Based on the expansions, the exterior of the building is rendered by Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

OLFA Cutter - ModifiedCustomized wooden grip & packaging for OLFA SAC-1 cutter2010.2-2010.6190*60*10mmConcept Design, 3D Modeling, mockup, merchandisePersonal Project, consulted by Chih-Feng Li.
As a crazy modeler, a series of nice cutters is very essential for manual model building. The project wants to remind people that natural materials are the best. The idea comes from a pair of limited edition cutters with wooden grip offered by OLFA Inc. in 1983 and 1984.Started from several mockups, the shape of the grip and the auto-lock mechanism of the cutter is discussed and modifies based on ergonomics, stylish, and material.8 species of woods are finally adopted to manufacture the grip and totally about 30 cutters are modified, repackaged, and sold out rapidly.
