the Panther Press Los Primeros School of Sciences and Arts Principal’s Letter Greeting Panthers! It’s hard to believe that we have already completed our first six weeks of school and that we have already accomplished so much. It has been a very exciting start of the school year and I wish to thank everyone who has helped make it such a huge success. It was a pleasure to see many of you at Back to School Night and to celebrate the wonderful learning experiences taking place in our classrooms each day. It is an honor and a privilege to work with such an amazing team of professionals and so many families dedicated to excellence in education. We have already started our 4/5 PE program with Coach Carter as well as our art classes with Dr. Arthington. We have also completed the installation of our first three SMART classrooms and are beginning to incorporate interactive technology. These programs and many others are generously supported by the PTO and your donations. We are also on month two of our Student of the Month program, focusing on character education. Our character trait for the month of October is Respect – treating others the way we would like to be treated. In middle school, we have begun our fifth season in the Camarillo Independent Sports League, starting the 2013-2014 school year with flag football and volleyball. Games are played after school Monday through Thursday here at Los Primeros and at the former Los Altos site. We are now beginning our school’s major fundraiser for the year – the LPSSA Jog-a-thon. This year’s theme, Medieval Madness, promises to be an exciting event and will continue to fund programs like PE, sciences, arts and technology for our students. Information went home with all students last week and I hope that every family can participate and support our school. Please also start looking for information about this year’s school play, The Sound of Music, sponsored by the Los Primeros Education Foundation. This is an amazing opportunity available to all students in grades 3-8 to participate in the performing arts and have a wonderful experience with their peers. In closing, I wish to remind all families how important daily attendance is. Our funding is based on daily student attendance. Using last year’s formula, each day a child was not present for any reason, the school lost $46. This year’s change in the funding formula could raise that amount. Please do not schedule outings during the school week that can take place on weekends. If your child will be out for five consecutive days, we can arrange independent study, and upon completion of the work, we can receive credit for the student being present. If child has fever or is vomiting, of course he/she needs to stay home until he/she is fever free for 24 hours. Please work with us to ensure that your child is here at school every single day possible. OCTOBER 201 3

Principal’s Letter Greeting Panthers! It’s hard to believe that we have already completed our first six weeks of school and that we have already accomplished so much. It has been a very exciting start of the school year and I wish to thank

everyone who has helped make it such a huge success. It was a pleasure to see many of you at Back to School Night and to celebrate the wonderful learning experiences taking place in our classrooms each day. It is an

honor and a privilege to work with such an amazing team of professionals and so many families dedicated to excellence in education.

We have already started our 4/5 PE program with Coach Carter as well as our art classes with Dr. Arthington. We have also completed the installation of our first three SMART classrooms and are beginning to incorporate

interactive technology. These programs and many others are generously supported by the PTO and your donations. We are also on month two of our Student of the Month program, focusing on character education.

Our character trait for the month of October is Respect – treating others the way we would like to be treated.

In middle school, we have begun our fifth season in the Camarillo Independent Sports League, starting the

2013-2014 school year with flag football and volleyball. Games are played after school Monday through Thursday here at Los Primeros and at the former Los Altos site.

We are now beginning our school’s major fundraiser for the year – the LPSSA Jog-a-thon. This year’s theme, Medieval Madness, promises to be an exciting event and will continue to fund programs like PE, sciences, arts

and technology for our students. Information went home with all students last week and I hope that every family can participate and support our school. Please also start looking for information about this year’s school

play, The Sound of Music, sponsored by the Los Primeros Education Foundation. This is an amazing opportunity available to all students in grades 3-8 to participate in the performing arts and have a wonderful

experience with their peers.

In closing, I wish to remind all families how important daily attendance is. Our funding is based on daily

Save the Date!

PTO Meeting Thursday, November 7

Restaurant Night Wednesday, November 13

Texas Cattle Co. is donating 20% of what we spend at lunch or dinner back to Los Primeros. Hope to see y’all there!

We will be meeting at 2:30 in the MPR. We hope you can join us to find out what is happening at Los Primeros!

October is a very exciting month here at LPSSA. October 21-25 we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention awareness campaign that is observed throughout the United States every October. It was founded after the kidnapping, torture and murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in 1985. The red ribbon was worn in honor of Kiki and has become a symbol for prevention of drug and alcohol use. This year’s Red Ribbon theme is “A Healthy Me is Drug Free”. Our focus will be on making safe, healthy, and smart choices in all that we do. We will be visited by the Police Department, the Bomb Squad, the Fire Department and the Ventura County DUI trailer. The trailer will be on Campus Friday, October 25. It will present a wonderful opportunity to discuss with your child the dangers of drinking and driving. Red Ribbon Week is also a great week to talk with your child about internet safety. Social media sites abound, and have proven to be potentially harmful and dangerous. We deal with everything from bullying to child predators. As adults we have the responsibility to lead by example. We expect our children to use social media sites in a very positive and respectful manner. We should do the same. Please think before you post. Please make sure if what you are posting needs to be in a public social forum such as Facebook or Instagram. Give your child the knowledge, tools, and example to handle life outside of public social media sites. I know we have great families here at LPSSA who all want the absolute best for our children. Setting an example of moral excellence is the best thing we can do for them. Please come visit our next PTO meeting Thursday, November 7th at 2:30 in the MPR. I look forward to seeing you!

COMMUNITY SERVICE BULLETIN

We’re Batty for Box Tops! It’s October and Halloween will be here before we know it! Did you know that’s is eerily easy to help Los Primeros earn free cash by turning in your trash? Clipping the little pink Box Tops from your favorite General Mills, Green Giant, Fiber One, Ziploc, Betty Crocker, Yoplait, Cascadian Farms, and many other brands, will earn 10cents for each Box Top we submit at the end of October. So simple it’s scary! This month there will be a Barrel For Bucks in the office. Print out the Box Top Buck below. Make sure your child’s name and their teacher’s name is on the Box Top Buck, attach 10 Box Tops and drop it in the Barrel For Bucks before October 25th. Each Box Top Buck you turn in is a chilling chance to be drawn as a winner of a trick-free treat! If every Los Primeros student could turn in just one filled Box Top Buck each month, that would add up to $6,000 for our school! That’s Frighteningly Free money! For more information on how you can help our school earn cash through Box Tops for Education, contact our Box Top Coordinator, Eileen Valles at 805-383-1330 [email protected] or Heather Ruggiero at 805-384-1390 [email protected]. Don’t forget to sign in at http://www.boxtops4education.com/ to see all the other ways to help earn cool cash for Los Primeros.

Tape or glue 10 Box Tops to this Box Top Buck and it magically becomes a dollar for Los Primeros!
