Lorenzo’s father was Bartoluccio Ghiberti, a trained artist and goldsmith, who trained his son in the gold trade.

Lorenzo Ghiberti was an Italian designer, sculptor, goldsmith, architect and writer.

Ghiberti was born in Florence in1378 and died at the age of seventy seven in 1455. The Gates of Hell of Augusta Rodin were inspired by the "Gates of Paradise.

He first came to prominence as winner of the 1401 competition for a set of bronze doors to the Florence Bapistry.

The winner of this got to make the first set of bronze doors for the Bapistry of the cathedral in Florence. Brunelleschi was the runner up. The original plan was for the doors to depict scenes from the Old Testament, and the trial piece was the sacrifice of Isaac. However, the plan was changed to depict scenes from the New Testament instead.

Gates of Paradise

Ghiberti's winning piece for the 1401 competition, was The Gates of Paradise with the scene still framed by a medieval motif.

The Neopolitan Baldassare Cossa The only tomb in the Baptistery is that of

the Neapolitan Baldassare Cossa alongside no less than two rival Popes

The tomb, organized and paid for by the Medicis to say "thank you", was sculpted by Donatello.
