    LORD, TEACH US TO PRAYBy

    W. V. GRANTChapter I

"And i t came to pass, that as he was p raying in acertain place, when he ceased, one o f h is disciples saidunto him, 'LORD TEACH US TO PRAY ... '" (Luke11:1).There ar e lots of things I cannot do. There are

many things I have often wished I knew how to do.But above all of these things I would l ike to knowhow to pray. I have often fel t like saying the samething, "Lord, teach me to pray."WHAT IS WRONG WHEN PRAYER FAILS? Andwe all know it sometimes does. Have you often won

dered why some of the direct promises a re not fulfilledin your life?" If ye ask anything in my name I will do it " (John14:14). "... Ask, and it shall be given YOU; seek andYE shall find; knock, and it shall b e opened untoYOU. For EVERYONE that asketh receivetl1 . . ."(Luke 11:9-10).Why are not these and scores of other simple state-

ments Jesus made fulfilled in ou r l ives? Does n9 t thetrouble lie within us instead of Jesus th e Son of God?WE THINK OF MANY THINGS WHICH HINDER

PRAYER. God's Word says one reason prayers gounanswered we may ask amiss that we may consumeit upon ou r own l us t ( James 4:3).Fo r instance, i f we spend th e money which shouldgo to God's minis ter on ourselves we t hink more ofourselves than we do God's man and th e work ofGod or souls.H is possible for us to think more of ou r house thanwe do God's house. That is when we fi x our house up

2 Lord, Teach Us to Pray Lord, Teach Us to Pray 3better than we do God's house. Many people pu t rugson their floors when God's house has no rugs. (readHaggai chapter one) Solomon spent about twice asmuch time on his own house than he did God's house.

Others think more of their work than they do thework of God. I remember hearing of a man whoclimbed the banis ters of a river bridge to go to workone morning. The water was running over the bridge. He would not do that to go to work for God. He stayedat home from Sunday School because it rained.Even a U. S. postman is requi red to go as fa r as

he can before he turns to come back. I f a bridge iswashed out a mail carrier goes to the bridge beforehe returns . God's work is more important. Some people will find the best job they call ge t andthen go to the church which happens to be at thatplace. Bu t wouldn't it be more consistant for us tofind th e church God wants us t o worship in and thenwork at the job that happens to be at that place?I asked a deacon to go to church with me onenight. The first excuse he made was th at it was toocold. I told him we had a good heater in th e car andin the church. Then he said he was not ready . I toldhim I would wait until he got ready. He said his wifewas not feeling well. "I will pray for God to heal her,"I replied. Then he hung his head and grunted, "Idon't believe I want to go tonight." Why didn't hetell the truth in th e first place inst ead of tellingthree lies?Moses told Pharoah, God said, "Let my people go

that they may serve me" (Ex. 7:16). And that is thereason God sets us free from bondage, that we mayserve Him; that we may present our bodies to Hima living sacrifice, as the temples of the Holy Ghost,-a dwelling place for Him (Romans 12:1; I Cor. 3:16;6:19). God is concerned about our bodies.Jesus was greatly concerned about the nine leper

who failed to return ana give Him the glory for healingtheir bodies (Luke 17:17).The first place Hezekiah went after he was healed

was to the house of God (I I Kings 20:5). The lame manat the Beautiful Gate went to worship immediatelyafter his healing (Acts 3:8). Peter went to prayer meet-ing as soon as he saw he was delivered from prison(Acts 12:12). We need to give our lives to God's service. It is a new, divine life that He gives to us. His glory Hewill not give to another (Isa. 42 :8).THERE ARE MANY OTHER TIllNGS WInCH

HINDER PRAYERS FROM BEING ANSWERED.I t would take volumes to tell how unforgiving spiritsin our hearts (Matt . 6:15), and different kinds of in-iquities (Isa. 59:2) will hinder our prayers from beinganswered. Unkind words, bitterness, and envy will hin-der God from answering ( l Peter 3:7).Eating too much and fai ling to fast may separateone from th e Spiri t of prayer.Paul said for us to be temperate in ALL things.

There are some things for us to abstain from. We areto be temperate in all legit imate things. We must notgo to extremes in many things which are all right todo. In the last days many love pleasures MORE thanthey love God (I I Tim. 3:4). There are many thingswhich are not a sin; bu t we must put God first in ourlives (Mat t. 6:33). We must medi ta te on God's Wordday and night (Ps. 1:2). We must have much of God'sWord in us if we keep faith and the desire to pray.We must not let other things take the t ime we need togive to prayer. But all these things only separate us from the an-ointing to pray.WHAT IS WRONG WHE YOU GET THE A -

OINTI GAD THEN PRAYER FAlLS? This will bediscu ed in the following chapters of this book.REMEMBER THAT JESUS WAS THE ONLY ONE

AT THAT TIME WHO KNEW HOW TO PRAY. Thedisciples did not have the anointing, and they knew it.And best of all, they confessed it. That accounts as towhy they later went places with God. Many today willnot confess that they do not have th e anointing topray. So they go ahead saying prayers.Remember at this time the disciples slept while th eMaster prayed (Luke 22 :45). Although their nameswere written in Heaven (Luke 10:20) they did notknow how to pray to get the answer (Mk. 9:28). Theresults t hey saw was because JesUs had spent nightsin prayer and His presence was with them. After Heleft they were powerless until they received the Pray-er.

4 Lord, Teach Us to Pray Chapter IIPATTERN FOR PRAYER

JESUS THEN GAVE THE DISCIPLES A f?AT-TERN FOR PRAYER. I t is not th e Lord's j>rayer . I twas for the disciples to use unti l they receiveci thePray-er. I t is all the prayer some people have. The:Y sayit instead of praying it. We have no record where Jesusor the disciples ever repeated these words as lin ejCcusefor praying.Since prayer is a sincere desire of the heart untoGod we can pray a prayer in our heart, ot we can

render lip service to God without a prayer in our hearts(Mk.7:6).This pattern is given in different Gospels with a littledifferent words, having th e same meaning:OUR FATHER WIllCH ART IN HEAVENAt that time the disciples were instructed 1:0 pr;ay tc

their Father in heaven. After they went back anJd received th e Comforter their Father was no long;er inheaven only, but He came on the inside of therr1 andtook up His abode to dwell there (John 1 4 : 2 ~ ) .The Father was at that t ime dwelling in J e s u ~ anddoing all the mighty works by th e anointillg o ~ th eHoly Ghost ( John 14:10), (Luke 4:18), (Acts 10:38).

Jesus told them i f He wen t to His Father and sewt theHoly Ghost to them they could do the same Work;s, forthey too would have the Father dwelling in them ~ J o h n14:10,12). .HALLOWED BE THY NAMEWe must consider the Father' s name sacred" andcome into His presence in an att itude of woo ship>

yesterday's manna. We need a fresh supply every day.Healing is the children's bread (Matt. 15:23). I f weask for bread we will not get a stone (Luke 11:11).FORGIVE OUR SINSI t is quite all r ight for us to pray for the Lord toforgive OUR sins, meaning national sins, as some of

the old saints did. I t is al l right to pray fo r God toforgive your individual sins i f you have them. Andth e disciples seemingly had them. But after Pentecostthey were ABIDING IN HIM: and HE WAS ABIDINGIN THEM (John 14:17). He that abideth in Him sinneth not (1 John 3:6).AS WE FORGIVE OTHERSI f you pray after this pattern you ar e praying fo r

God to forgive your sins just l ike you forgive others.I f you want God to put your sin in the sea of His forgetfulness and never mention it again , you must no tmention what others did after you forgive them.LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION,BUT DELIVER US FROM EVILSome willfully go into temptations and then say theycould no t keep from sinning. They even say God led

them into sin, that t hey had to sin. No wonder theirprayers go unanswered (John 15:7).FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM, THE POWER,AND THE GLORY FOREVER.We must know that the kingdom which is in us,which furnishes this power, belongs to God. It is no t

ou r own power or holiness (Acts 3:12). It is amazingwhat we can do fo r God i f we care nothing fo r thecredit.

8 Lord, T each Us to Pray Chapter mGET THE PRAYER

JESUS HAD THE PRAY-ER AT THAT TIME ANDTHEY DID NOT. But He told them that they coulddo the same works He did after they received th e HolyGhost (John 14:12). That means they could pray justlike He did, with th e same results. I f we have the NewTestament experience we can have the New Testamentresults.MOST OF THE TIME AFTER PENTECOST THEY

JUST SPOKE THE WORD AND MIRACLES TOOKPLACE. Look at Peter and John merely speaking thewords of God to th e man at the'Gate called Beautiful(Acts 3) . Listen to Peter speaking to a man who kepthis bed eight years, and hear Pau l speak to a lifelesscripple, "Stand upright on thy feet." While Peter wasye t speaking a group of people received the Holy Ghost.Mighty results take place as he lays his hands onPhillip's converts (Acts 8) . They must have learnedto pray and p rayed through to the place so they hadthe answer.UP UNTIL PENTECOST THE DISCIPLES HAD

NEVER PRAYED IN THE NAME OF JESUS (John16:23-24). Bu t He told them after they received theanointing of the Holy Ghost they could ask anything inHis name and He would do it (John 14:12-20). Therighteous may carry the name of Jesus with them, orthey may run into the Narne where'they will be safe(soul and body) (Prov. 18:10). Then all they do inword or deed will be done in the Name (Col. 3:17).After they really got into the Narne they could haveth e signs fol lowing (Mk. 16:16-18), 'and minister topeople in the Name (Matt. 28:19-20; Acts 2:38-39).They saw a few things happen while they were with

    J'esus, because of th e prayers and anointing of Jesus;

10 Lord, Teach Us to Pray Get the Pray-er 11but a ft er Jesus lef t they could do nothing else unt ilJesus ~ m into them to dwell (John 14:16, 23).

The Comforter was sent in Jesus' name (John14:26). He comes to glorify Jesus (16:23); to manifestth e life of Jesus in us (14:26) . We are ambassadorsfo r Christ and PRAY IN HIS STEAD. He set us anexample that we should FOLLOW HIS STEPS. AsHe is so ar e we in this world.

Even Jesus did al l His works under th e anointingof th e Holy Ghost (Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38). So th eHoly Ghost can do th e same works through God'sanointed servants (John 14:17, 23, 10, 12).OUR FAITH IS BUILT UP WHEN THE HOLYGHOST PRAYS THROUGH US (Jude 20; I Cor. 14:4,

    14) . The gi ft of faith is one of the nine gifts th e HolyGhost manifests through us. I t is the faith of JesusChrist imparted. I t is th e fa it h o f God (Mk. 11 :22; ICor. 12:9). Jesus who then dwells in us is th e authorand finisher of our faith.IF THE PRAY-ER DOES NOT PRAY THROUGHYOU THERE IS NOT MUCHUSE IN YOUR SAYINGPRAYERS.I have known some groups at church services tell

hard luck stories about thirty minute before theypray' they call it "taking prayer requests." By thetime everyone is through telling what t he devil hasbeen doing to them and their kinfolks and friends allth e week, faith is dragged into th e dirt. Then th e poorpastor calls on a visiting minister, or a prominentmember, who has been too busy all day to pray to"lead us to the throne of grace in prayer." He says afew nice words, which sound good to the people's ears, and sits down with a congregation without the anointing.

The people wi th the ir own desires have told himwhat to pray for instead of th e Holy Ghost telling him.I returned to a church after about three years ab-

sence and found they had the same names on th eprayer list, and calling them every night at service~ c each day over the radio, and on Sunday m o r n ~mg. They had been calling them for about three years.I thought, "No wonder we have so many unbelievers.People testify for th e devil in every service."

After checking into it I found these old brothersand sisters wanted sympathy ins tead of healing. Assoon as the minister left their names off the list assoon as they heard that he did no t call it over 'thepulpit; they would call him up and get him told. Theywould sit by the radio to see if he was going to caDtheir names. He had to pu t t he names back on th elist or lose a good member.

How does God feel about these faith-killers?

(Matt . 20:20). So did Elijah have that experience (1Kings 19:4).We stand a chance to ask amiss when we pray for

what we want (James 4:5) . When we pray in theSpirit we never pray an IF prayer (Rom. 8:27). TheSpirit never prays contrary to God's will.

1/ I f we ask ANYTIllNG according to His willHe heareth us, and we know i f He heareth us, WHATSOEVER WE ASK, we know that we have'the petitions that we desired of Him ( I John 5:14-15).

When the Holy Ghos t is getting God's will throughus is the only time we know that all things work together for good to those called to this purpose (Rom.8:27-28).We cannot understand what we are saying when we

pray in the Spirit (1 Cor. 14). We cannot utter it withour language (Rom. 8:26). Our understanding is unf ruit ful because we do no t know for what to pray (ICor. 14:14). The Spirit makes the intercession for ushelping our infirmities. It was a good thing my mother did not understand

what the Holy Ghost was praying through her whenshe had a burden for me when I was out i n sin. Shewould have been so full of fear she would have had nofaith. The Holy Ghost prayed the prayer of faith inher and dropped the gift of faith in he r soul givinghe r the assurance before I came to God. ( I Cor. 12:9).

When my understanding was unfruitful the HolyGhost prayed through me 13 hours without stoppingand saved me $5,000 and a whole family. Anothertime the Holy Ghost prayed through me saving mybrother's life and soul while he was in a battle inWorld War II. 1 did no t know where he was untilafter I had the assurance of victory and learned whatI had prayed for.I could name so many many times, when I did not

Chapter IVWE DON'T KNOW HOW TO PRAY

WE SHOULD LEARN TO PRAY, BUT NOTLEARN HOW TO PRAY. Since the disciples admittedthat they did not know how to pray we should admitthe same. When we learn how to pre ach the Lord usuallystays in the background and lets us go ahead andpreach. When we learn how to pray we generally pray(or say) our prayers without depending on God.The story goes that a little girl was kneeling in anold time rail-fence corner saying something. When along coat preacher came along he stopped and finallydiscovered that she was doing nothing bu t repeating

her ABS's over and over again. When she finished he was anxious to know why shewas saying her alphabet over and over."I was praying," she answered.

Then he spent some time t ry ing to teach her topray. When he was exaus ted she still did no t seemto understand his big words."Oh le t me pray my way," she answered, "Jesusknows how to put these ABC's together and make agood prayer-just what I need." . . .God saw fai th in the girl that the mInIster did no thave.

THE APOSTLES NEVER LEARNED TO PRAY.Paul said "We know not wha t we should pray for as, .we ought, but the Spiri t i tself maketh interceSSIonfor the saints according to the will of God." (Rom.8:26-27) .

When Paul failed to le t the Spirit direct him topray he did no t know what t o p ray for (II Cor. 1.2:8).Peter, James, and John had the same experience(Luke 9:33, 54); also the mother of James and John

know danger was near, th e Holy Ghost prayed throughme and obtained the will of God for me.Since the Holy Ghost teaches us ALL things, Heteaches us whut to pr ay for (John 14:26). He showsus things to come (John 16:13).No wonder Paul said, as he was speaking about th eHoly Ghost praying through us, "We are MORE

THAN CONQUERORS," and "Who shall separate us"(Rom. 8) .PETER DID NOT KNOW HOW TO PRAY. He jus tlay on th e house top looking up into heaven. Heturned the whole thing over to the Holy Ghost. I twas AF"I'ER he prayed through that the Holy Ghostrevealed to him about three men coming after him,(Acts 10) and gave him a vision concerning God's will.

JUDE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO PRAY. He saidhe le t the Holy Ghost pray through him, building uphis faith. He advised all of us to do th e same (V. 20).Paul said when we pray in the Spirit we are built upor edified.JOHN DID NOT KNOW HOW TO PRAY. He justlay IN THE SPffiIT on th e Lord's day looking up intoheaven (Rev. 1:10). But it was revealed to him after ward wha t the Spirit had worked ou t for him.

I f we have th e ew Testament experience we willhave the New Testament results.

14 Lord, Teach Us to Pray Chapter VLET THE PRAYER PRAY

THERE ARE NO SUBSTITUTES OR SHORT CUTSTO PREVAILING PRAYER. There is no modern, upto-date, popular, way to pray that takes the place ofprayer that changes things.People will dr ive fifty miles per hour to beat afreight train across the' t rack , then stop and watchit go by. They talk about praying more than theypray. The reason they always say, "Pray for me."they have more confidence in the other man's prayerthan they do their own. I f he prays any he praysmore than they do.

WE HAVE PREACHER HYFROCRITES ALSO.Most pastors are the busiest men we have. Their workis impor tant , but not as important as prevailingprayer. The Apostles l et the ir helpers (not deaconswho bossed the preacher) take care of the materialthings while they gave themselves to th e Word of Godand prayer (Acts 6).Most modern ministers drive 75 miles per hour and

rush to service just in time to start. They have nottarried in God's presence enough to know the mind ofthe Spirit. They ge t everyone to do something i f theycan. They yell out, "I feel God here." They don't -feelanything and the people know it. They say, "I amhappy, praise the Lord." They are wishing servicewould get over as soon as possible. These poor preachers have nothing to feed theirpeople. When they see their members go somewhereelse to get a blessing they scold them by saying, "You

can get it anywhere. God is here." I f a poor saintwants deliverance he had rather go to a minister whogives himself continually to the Word of God andprayer.

16 Lord, Teach Us to Pray Let the Pray-er Pray 17AFTER THE APOSTLES TARRIED IN GOD'S

PRESENCE THEY HAD MESSAGES INSTEAD OFJUST SERMONS. THEY DID NOT SPECIALIZE INSERMONS. 'They did not say, " It does not make anydifference where you are." They brought the sick andfilled the streets full of them, trying to get them eveninto the shadow of th e man who had given God allhis t ime in prayer (Acts 5). They soon found out whohad the anointing of God with him. They did not say Peter was building a reputation

for himself. Peter was building confidence in God'spower and th e anointing. Peter and Paul were Pente-costal preachers who dePended on prayer i ns tead ofpolitics for promotion. Peter had enough gumption topreach the message he received from God i ns tead ofpreaching the sermon his denomination gave him(Acts 10). I t almost cost him his credentials once, bu the stood fo r God (Acts 15).Peter and Paul could have had enough business tokeep them busy, but they never got too busy to tarry

in God's presence in prayer.JESUS SET AN EXAMPLE THAT WE SHOmnFOLLOW HIS STEPS. He also could have had a largebusiness; but He took time to steal away and praywhole night s in th e mountains alone. 'The servant is

not greater than his Lord.WE SHOmn HAVE A CERTAIN PLACE TOPRAY. The next day after I was saved and filled I

determined I would fix me a special place where Icould pray in secret daily unt il I was refilled and hadth e assurance I was in the will of God. I would layf lat on my face in the pine straws, in the cotton seedat th e barn, or f la t on the bare ground. 'There I wouldpray ou t loud. Many times I would get full of t icks. I final ly gotwhere I would trust God to keep the ticks off me.

    11

    1]

Sometimes a snake would craw near me and lick outits tongue near my head. I 'd t rust God, and stay thereuntil victory came.I would wonder how Uncle Bob could ge t anywherein p rayer by jus t laying on his back in silence, sayinghe was praying. I wonder how Mamma could get victory praying in a whisper. And wouldn't city-folkback-slide with no woods to go to each morning?'The first time I had to live in town I' d walk threemiles each day where I' d pray out loud. After I wasrun out of that pasture I' d climb to th e top of th e courthouse and l ay flat of my face on the flat roof. WhenI was caught I would then go into a room and pulloff my clothes and go to bed, cover up my head andpray in a whisper. God could actually hear me!Later I got to a place so I could si t in a chair for

hours under God's power unt il victory came.HAVE A SPECIAL TIME TO PRAY. You have aspecial time to eat, sleep, work, bathe, and most every

thing else. Some believe in waiting until the are drivento prayer by conviction. That is a ft er they fail God.As the loving Father He is, God wants His childrento do things without being driven. He will answer ourprayers i f we do things which are pleasing in Hissight as well as keep His commandments ( I John3:22).When I was in business, working long hours, I wouldse t the a la rm and get up during the night to pray onehour. Later I took off an hour in the afternoon, lockedmyself up, and prayed while customers hunted me.When I was pastoring I made a rule that I would

no t get out of bed until I prayed through for everything I would face that day. I'd get my own breakfastor do without. I got out of bed generally between6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. I would go to my room at4:00 p.m. each day and pray through before I at e myevening meal. I would fix my own supper if it was

late when I prayed through. I at e somewhere between6:00 p.m. and midnight. Then for about 12 years Iat e two meals each day, 12:00 noon and 12:00 midnight. I adjusted my meals to f it my prayer hours instead of fixing my prayer time to match my meals. When I miss a regular hour of prayer I immediatelyfeel th e effects worse than a person who misses a regular cup of coffee. I get restless. When you have the Pray-er an hour of prayerseems like ten minutes. Without Him ten minutesseems like an hour. I ge t more result s f rom prayingone hour and preaching ten minutes'than praying tenminutes and preaching one hour.

    Chapter VIPRAY PRESISTENT PRAYERS

JESUS TEACHES IMPORTUNITY IN PRAYER.Immediately after Jesus gave th e disciples the patternfor prayer at that period He gave them a prettyparable of a man seeking three loaves of bread at midnight. Because of his importunity he received as muchas he needed. Then Jesus expounded the parable bysaying:"And I say unto YOU, ask and it shall be givenYOU; seek and YE shall find; knock and it shall beopened to YOU. For EVERYONE that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him thatknocketh it shall be opened." (Luke 11:9-10).That does not mean to ask a lit tle and quit, seek a

little and say you can't , or knock a few minutes andgive up. I t is not just repeating the words of whatpeople call the Lord's prayer. Some say "I have been seeking many years." ButGod says you shall find Him when you seek for Himwith ALL your heart (Jer. 29:13). So .many seek Godin a half-hearted, unconcerned, don't-care, slouchy, droopy, hap-hazard way. Let not that man that wavereth, or that is double-minded, think he will receiveanything (James 1:6-7).JESUS TEACHES US TO CONTINUALLY COME.(lBy her continual coming." (Luke 18:5)."And shall not God avenge His own elect that cryday and night unto Him?" (Luke 18:7).When God says, "EVERYONE that asketh receiv

eth," that means you do not have to go to college tolearn how to pray.JESUS TEACHES US NOT TO FAINT.'Men ought always to pray and not to faint" (Luke

    18:1).

20 Lord. T each Us to Pray Pray Persistent Prayers 2rUAnd let us not be weary in well doing; fo r in dueseason we will reap i f we faint not" (Gal. 6:9).UBut they that wait upon the Lord shall renew

their strength; they shall mount up with wings aseagles; they shall run and not be weary; and theyshall walk and not faint." !sa. 40:41).Just as one does not realize he is about to faint,or that he has fainted, until he comes to himself, sowe do not realize that we are about to faint or havefainted unt il we pray an hour or two and receive are-filling of the Spirit.

THE LORD IS A REWARDER OF THEM THATDILIGENTLY SEEK HIM (Heb. 11:6). Elijah was aman of like passion as we are. He prayed EARNESTLYand received the answers to his prayers . Signs, miracles, and wonders followed his ministry. He was caughtup alive.

Jude advised us to EARNESTLY contend for thefaith that was once delivered to t he saints (Jude 3) .

The woman with the issue of blood got in earnestand was healed because she pressed past the props (Mk.5). From the days of John the Baptist unti l now theKingdom of heaven is preached and EVERY MANpresseth into it.

Had the men who le t the man through the roofto Jesus been quitters they would never have gottenthe man where the presence of God was present toheal.

Had we been blind Bar timaeus we might not havepressed past the Pharisees, the Saducees, those whodid not want to see, and those who did not want othersto see (Luke 18) .Some people, had they been the Syrophonecianwoman would have said, 411 guess my daughter has athorn in the flesh" (Matt. 15:21).

PEOPLE HAD POWER IN PRAYER FOR PEI'ERIN PRISON. They made prayer to God without ceas-

ing. I t was not special songs, pretty preaching, ormelody in music that opened the prison doors. Theymay not have prayed in an audiable voice but theytarried until.

WE ARE COM:MANDED TO PRAY WITHOUTCEASING ( I Thes. 5:17). I think that means our continual coming (Luke 18:5), for we see where Jesusceased praying (Luke 11:1) . We should keep prayinguntil we get the answer (the assurance in our souls).Too many people when we ask them to pray forone hour promise they will, listen to th e radio, or visitthat hour, and say they prayed all day without ceasing. Our hearts should be in tune with God continually, but we need our hour of prayer which results in thelame man walking (Acts 3) . A quitter never wins-awinner never quits.

We Should Tany Before God 23Chapter vn

WE SHOULD TARRY BEFORE GOD IN PRAYERAFTER WE RECEIVE THE HOLY GHOST. Manypeople have been taught that they have to be perfectto receive the Holy Ghost. They tarry for yea rs before receiving the experience. After they are filledthey think they are perfect and do not tarry anymore. They have it backward. They should receive theHoly Ghost the same night they are saved and afterthat spend all the time they can in tarrying beforeGod in prayer. In every case after Pentecost the Holy Ghost wasgiven without tar rying. Before Pentecost the HolyGhost was not yet given (John 7: 37-37); since Pentecos t He has already been given. It is impossible to be

ready to enter into God's presence in Heaven and notbe ready to receive something to help get there andlead you into perfection.GOD IS WEARY OF HEARING MERE WORDS(Mal. 2:17). When we asked the ChrIstians to pray

thirty minutes each day one man stood in the serviceand said he could not think of enough things to sayto pray thirty minutes. That is the reason some saythe same thing over and over.God knows how to give us things (Matt . 7 :11). Heknows what we need before we ask Him (Matt . 6:8).We do not need to explain to Him. Prayer gets us ina position to receive things from God. It causes ourfaith to get on a plane so we will be in contact withGod.The f irst step is to tarry in God's presence until youfeel led to ask a petition and what to ask for. Duringthat time you may be silent; bu t in an a tt itude ofworship. The next step is to put in your petition. You are

not supposed to repeat the same thing over and ovel(Matt. 6:7). I f you ask something according to Hiswill you know that He hears you (I John 5:14). I fyou ask God seven times for something, six times arein unbelief. The nex t step, where most people fail, is to tarryin God's presence until He drops the answer into yourheart, giving you the assurance in your soul. The next step is to obey God and be led by theSpirit of God, so He can use you (i f He chooses to useyou) to bring the answer to pass.In tarrying in His presence let God talk to you in

stead of you explaining things to Him as though Hewere deaf and dumb and hal f crazy.GOD WILL DROP THE GIFT OF FAITH INTOYOUR HEART (I Cor. 12:9). Som times before ouspeak He will answer. Sometimes He will put assuranceinto your soul while you are yet speaking your petition(Isa. 65:24). Other times you wai t for some time before you get in an att itude of fai th to accept the vic

tory in your soul. Some want to see before theybelieve; but you must believe before you se (John11:40).I t is God dwelling in you decreeing a thing and declaring it done. I t is not one thing you can say or do

i f everything is right between you and Him, exc ptwait for the answer as He has commanded (1 Thes.5:17). The answer is purely because of grace. Many years in revival, as I tarried in God's pre encefor hour just before night ervice God would drop

the assurance into my sou] that 1 would have powerover all the power of the devil which would be atervice that night. As sure as we would obe the Spiritwe would see things come to pass.1 have a little book 1 prize highly. About 20 year

24 Lord, T each Us to Pray We Should Tarry Before God 25and write it down, putting the date at the bottom.Days, months, and sometimes years later, I wouldwrite the date it was answered.THE NEW TESTAMENT SAINTS WAITED ONGOD FOR THE ANSWER. Look into the life of Jesus.Look at Peter lying on th e house top looking intoheaven unti l God gave h im th e assurance (Acts 10).Ananias tarried before God unt il he received the assurance that Saul would receive the Holy Ghost andbe healed of blind eyes (Acts 9).I hardly think their wives had them running tothe cleaners; to the grocery store, carrying her tothe beauty shop, or to see he r kin-folk.

THE DEVIL WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU AREWASTING TIME. Bu t you would work until 12 :00O'clock i f you were making $5.00 per hour. Powerto bind Satan is worth more than $5.00 per hour.People spend time and money for books, and schooling to learn how God used Peter, Paul, and others.Bu t ye t they ac t as i f their time is more important thanthe t ime of Jesus, Peter, and John. Some go into the woods to "still hunt." After theyhave been wait ing for hours in silence a squir re l willcreep along (maybe). After in stillness and quietnesson the water's edge a fish will happen along (maybe). After waiting in God's presence for hours in silenceyou will hear th e voice of God or feel the answer(Not maybe).ONE FULL OF THE HOLY GHOST CAN LAYSILENT UNDER THE POWER. I used to go to sleeptrying to wait before God. I walked and washed myface trying to wake up. But an old minister told mewhat to do, just sleep.I would go ahead and sleep. I would not sleep overfive minutes (that is i f I wen t to bed as I should thenight before without wasting God's time). After Islept just enough to rest my mind and nerves I would

awake lying under God's power. I would sometimeslay there in a semi-sleep for hours, in the Spirit. S o ~ p -tures would dwell in my mind during that time. MaybeI would receive a message, or some Word of wisdomor Word of knowledge. Sometimes God would le t metune in on a future service seeing just what was goingto happen. Other times an outline of a book wouldappear before me. I would get up and write it.You can go to sleep driving a car. You stop andsleep and you will not sleep bu t a few minutes. Mostof the t ime you r eyes, mind, and nerves need rest.

After five minutes in silence you can drive for hours.Go to sleep a few minutes and rest your mind andnerves, and wake up under God's power refreshed. When I can't sleep at night I redeem the time pray-

ing. Before long Satan will not try to hinder me f romsleeping. We should "pray through" instead of "gettingthrough praying."Since Jesus and the Apostles tarried in God's presence until they could take the answer to the peoplethey could see miracles by just speaking th e word orpraying just short prayers. To the leper Jesus said, "I will, be thou clean."To the Centurion He said, "Go thy way, thy servantliveth."To the s to rm He said, "Peace, be st ill ."

To the blind man He said, "Thy faith hath madethee whole."

To the man with the palsey, "Arise, take up th ybed and go into thine house."

To the devils in the man in the tombs He said, " G o . ' ~To another, "Stretch forth th y hand."To the dead g irl Jesus said, "Damsel, I say untothee, arise."To a mother, "Woman, the devil has gorle out of thydaughter."

26 Lord, T each Us to PrayTo a dead man Jesus said, "Young man , I say unto

thee arise."To the ears of a deaf boy, "be opened."To a woman bowed over, "Woman, thou art loosedfrom thine infinnities."To ten lepers He said, "Go shew yourselves to thepriests."To Bartimaeus, "Receive th y sight, th y faith hath

made thee whole."To the Nobleman's son He said, "Go th y way th yson liveth."To a man born blind, "Go wash in the pool ofSiloam."To another Jesus commanded, "Lazareth. comeforth."

He only touched Peter's monther-in-Iaw and she washealed. He said we couId do the work He did if Hesent the Holy Ghost (John 14:12). He did all His workunder th e anointing of the Holy Ghost (Luke 4:18;Act 10:38)Peter said to the lame man, "Such as I have givethee ..."He said to a dead girl, "Tabitha, Arise."

Peter said to Aeneas, "Jesus Christ maketh theewhole ...."

Then they were healed in His shadow without himpraying or saying. .Paul commanded a lifetime cripple, "Stand up-righton thy feet."Picking up adead man he said, uHis life is in him."

He laid his hands on Publius and healed h im byGod's power. Then they were healed through handkerchiefs andaprons from his body.

Chapter vmTAKE THE ANSWER TO CHURCH

WITH YOUWE SHOULD HAVE THE VICfORY WHEN WE

GEl'TO CHURCH. I'll tell you the reason we haveseen thousands saved, filled, and healed. God le t ust ake the answer from the prayer closet to church. InGod's mind everything was planned and settled in advance. We were only led by the Spirit and saw thingstake place.

Paul did most of his praying at home. He prayedin tongues before he got to church (I Cor. 14:18-19).He that speaketh in tongues edifies himself. Prophecyedifies the Church (v. 4). Healing and miracles edifiesthe Church. But how can one edify the Church unlesshe is first edified?

Paul spake with tongues more than them all (I Cor.14:18). He had the gifts working when he arrived; hehad the saints doing the arne (v. 26) . ot just a few,but everyone of them, had the gifts working when theygot to church. They did not have to wait until thesinners left before they got the victory for themselves(v. 25).

I f Christians would pray in tongues at home regularly and live in the Spirit they would be well enough'lcquainted with the Spirit to know how to use tongueswhen they get to church.Since the Holy Ghost worked every th ing out in

Paul's life BEFORE HE GOT TO CHURCH HESELDOM HAD TO PRAY AF"l'ER HE ARRIVED.People were saved and healed as he laid hands onthem, or gave a command (Acts 14:10; 19:1-6, 11-12).Peter was not wasting time as he prayed on the

housetop. He could say to Cornelius, "I have broughtthe answer to your prayers." Instead of taking a ser-

28 Lord, Teach Us to Praymon out of his note book he just began to tell themwhat God had told him just before he came. While hewas yet speaking ALL of them received the HolyGhost before they went to the altar (Acts 10). (Aboutall the preacher i s good for is to stay out of t he wayof the Spirit and tell the people what God is doing andencourage them to be led by the Spirit.)After John lay in the Spiri t on the Lord' s day andreceived the answer he passed it on to us (Rev. 3and 5) .LONG PUBUC PRAYING IS NOT USUALLYSEEN IN THE BIBLE. Jesus even rebuked th e Phari-sees who stood and made long prayers to be heardof men.God did this work through (deacons,' Phillip andStephens (Acts 8 and 7) .Look what a short prayer Ananias prayed. Paul'seyes were opened. He received the Holy Ghost. Hehad prayed through before leaving home. (Acts 9:10-17). He was neither a (deacon' nor an Apostle.

The Church should be a place of deliverance forsoul and body. Jesus died on the cross, not for us to beorators or for Pentecostal preachers to prepare pro-grams for people's pleasure, bu t for their deliverance.I went to a house and found a gir l yelling, uLord, Ibelieve, 0 Lord, I do believe." After she said that aboutfifty times, I stopped her. I said, Uthat shows youdon't believe or you would no t be screaming withfear." I spoke to the disease. It left, and I went home.

Chapter IXYOU MAY HAVE WHAT YOU SAY

IF YOU HEAR THE VOICE OF GOD IN YOURPRAYER CLOSEr YOU MAY SAY WHAT HE SAYSAT CHURCH. You may have what you say (Mark11:23). Every moment o f your life you are sayingwhat God says or you are saying what the devil says.I f one verse is quickened to you by the Spirit then youcan say, "It is written."

When Abraham said, "God has given me a son,"even before he saw the son, he was saying what Godhad told him. When Joshua had the people to march seven dayssaying, "God has given us the city," they were only

saying what God said.I f this seems strange to you please read I Sam.14:10; I Kings 17:4; Judges 7:15, and hundreds' of

other scriptures it would take volumes to discuss. When Isaiah said, "with His stripes we are healed,"hundreds of years before Jesus died on th e cross hewas speaking what God said. The people were healed

then by the str ipes of Jesus (!sa. 53:5).Since God's Word is eternal it was jus t as t rue a mil-lion years ago or a million years from now, as itis now.Every good service at Church is set tl ed in the mindof God in advance BEFORE service. When you arriveat service you say what God has told you. I f God says,

UI am the Lord that healeth," look up and say, utheLord is the Lord that healeth."IF YOU ABIDE IN HIM AND HIS WORD ABIDES

IN YOU, YOU CAN ASK WHAT YOU WILL ANDRECEIVE IT (John 15:7). This does not mean thedead letter, bu t the word God spoke to you in your

She came forward and was healed instantly. In this meeting I told a lady who had not walkedin eighteen years to ri se and walk. She did, and is stillhealed. How many thousands of times things like these havetaken place just because God revealed them to us inmany hours of tarrying with the Spirit of God on usbefore service.I t i s no secre t what God can do. What He has donefor others He can do for us. He WILL do for us--if wespend time to "pray through."
