LORD OF THE FLIESJoe Colossale
Summary Plane crashes Group of boys are stranded on a
deserted island without any adults (6-12 yrs old)
They try to find a way to govern and organize the group of boys*
Rule and order eventually fails The boys turn into savages
Things you need to know Ralph – oldest/biggest boy on the island,
natural leader, gets elected the leader Jack – similar to Ralph but loses the
election and is angry Conch Shell – Major symbol in the book,
used as a horn to gather everyone and whoever holds the conch shell is the only one allowed to speak
#1) Common Goals During the chaos Ralph decided to use
the conch shell to organize the group It was just a conch shell but it worked
because the group believed in it and had common goals
In order for any group to be successful each member must communicate well and commit to the groups common goals
GOAL = ORGANIZE + SURVIVE
#2) Reaching Consensus Ralph was committed to reaching
consensus Page 22 – “Let’s have a vote.” – Ralph Gave one of the younger/quieter boys
the conch so he could speak to the group
In order to be a great leader and reach consensus you need to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions
#3) Tuckman’s Theory The group was forming in the beginning
when they first met They established some ground rules and
were heading into the right direction Then went into storming as soon as
small issues occurred Stayed in storming the entire book and
even regressed at the end
#4) Dangers of subgroups
Voted leader Order Civilized Productive Build huts and try
to get rescued
Not voted leader Desires power Strong willed Savage Violence Hunting
Ralph Jack
Competition between leaders = Formation of sub-groups and team cohesiveness falling apart
#5) Task Roles Ralph = Procedure Developer – Organizer
Coordinator –Clarifies and integrates ideas
Jack = Blocker – Interferes with progress Aggressor – Bullies and criticizes other boys
Piggy = Follower – Goes along with Ralph
Simon = Clarifier – provides reason between both parties (Jack & Ralph)
The Colossale Family We are a cohesive team Reach consensus Go through Tuckman’s Theory We each have Task Roles
The Colossale Family Ralph = Myself
Jack = Anthony My brother and I often disagree which
forms a competition and creates subgroups (Choose a side)
