Brazile WatchCourtesy of PRCA

With his second-place finish in the steerroping at the Pendleton (Ore.)Round-Up, two-time WorldChampion Trevor Brazile movedahead of Vin Fisher Jr. into secondplace in the world standings with$51,708. Brazile’s total earnings of$248,654 entering Omaha this week– where he is qualified in both teamroping and tie-down roping – giveshim what is close to an unassailablelead in the standings as he chases hisrecord eighth all-around gold buckle. His lead over second-place Curtis

Cassidy is more than $136,000, andnone of the top three challengers –Cassidy, Ryan Jarrett or Josh Peek – isgoing to qualify for the WranglerNational Finals Rodeo in more thanone event, while Brazile will makethe postseason in all three of hisevents. Still, because there is $5.875million in total prize money in LasVegas, it is mathematically possiblefor Brazile to be denied. It just isn’tvery likely. The maximum a competitor can

win at the NFR (according to a prizemoney breakdown that will not getfinal approval until later this week),is $220,030. To do that, a cowboywould have to win all 10 rounds ofhis event and the average. The NFRrecord for prize money won in asingle event is the $146,100 thatSherry Cervi earned in barrel racinglast December. Assume for a moment that

Brazile’s margin was roughly thesame after Omaha; that would meanthat even if the second place all-around hand set a record with$150,000 in earnings in his event atthe NFR, he would win the goldbuckle only if Brazile won less than$12,000 combined at the ClemMcSpadden National Finals SteerRoping in Guthrie, Oklahoma, andthe Wrangler NFR.

here? What will I be remembered for and what willbe my legacy? Will it be for my roping, because I wasin GQ magazine or for the posters and ads I’ve beenin? What’s important to me is to be remembered as agood Christian man who set a good example forthose I had influence over.

What’s your passion? We all need to be passionatein whatever we’re doing in life. Are you going afteryour passion – or is it a daydream? It would be atragedy for me to have my passion for roping and notget a chance to pursue it. I think there are manypeople without happiness because they’re caught upin the daily grind of life, trying to get by and are nottrue to their passion. I’m incredibly blessed to besuccessful at my passion.

Has anything changed me or knocked me offcourse in pursuit of my goals. The most important

A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love.

TM

With Stran’s busy schedule winding down towards thisyear’s WNFR, we gave him a break from this month’swriting duties. We dug up an older one he wrote back inFebruary 2008. We found it fitting as a great number ofropers kick off the 2011 USCRA season. WE would like tosay that’s to Stran for insight into the sport that is a usabletoday as it was when it was first published!

t start of each year I like to evaluate my goalsand priorities. I’ve heard that you have aseventy percent better chance of reaching

goals when you write them down. This self-evaluation is an on-going process; but each new yearI do some genuine soul searching, not just as a roper, but as a man. Keeping life balanced requires askingmyself some pretty deep and tough questions:

Will the world be a better place because I was

A

Page 23: Loops-October 2010

LOOPS MAGAZINE • 23

thing to me is having a balance. For instance, what if I were thefastest man alive in the arena from the time my feet hit theground until I threw my hands in the air. It wouldn’t be verybeneficial if I couldn’t score and catch. I’d rather be wellbalanced in all areas. There would be little reward in being thebest roper in the world and not have a family who loved you toshare it with.

How do you overcome adversity? Does it make you better orset you back. If you’re in a hole and someone throws dirt on you– do you use that dirt to take a step up – or do you let that dirtcover you up? Enjoy every stage of life and when you’restruggling embrace it and know you’ll be better from thechallenge. You’ll not only survive but you’ll improve from theexperience. Find your weak spots and work on it. Acknowledgeand attack it and turn it into a positive.

Who are you allowing to speak into your life? Who and whatare you listening to? Are they speaking good and positive thingsor are they speaking deadly negatives? God will put everyone inyour life that needs to be there, but it’s our responsibility to putthem in the right place. I have no room for negatives becausewhat you take in will come out. I ask myself if the people I’mallowing to speak in my life are telling me the things I need tohear to get where I need to go. Have I told the people whoinfluence my life how much I love and appreciate them?

If these questions seem thought provoking and deep, it’sbecause they’re supposed to be. Most importantly, just be real.

God bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

Seed Sowing Principles

Seeds sown are seeds that are grown. Depending on when, where, or how, you sow seeds in your life, the reaping ofthose same seeds is a law that God has put in our world

from the beginning of time.We always find time to do the things that are important to us.

In the process of sowing seeds, we make decisions and choicesconcerning what is really important to us. In many people’slives, priorities are what determine the investment of a seed. That being relationships with our spouse, our children, extendedfamily, and friends. If your marriage is important to you, yourpriority according to scripture should be to seek God first, andHe will help you to be a good spouse. The same applies to beinga good father, mother, grandparent, friend, even employee.Matthew 6:33 says “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and hisrighteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

I was at a roping last night, and I made the statement ‘thatcalf didn’t run as hard as I thought he was going to’,

consequently, I broke the barrier. The truth ofthe matter is that the calf was just being a calfand I was being the one that had messed upby miscalculating. Too many times we blameothers, friends, family, sometimes evenanimals for our lack of discipline in sowinggood seeds, whether in the practice pen, inour family, as well as with our job.

When we realize that all wisdom comesfrom above, we will understand the value ofsowing good seeds. In order for a seed to growyou must be willing to put that seed in theground and turn lose of it with your hand. Toomany times, we are unwilling to turn lose ofthe seed, or we will want to dig that seed backup, just to see what is going on. Faith willassure us that God is in control and that wewill reap the crop that we have sown if wewill be faithful to Him.

his month looks to be aturning point for the USCRA.The 2011 season is underway

and ropers everywhere are gearingup for the change the associationis offering. Look back a few pagesand see the advertising on the firsttwo events the USCRA is part ofthis year.

The Roland Reid Memorial willbe the first of many events roperswill have a chance to attendthroughout this season. Thisevent, which will play out in FortWorth at the Cowtown Coliseumwill not only offer a high payoutformat with thousands of dollarsadded, but there will also be a 1-horse trailer awarded to theHigh-Point roper of the weekend, not to mention a chance to be part

by Ryan Davis

T of a great annual memorial event. The Roland Reid Memorial will

kick off the first weekend ofNovember and in December, theUSCRA is heading to Stephenvilleand the Lonestar arena for thesecond of this year’s events. TheUSCRA Christmas Bonus Ropingwill have lots of ways for ropersto win part of the huge pot ofbonus money. There will be bonuscalves to rope, multiple Averagebonuses, high money bonuses, fast time bonus challenges andlots more. The December 10-12roping will host a slew of waysfor ropers to fill their pockets andhave a great time doing it.

These are only the first twoevents of the season and theUSCRA looks to be holding

nothing back. They both haveunique qualities and ways to makethem fun and exciting. Moreimportantly, they are filled withways to win!

Looking at these events makesme think of a man that passed thispast year who was instrumental inthe growth of team roping. Noteveryone agreed with the formatsand pizzazz that Booger Barterbrought to the arena, but hisalmost circus atmosphere andgreat prize ropings made him asuperstar. I believe this is sort ofthe same avenue the USCRA isbringing out. Maybe not to theextreme that Booger did – ThankGod – but the excitement, bigpayouts and fun is something Ibelieve every event, whether it’scalf roping, team roping oranything type of rodeo sport needsand what the USCRA is bringingto the table for the 2011 season.

Until next time – I wish you allthe best of luck!

THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fi bers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today.

With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.
