“I have been dealing with and feeding roping calvesfor 40 years and I have never seen a feed work aseffectively and quickly as Precision Calf Feeds. Noother feed compares. It keeps calves healthy.”I train horses for a living, specializing in calf ropinghorses. . . so I keep lots of calves to work these horseson. I give roping lessons as well, so I need to keep mycalves well in order to do my work. Precision Feeddoes it for me.

Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses andpractice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or

any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped andreleases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are springloaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs aremade from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.

Series was created to provideopportunities for our members,”said PRCA Commissioner KarlStressman, “and the Finals inWaco have been a big part of that.We have had some real successstories there, and we look forwardto continuing our relationshipwith the Heart O’ Texascommittee for years to come.”All PRCA rodeos with added

money of $30,000 or less – morethan 400 rodeos this year – areautomatically part of the AllAmerican ProRodeo Series and theFinals in Waco are a big incentivefor up-and-coming professionalswhile also helping rodeocommittees increase participationthroughout the year.“We take pride in the role we

play in helping contestants andcommittees,” said Wes Allison,President/CEO of the Heart O’Texas Fair & Rodeo. “From ourstandpoint, the format fits so wellwith our (Heart O’ Texas Fair),

and we are excited to continueour collaboration with the PRCA.It’s been great for our fans andgreat for our committee.”The final round of this year’s

Theteam roping was won by 2011PRCA/Resistol Rookie of the YearHeader Joshua Torres and hisbrother Jonathan. “It gives guys like me, who are juststarting out and can’t go to some ofthe bigger rodeos a chance to learnand get better and compete at abig-money rodeo like Waco. Wesand his committee do a great job. They get great stock and treateverybody well. It’s a real gooddeal. It helped me out a bunch. The money I earned (at Waco) willnow get me into some of the bigwinter rodeos coming up.”Great American Country’s

tephenville, Texas and theLone Star Arena were host tothe 15th USCRA National

Showdown Finals. This year withonly 11 regular season ropings, the Showdown positions werehard to come by. Counting the 10positions from the semi-finals,there could be no more than 36ropers in each of the “Showdown”Finals. Fewer numbers in theFinals made it easier to sort and

even set calves and it also madefor a fast, fun roping.Special thanks goes out to

Rattler Ropes, Martin Saddlery,Hard 8 BBQ, and StephenvilleChamber of Commerce for theirsponsorship and help in makingthe 15th Finals a success. Also, once again the facilities and crewof the Lone Star Arena were great.Arguably one of the best

performances of the week was

displayed by 13-year-old WestynHughes, of Caldwell, Texas. Hisperformance in the short roundof the #1 roping was a great oneby any calf roping fan’s standard.Westyn was high man backwhich made him the last roperto go in the short round. He hadover 11 seconds to tie his calfdown and secure the win. Whatdoes he do? Well, he goes outand ties the fastest calf of theroping with an 8.47. This gavehim a 38.66 on four head and apayday worth $2,175.Garrett Rose came to the EE

Showdown Finals looking forredemption. Less that 24 hoursbefore the EE Finals Garrett washigh-man back in the EE semisand failed to connect with hisrope. However, he got a chanceat redemption when he was highcall back position once again inthe EE Finals. This time he madeit work and took home thevictory of the EE. The McKinney,Texas calf roper was 49.62 onfour calves and won $1,705.The slimmest margin of

victory for the week was Norman Robert’s victory in the 00 roping. The Huntsville, Texasroper put up a 46.65 on fourcalves, which was only .04 secondahead of second place. Normancame from the second call backposition to take the victory and $2,005.After going over 14 seconds on

his first calf, Don Coffel had toplay catch-up, and that he did.The Iredell, Texas roper thenproceeded to go 9, 7, and 8seconds on his next three runs. This gave Don a 39.55 on fourhead and the victory of the #2roping. Coming from the third callback position, Don took the winand $1,765. Justin Maass, of Giddings,

Texas, only had to beat out sixropers to win the Open Division, but it might not have matteredhow many ropers there were withthe performance he displayed. With a 35.27 on four calves, Justinwon $2,040. He won or placed in3 of the 4 rounds.Salado, Texas breakaway roper,

Samantha Chick put on a solidperformance to take the win inthe breakaway division. She was

the only roper to successfully ropeall four calves. Her time of 15.32seconds took the Average and apaycheck worth $878.Congratulations to all the

winners. Each winner took home

a Martin Saddlery made saddleand a Wild West buckle alongwith their cash. Come rope withthe USCRA in 2012 and see if youcan be a part of the USCRANational Showdown Finals. K

Don’t Risk a Case

of West nile ViRus

Question: I haven’t heard muchabout West Nile Virus lately.Should I still be vaccinating for it?

Answer: West Nile is apotentially deadly virus thatcauses encephalitis orinflammation of the brain.Transmitted by mosquitoes, thedisease threatens horses, birds andhumans. Since first being reportedin the United States in 1999, morethan 24,000 horses have beendiagnosed with West Nile virus.Although the risk of getting thedisease is lower now than it usedto be, most likely due to theincrease in vaccinated horses andnaturally acquired immunity, WestNile virus continues to be a threatto horses.Because there is no known

treatment for the disease and oneout of three horses that gets sickfrom West Nile virus dies or mustbe euthanized, the American

Association of Equine Practitioners(AAEP) continues to recommendvaccination. All horses should berevaccinated annually.RECOMBITEK® Equine WNVvaccine from Merial offersprotection against West Nile and is available through yourveterinarian. In addition to vaccinating, you

can help reduce your horse’schance of contracting WNV bylimiting his exposure tomosquitoes. Because mosquitoescan breed in any standing waterthat lasts more than four days, consider adding these steps toyour barn cleanup chores:

• Turn over wheelbarrows, waterbuckets and wading pools whennot in use. • Thoroughly clean livestockwatering troughs and bucketsregularly. • Remove any potential mosquitobreeding areas, such as trash can

lids, pots, discarded tires, etc. • Drill holes in the bottom ofcontainers left outside. • Do not allow water to stagnate in birdbaths. • Clean clogged roof gutters on anannual basis.

While the best way to helpprevent equine diseases like WestNile virus is to vaccinate, horseowners can also take advantage ofMerial’s new free “OutbreakAlert” program, which will tellthem about the presence ofconfirmed equine disease in theirarea. Those who sign up atwww.outbreak-alert.com willreceive text and/or e-mailnotification of disease threatswithin a 250-mile radius of anyZIP code provided. The site alsoincludes maps showing thepresence of disease throughout thecountry and general informationabout equine diseases.

About RECOMBITEKRECOMBITEK Equine WNV vaccines are

made with a technology that allows thevaccine to stimulate a fast, strong immuneresponse in your horse. RECOMBITEKrWNV-EWT is the only combination vaccinethat uses advanced technology to helpprovide convenient protection against WestNile virus, while also helping to protectagainst Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE),Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE) andtetanus.

TES!!AATDNEW

ot long ago my dad and Ibuilt a water gap out onthe ranch. Afterwards my

dad said, “Well that’s probablythe nicest water gap no one willever see.” As I took a picture withmy phone, I said, “Dad, you don’trealize how many people will seethis on Facebook.” We workedhard and in a day’s time builtsomething that will last for yearsto come.

A few days later I was inOmaha, Nebraska, for a speakingengagement during the tour

finale. Afterwards I was talkingto a couple of businessmen whowere not rodeo people, but bothhad pretty amazing stories.

The first guy happened to beat a rodeo with his smalldaughter who wanted to enterthe Mutton Busting. Neither wasdressed in cowboy clothing andwere a little out of place. Withno prior experience, the daddidn’t have much advice for hisdaughter. The Tie Down ropingimmediately followed theMutton Busting and there was a

calf roper who noticed the littlegirl looking nervous so he struckup a conversation with her. Theyvisited for ten minutes or so andhe assured her that he gotnervous, too. Ironically, she wonthe Mutton Busting and her dadwas surprised to see that calfroper come congratulate her. Hestuck around to watch the TieDown roping. As the announcerintroduced their new friend, hewas surprised to find that FredWhitfield was an eight-timeworld champion.

The other businessman in ourlittle group exclaimed, “I have aFred Whitfield story too!” A friendof his was roping in Salinas,California, and had made it to theshort round. Unfortunately thehorse he had been riding was sentto another rodeo before hand. Hewas looking for a mount. Therearen’t many places as hard on acalf horse as Salinas andrepeatedly he was turned down.He then asked Fred Whitfield whoreplied, “You bet, get on.”

The three biggest athleticprofessions are football, baseballand basketball. These professionalathletes usually have agents andmarketing people that seize anyopportunity to promote them. Ifthey make an appearance at ahospital or charity, you can betthere are photographers on hand.In both of these stories there wasno photo op or agent watchingFred. He was acting on his own, from his heart.

Fred’s competitive drive hasbeen the force behind his morethan three million dollars incareer earnings to make him oneof only three people to everaccomplish this. What I wantpeople to realize is that there aremany more stories like this, notonly about Fred, but most all fulltime rodeo guys. Many of whichnever become public knowledge.

Fred Whitfield made quite animpression and created somegreat memories for those people.

And much like the water gapwe built out on the ranch, notmany people get to hear aboutit – but a good job was donejust the same.

We still have some spotsavailable at my Tie Downschool on November 19 and 20at my house in Childress. If youare interested, call me at 806-570-8611 or email me [email protected].

omething I always hated to hearwhen I was in school was that I had

answered a question incorrectly. I would liketo say that didn’t happen very often, but thatwould not be true. In Isaiah 44 there is aninteresting story about a man who cut down atree. With part of the wood he made a fireand warmed himself; with part of the woodhe cooked his dinner; and with part of thewood from the same tree he made an idol. Wein America would like to believe that we aretoo sophisticated for idols. I would submit toyou today that there are many things that area blessing to us. Hopefully we use thosethings correctly the majority of the time. Inour modern day, technology has grown at anamazing rate. We have cell phones andcomputers, we have pickups with computersin them and we have I-pads. So many of thesethings can be a tremendous help to us to getthrough life. However, when we use theblessings that God has given us incorrectlythey can easily become an idol for us.Something that God intended to be a blessingif used incorrectly, can inadvertently become acurse. We can communicate with one anotherthrough the Internet and even read the Bibleor have the Bible read to us online. With thesame computer we can view pornography, have inappropriate communication to thepoint where what has been blessed nowbecomes a curse. Marriages end in divorce, children are ignored, and lives aremarginalized all because of a choice to makesomething that could be blessed into thatwhich is cursed. Marriages, children andrelationships can be a tremendous blessingbut when husbands abuse their spouse, wives

cheat on their husbands and children rebelagainst their parents because of a lack ofteaching those blessings become a curse. Thecorrect use of God’s blessings is to bless/helpus but when they become a curse it’s easy forthat curse to become an idol that turns into anaddiction. This may sound far fetched to you,but almost anything that we enjoy, if weabuse that gift, it can actually become a curseto us and rob us of our destiny. Correct? Orincorrect? Your life is answering that questionfor you.

Isaiah 44:13-17 TNIV“The carpenter … cuts down cedars, or

perhaps took a cypress or oak. He let it growamong the trees of the forest, or planted apine, and the rain made it grow. It is used asfuel for burning; some of it he takes andwarms himself, he kindles a fire and bakesbread. But he also fashions a god andworships it; he makes an idol and bows downto it. Half of the wood he burns in the fire;over it he prepares his meal, he roasts hismeat and eats his fill. He also warms himselfand says, “Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.”From the rest he makes a god, his idol; hebows down to it and worships. He prays to itand says, “Save me! You are my god!”

ave you checked out the new USCRA Facebook page? Wow!

What a cool page for calf ropers. Lanhamhas stepped it up and you can bet you willbe able to find out more about the largestcalf roping association faster and easierthan ever before. The USCRA will bedropping information on the page to keepropers up to date on events and thingsconcerning the sport and the association.Additionally, the page will no doubt giveropers a place to speak up about concerns, express their excitement and carry onabout things of interest for calf ropers. I hope you take a look, like the page and chime in occasionally.

If you don’t Facebook – well, watch theUSCRA website, that is the next thing ontheir list to do and if it is anything like theFacebook page, it will be pretty cool.Lanham said he has hired a new person tohelp out in his marketing department andit looks like he knows his stuff. I havealready viewed some great calf ropingvideos, checked out some great photosonline and I think the new page will helpkick this season off in great fashion.

Although the new Facebook page isexciting and I am anticipating the samewith the new look of the USCRA website,it may not be as electrifying as the recentUSCRA Finals. Saddles, cash, prizes andlots of happy ropers rolled out of theevent. Although it took place just beforethe last issue rolled off the printingpresses, making it a little bit of pasthistory already, if you were there you

know how dynamic it was and if youmissed it, don’t do it again this seasonbecause things are already shaping up tobe bigger and better than ever.

I recently talked to Lanham and he isreally excited about the new season. Healway looks forward to the new seasonabout this time of year, but seems to beeven more so this year than I have seen inthe past. I am not sure if it is the changesto the formats, or the recent success of theUSI, Jr. event that happened in earlySeptember, or just the Facebook thing, butsomething has him energized like I havenever seen.

This leads me to something that I thinkwill happen. Excitement is contagious andI have seen people succeed in life justbecause they got turned on aboutsomething. I believe Lanham’s excitementis just like this and will spread like awildfire across the roping community.Shoot – just talking to him fired me up andI am eager to get a jump on the 2012season and help out all I can.

Looking ahead at this year’s events, ropers will have a chance to jump in onthe USCRA enthusiasm as well. Lots ofropings are scheduled and I bet a fewmore will be added throughout the year.Things are popping and if you are young, old or in between and love to rope calves, the USCRA has a place for you.

Join up, practice up and enjoy the sportthis year.

THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fi bers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today.

With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.
