Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses andpractice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or
any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped andreleases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are springloaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs aremade from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.

Brazile Nearly Goes Wire to Wire for 15th TitleTrevor Brazile’s final run at the Clem McSpadden
National Finals Steer Roping wasn’t his fastest of thetwo-day, 10-round championship on November 11-12at the Lazy E Arena. It wasn’t the prettiest, either. Butthat 13.7-second sprint to the finish was efficient andaccomplished a major goal for Brazile’s 2011 campaign, his third Steer Roping World Championship and the15th Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association WorldTitle in his stellar career.“I owe a lot of that success to San Antone,” Brazile
said of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, whichinitiated steer roping into its competition this seasonand provided one of the biggest purses of the season;Brazile won $24,060 there. “That was a huge win forme. I knew it going in. I prepared for that like I woulda National Finals.”In fact, it was 25 percent of Brazile’s earnings this
season, but it wasn’t the only win. He also earned SteerRoping titles at All-American ProRodeo Finals (Waco,Texas), Lea County Fair & PRCA Rodeo (Lovington,N.M.), Beef Empire Days PRCA Rodeo (Garden City,Kan.), Will Rogers Stampede (Claremore, Okla.), SanAntonio Stock Show & Rodeo, SandHills Stock Show &Rodeo (Odessa, Texas), Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer DaysRodeo and the Butterfield Stage Days (Bridgeport,Texas).“I like to win every time I get a chance, therefore I
don’t leave everything on one run,” said Brazile, 35, ofDecatur, Texas. “I like to get my job done ahead ofschedule. “Steer roping’s taught me to win moneywhen you can, because there are more variables in thisevent than anything.”One of the variables was Two-Time Reigning World
Champion Rocky Patterson of Pratt, Kan., who inchedhis way into the World Standings lead by winning theninth go-round on Saturday night. After struggling tojust two qualified runs during the first five rounds on
Friday night, Patterson placed in four of five roundsSaturday, including the ninth-round victory. Thatpushed him ahead of Brazile by $173 heading into thefinal run of the 2011 season.Patterson was not in the average race – he finished
ninth in the average with a cumulative total of 87.3seconds on seven qualified times – so in order to claimhis third straight Montana Silversmiths gold buckle, theKansan had to win the go-round and watch Brazile fallto fifth in the aggregate race. Brazile was the second-to-last cowboy to go, just ahead of Patterson. When heraised his hands in the air and called for time, theWorld Championship was Brazile’s. “It just made it that much sweeter,” said Brazile, of
Decatur, Texas. “There are thingsyou remember, and I’ll remember that run because
of that race, whereas you don’t remember it when itdoesn’t come down to (that).“When your heart’s not that heavy on your last one,
it doesn’t stick with you as long.”Most of the two-day championship didn’t sit pretty
for Two-Time World Champion Scott Snedecor, but hegot the job done the hard way. Snedecor, ofFredericksburg, Texas, was the only cowboy in the 15-man field to rope and tie down all 10 steers, claimingthe aggregate title. It’s the second such award Snedecorhas earned in his career.“Out of the 10 steers, I probably had seven of them
that kicked me or tried to get up,”he said. “These steers were really good two weeks
ago. I was on the wrong end of them.”Still, there is a nice new piece of hardware hanging
from his belt.“A (NFSR) average title is the second best thing a guy
can get in his career,” Snedecorsaid. “Other than a gold buckle, that’s the next step
down. I’m fortunate enough to have two gold bucklesand two average buckles.”In addition, Montana Silversmiths also created Go-
Round Buckles for cowboys who excelled throughoutthe weekend. Snedecor failed to place in any round andhis $15,231 was nice. But it was far from the biggest. Infact, six cowboys earned more money in Guthrie thatweekend, led by Chance Kelton of Mayer, Ariz., whopocketed $28,615. Kelton placed in five go-rounds,including the win in the third, and finished second inthe average race to Snedecor.Early on in the championship, it looked as though
J.P. Wickett of Sallisaw, Okla., had a bulls-eye paintedon the Average Title. Wickett won the first round witha 10.5-second run, and then finished second in the

second (11.0) and third in the third (12.0). Then in atough pen, he slugged through a 13.2-second run towin the fourth round. In all, he won $17,308 onopening night. All was great until that fifth go-round,when the steer got up after the trip.“That ticks me off,” Wickett said. “I really wanted to
rope all five head tonight. I got in a little bit of a hurry, and I rushed the trip. That was my fault.” In a raremoment of success on Friday, Patterson won the secondgo-round with a 10.4-second run. That $5,077 checkcame in handy at theend, where Pattersonfinished second in theworld standings with$87,642. Where othersfaltered, first-timer KimZiegelgruber of nearbyEdmond, Okla.,succeeded. He won thefifth round and placedfive others. He finishedfourth in the averagerace and earned $19,192through the weekend.“I drew just right for
that last steer,”Ziegelgruber toldMarvin Olberding ofProRodeo Sports News.“I had the opportunity to free this horse up, and thatwas perfect for that last one. That steer kind of sat upwhen I roped him. I was nervous, because I put a wrapand a half on him.”Chet Herren of Pawhuska, Okla., came out on
Saturday night with a vengeance, trying to make up fora rough opening night, where he had qualified times onjust two runs and failed. He won the sixth go-round in10.3 seconds, and then earned another MontanaSilversmiths Go-Round Buckle in the seventh when hebested his traveling partners, Patterson and CodyScheck, in the fastest of the competition.Patterson had set the standard early with a 10.8, but
Scheck went seven players later and scored a 9.6-second run. Herren, the next cowboy on the list, bettered that mark but one tenth of a second to takethe round victory. Herren placed in five rounds andwon $20,385. Scheck, though, finished strong. Hescored just one qualified time on opening night, but hemade up for it on Saturday, placing in three rounds andwinning the other two – well, he split the eighth-roundvictory with Vin Fisher Jr. (10.0) and won the 10thround in 10.4. Fisher, who entered the ClemMcSpadden as a contender for the world title, placed injust three go rounds. Those are the breaks atchampionship events.“A little bit too conservative, but in the end, it’s all
about the ‘W,’” said Brazile, who has won fourMontana Silversmiths Gold Buckles in less than a year –he won the Triple Crown in December 2010 with the
All-Around, Tie-Down Roping and Team Roping-Heading Championships, then added the Steer RopingTitle this November. “You’ve got to do what you’ve gotto do (to win). There are times of year when it pays tobe reckless, and this was not one of those times.“It’s hard knowing that you’re losing ground. It’s
hard not to listen to that, but you can’t get caught up inthat. You go to battle in the go-rounds with guys thataren’t in the average.” As in years past and just like theWrangler National Finals Rodeo, the event will
consisted of 10 go-roundsto determine the PRCAWorld Champion and thefinal 2011 PRCA SteerRoping World Standings. The Lazy E Arena wasbuilt to host the NFSR in1984 by E.K.Gaylord II. The Lazy E
hosted this worldchampionship event from1984 until 2000. Aftereight years, first inAmarillo followed byHobbs, the event movedback “home” to the LazyE. In 2009, the Oklahomastate Legislatureunanimously passed a
resolution to change the name of the event to honorthe late Clem McSpadden, who served for many yearsin the Oklahoma Legislature and the U.S. House ofRepresentatives while also building a reputation as oneof the best announcers in rodeo history. He worked thesteer roping finals a record 27 times. McSpadden wasalso known as the “Voice of the Lazy E”. A portion ofthe proceeds from the 2011 Clem McSpadden NationalFinals Steer Roping were donated to the NationalCowboy and Western Heritage Museum in OklahomaCity and the Clem McSpadden Endowed Chair atOklahoma State University. The Lazy E is proud tosupport these institutions for Western preservation. The 2011 Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer

105ropers came totry their luckand show their
skills at the Historic CowtownColiseum at the Ft. WorthStockyards where the RolandReid Memorial was held. Theconditions in the small coliseumallowed little room for error andkept the roping very interesting. The big winner on Sunday was
Bill Sharber of Konowa,Oklahoms. Bill won the #1roping by less than 1 tenth of asecond, but it was good enoughfor first and $900. Sharber wasthe only average winner of theday that placed in two of thethree rounds. His total time onthree calves was 31.47.The 2011 Roland Reid
Memorial roping marked the firstroping of the 2012 USCRAseason and the first roping tohave a 00 Select division. BodieRead of Aubrey, Texas, is the firstroper to win a USCRA 00 Selectroping. With a time of 37.16 onthree calves, Bodie never placed
in a round, but the average winwas his along with $635.The small coliseum does not
give EE ropers much time to getready but Will Parker ofStephenville, Texas, made it workto his benefit. Will’s time of 47.10on three head was good enoughfor $615 and a win that he hasworked hard for. It was a finemoment for me to take a picturewith Will and his new buckle.Well you don’t see it very
often but the 00 roping ended ina tie. Glenn Conner and DakotaFelton both tied their three calvesin 43.92 seconds. Dakota of Mt.Home, Texas, won $482 for hisefforts. Glenn Conner of Evadale,Texas, won $660 by placing in around on his way to the average win. Martin Poindexter of Seymor,
Texas was the high man back inthe #2 roping, and he took careof business with a strong run anda victory. Martin was 33.64 onthree calves and placed in oneround on his way to the win.
For his efforts Martin took home $655.

The International EquineBusiness Association (IEBA) is anew association that is anoutcome of the alliances thatUnited Horsemen has formed with
hundreds of entities like theNational Tribal HorseCoalition, Charros FederationUSA, horse councils, production agriculture, petanimal and animalentertainment groups, as well
as international partners like theHorse Welfare Alliance of Canada. The Association is eager to workwith equine businesses, organizations, state, tribal, andfederal agencies to maximize this opportunity.
“We could not be morepleased,” says IEBA U.S co-chairSue Wallis, “and grateful to ourmany partners and supporters toonce again have a clear path toincrease the welfare of horses, reinvigorate the devastated horserelated economy, and promote theethical, appropriate use of horsesthat will be welcomed by aworldwide and domestic market, create jobs, and preserve our

beloved horseback Americanculture for our children andgrandchildren. The nowdevastated horse industry looksforward to the day when we can once again contribute morethan $1.9 Billion dollars in taxrevenue nationwide from anindustry that prior to 2007 was a$102 Billion dollar sector ofanimal agriculture...to once again supporting 1.4 Million full-time jobs working with horses everyday.”
The tide turned for the horseindustry when Congress receiveda report from their research officethat looked into the effect of theclosure of the U.S. horseprocessing facilities. ThatGovernment Accountability Office (GAO) report, HORSEWELFARE: Action Needed toAddress UnintendedConsequences of DomesticSlaughter Cessation, documentsthe decline in horse welfare, andthe negative impacts on theoverall equine economy as a directresult of the loss of a humaneoption for otherwise unwanted, unusable, excess horses.
Because of the back-doorexclusionary efforts of theHumane Society of the UnitedStates (HSUS), Congress adoptedthe first of these damagingappropriations riders in 2005, withmore added in 2007 that haveprevented any facilities fromoperating in the forty-six statesthat do not have state lawpreventing them.
“That roadblock is nowremoved,” noted Wallis, “now weshift our focus to resumingprofitable legitimate businesses inthe horse industry, and a return ofnormal markets for horses atevery level, and every sector ofthe diverse horse world.”
The IEBA is positioned topromote and encourage equine
harvesting businesses that are heldto high humane handling and foodsafety standards, in order to bringquality products to a vibrant andviable worldwide market. IEBAwill be providing legal defense, political advocacy, businessconsulting, technologicalsolutions, and more for all aspectsof the equine industry.
United Horsemen is a 100%volunteer grassroots nationwideorganization, joined by practicallyevery animal agriculture and horseindustry organization in thecountry to advocate for humaneand regulated horse processing toend the unnecessary and wastefulsuffering of horses. ell, it is a couple of days away fromThanksgiving which means the
Holidays are officially here. What a time ofyear! For me it means I got through thebusiest time of year here in the office and Ican look forward to relaxing a little bit withfamily and friends. I have always enjoyed theHolidays and even more so over the pastseveral years now that I have kids. It seemseverything gets a little merrier around thistime of year.
Thanksgiving is the time of year to givethanks for what we have and I guess that iswhy it is followed by Christmas, so we canask Santa Clause for the things we don’t. Just kidding! See I am already getting in the Holiday spirit and yep, things are getting merrier!
Now on to our favorite subject, tie-downroping and what’s happening in the rodeoworld. It is an exciting time of year for thesport as well. The National Finals Rodeo isjust around the corner and, of course, everyone will be tuned in to see if Tuf cankeep his lead and win his first of what I thinkwill be many world championships. I am surethe action will be as exciting as it always isand look forward to riding my reclineralongside this year’s contestants in all of the events.
It looks like the USCRA is off to a goodstart. The Roland Reid Memorial kicked offthe 2012 season in pretty good shape and Iam thinking the Turkey Roping next weekought to attract a lot of attention from calfropers. With 77% payback, I bet they comeout of the woodwork for a shot at the money.
Although the past couple of years have
been tough on events throughout thecountry, not only calf roping events, butrodeo events in general, I think they areon the increase once again. Looking atsome of the local associations around myneck of the woods, there is an excitementstirring and many who have been facedwith the burdens of the overall economyare finally getting back in the swing ofthings and finding ways to get back on theroad to local and national events.
Looking at the whole picture, the trickledown effect from companies who can nolonger support rodeo events in the form ofsponsorships due to the bad economy andthe fact that the price of inflation hasoutpaced the overall income of families, both have played a huge role inassociation success. I applaud those whocontinue to host events and know that theheyday of yesterday when producers couldactually make money is gone and most ofthem are struggling to keep events alive.
I have hopes for a plan that I aminvolved in that will help smaller amateurassociations all across the country. Fromthe USCRA to rodeo events and prettymuch everything in between, I hope wecan get things going that will help buildevents everywhere. I will keep you postedon anything that comes up. I am excitedabout this opportunity and the positiveoutcome it can bring.
Until next month, I hope you had agreat Thanksgiving and I wish everyone ofyou a Merry Christmas!

Last month I wrote aboutpreparing for the matchroping against Cody Ohl at
the San Angelo Roping Fiesta.Roping fifteen calves weighing theneighborhood of 300 lbs. isnothing short of an endurancerace and it was a great test for thephysical conditioning I have donefor the last year. I was excited thatthe calves really didn’t give memuch trouble.
With big calves in a rocky arenaI decided to ride my backup horse.Mid-way through the match I hada decent lead and things startinggoing better for Cody. Then, myeleventh calf was about to getaway and when I roped him, myloop bounced off his shoulder andcame off. It was just one of thosethings that happen and I wouldn’thave done it any differently.
When it got down to the lastcalf I had to be twelve to win thematch. For just one run, and acrucial one, I decided to ride mymare. Though I saw the same out
on the barrier as I had all day, mymare leaves so much harder thatwe broke it and ultimately lost the match.
It would have been great to winthe match but I’m more thansatisfied with my performance andstamina in the roping itself. In lessthan ideal conditions I lived up tomy own expectations. If my lifewere all tied up in what goes onat the end of a rope and when Ithrow my hands up, then it wouldbe hard, if not impossible to havea fulfilled life – because you’d liveand die with each run.

ohn 3:16 For God so loved the world that Hegave His only begotten Son that whosoever
believeth in Him should not perish, but haveeverlasting life.
Without a doubt, my favorite holidaythroughout the whole year is Christmas. Manypeople get weary of all the hustle and bustle ofChristmas, but I really enjoy it. The gift that wasgiven to us 2000 years ago is a continualreminder that it truly is better to give than toreceive. As we approach the Christmas season, Ican’t help but think of the wonderful gifts that Ihave been given. I have been given the gift of awonderful wife and two beautiful kids who loveGod even more than they love their Daddy. (Itaught them to do that!) Things and stuff arewonderful to unwrap at Christmas time, butplease understand that your greatest gifts will not be under your tree. They will be in yourheart and in your life and in the very air that you breathe.
If you think that this cowboy preacher is alittle bit mushy about Christmas, you are right. I have never been one to leave a gift under the tree. So I am extremely blessed to know that God’s gift of His only begotten Son is a gift that will allow me to live with Him foreternity because I made the simple choice toreceive that gift. Always remember that Jesusreally is the reason for the season and that wisemen still seek Him.
God Bless,Pastor Randy Weaver

The Christmas Gift
J
Grantlin Rice, known as one of the greatest sportscommentators, would always close his show withthis statement that pretty much sums up my feelings,“And when that one great scorer comes to markagainst your name, he marks not whether you wonor lost, but how you played the game.”
A member of my church recently wrote somethingI want to share with you. Anyone who competes – atanything – can benefit from these words.
A Fine Line
Confidence is a great attribute to possessGod given to many, self developed by othersIt produces a high unmatched by anyThe effects almost drug-likeSought after, most likely by everyone
But like drugs, overdose can be fatalArrogance steps in and destroys the character of confidence
Being overconfident is as dangerous as lackingSuch a fine line to walk
So walk hand in hand with God
