A Children’s Cottage Society success story… In our last 2 newsletters we introduced you to Children’s Cottage Society, the charity of choice selected to benefit all our building events this year. Their mission is to prevent harm and neglect to all children and to build strong families through support services, respite programs and crisis nurseries. The story below is one of many Children’s Cottage success stories… Sarah is a 22 year old mother of two. We first met her when her son Justin was six and her daughter Kirsten was one. Her husband had abandoned the family when Kirsten was three months old and Sarah was left to parent alone, with no support. However, she was determined to support her family without help. She found a roommate who was also a single mom and they provided each other with childcare so the other could work. Soon though, Justin began to resent sharing his mom. Poor behavioural issues he had demonstrated since his dad left became increasingly pronounced. Sarah tried implementing time outs, removed privileges and even resorted to Tabasco sauce on her son’s tongue in an attempt to control his foul language – and it was at this point that she began to fear she may harm Justin. In desperation, she called the Distress Centre and was referred to our Crisis Nursery. Once she realized we might be able to help her, she finally accepted that even the strongest parent needs help sometimes. After that, we were able to help Sarah connect with housing supports, parenting resources and child care support. She found a good home for her family and secured a good paying job. She also discovered her son had severe ADHD and has learned how to parent him more effectively. She credits her success to the initial break and the support she received at the Children’s Cottage. For more information, visit the Children’s Cottage website at www.childrenscottage.ab.ca. Farmers Market a ‘fulfilling’ experience Pack your eco friendly bags and head on down to the Farmer’s Market on Wednesday July 24 from 10 am to 2 pm in the Livingston Place plaza. The market will feature an abundance of local fresh organic and conventional produce, arts and crafts, and energizing entertainment in a fun and friendly environment. Blood donor clinics 152 units of blood were collected at the February and May blood donor clinics, helping to save 456 lives! Thanks to everyone that donated. Upcoming clinics for this year are again in the third floor conference centre at Jamieson Place on July 31 and November 20 from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Spring newsletter survey In our last survey you gave us feedback on our building newsletters. We were pleased to see so many positive comments, as that indicates we are moving in the right directions. That said, we also appreciated your suggestions so that we can stay on top of what content is of interest and value to you. Please give us your feedback! This month, we’d like your feedback on building events. Please click here to fill out a brief survey. Your opinion is important to us!

AROUNDTHE BUILDING‘Enlightened’ idea shows bottom line benefitsARC Resources Ltd., who are located in Jamieson Place, didsome research that identified LED lighting as a viable optionthat could not only address staff concerns about lighting levels, but also had additional health/wellness and economic benefitsfor the company.

After further research, a pilot project and careful deliberation, the company has moved forward with a full office LED lightingretrofit for more than 380 employees. At this time 80% of thework has been completed, with the remaining 20% scheduledfor next year. The changeover only required changing the bulbs.Fixtures and motion sensors remained intact and functional.

Benefits to ARC and the environmentThe lighting changeover from fluorescent tubes to LEDswill result in several benefits to the environment andto ARC:

• Annual lighting energy consumption will be reducedby 183,000 kw.

• 11g of mercury will be eliminated from their workspaceand subsequently from the environment. That is enoughmercury to pollute approximately 11 million liters ofdrinking water.

• The equivalent of 137 tons of CO2 emissions will beeliminated annually, the equivalent of removing 26 carsoff the road annually.

• A savings of close to $750,000 over the life of ARC’s lease.

• Reduced eye strain and fatigue for some employees due to LED bulbs running off of constant DC (direct current)power, as opposed to the flicker effect common influorescent tubes that run off of AC (alternatingcurrent) power.

• No emissions of UVa or UVb radiation from the LED tubes.

If you would like to know more about this initiative, contactTom Lavigne: [email protected] or 403-503-8674.

Livingston Place garbage on displayIn April we partnered with Green Calgary todemonstrate the kinds of things being put into thegarbage stream that can actually be recycled andto encourage all building employees to use therecycling programs in our building.

On April 17, we posted a display on the Plus 15 showing ourrecent waste audit results and building recycling statistics, including the present building diversion rate which is 57.2%.Sealed, clear bags of garbage currently being thrown out were in front ofthe display. These included material such as paper, cardboard, and foodwaste, all items that we have the ability to divert. We would also like to seea decrease in the number of coffee cups being thrown out. They cannot berecycled, but they represent a lot of the material found in the garbage.

For more information regarding the waste audit display and/or the recyclingprograms at Livingston Place, please contact the Tenant Services Managerat 403-303-2400 or visit the building website.

ATP testing to improve workplace healthWe are concerned about the health and wellness of our tenants, and want to be sure we are doing everything we can to providea clean and uncontaminated environment in which to work.

ATP testing is the most commonly adopted method for real-timemonitoring of cleaning process performance and is used as astandard by many hospitals. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) ispresent in all animal, vegetable, bacteria, yeast and mold cellsand detection of ATP indicates the presence of contaminationby any one of these sources.

ATP testing was recently done in our building in order to locateareas where our cleaning performance could be improved. Thecommon areas were tested in the afternoon and the 7th and8th floors South Tower were done in the evening with fairlygood results.

The information obtained from ongoing ATP testing will help usto continue to ensure that we are providing you with a healthyworkplace. If you have questions or suggestions please contactCharlenne Sobremonte, Tenant Services Manager,[email protected]

Tree seedlingsrecognize Earth Day

Earth Day is the largest, mostcelebrated environmental eventin the world.

We celebrated by giving out 600tree seedlings to tenants in our fourbuildings over the lunch hour onApril 22.. This brings the number oftree seedlings distributed over thepast four years to 1,600. Clearlywith your help we are makinga significant contribution topreserving our environment.

HEALTH &ENVIRONMENT…The Great Energy Challenge“The Great Energy Challenge” the week of June 10 built on the success of last year’s GreatMonitor Challenge. It was a campaign to heighten awareness about energy consumption inour building and to provide suggestions for changes that will help to conserve energy bydecreasing overall electricity use.

Through our electrical sub-meter system, we were able to track each floor’s total daily energyconsumption and then compare it to the previous week’s daily consumption. The floor thatdecreased their consumption the most over the course of the week was the winner.

The floor with the most significant change over the week is the third floor, Long Run, with anaverage of 6.51% energy saved. Their prize is a Healthy Living Lunch.

The following tips will help you and your office as you continue to strive to decrease yourenergy consumption:

• Turn off your computer monitors each night before you leave the office. For every LCD monitorthat isn’t turned off nightly we are wasting 22 kWh/month or approximately $29/year; andfor every CRT monitor that isn’t turned off nightly we are wasting 67 kWh/month orapproximately $90/year.

• If you use two or more monitors, only turn the additional monitors on when required. Not onlydo extra monitors add to overall electricity consumption, but they also create an additionalheat load in your office which makes the HVAC system have to work harder to coolyour space.

• Ensure that photocopiers, printers, and other large office equipment is turned off eachnight and set to Sleep Mode during periods of inactivity during.

• Only turn task lighting on when necessary and turn it off every night.

• All of our base building lighting is on motion sensors and should turn off automatically after15 minutes of inactivity. If you notice that lights are on when they shouldn’t be, pleasecontact ClikFIX at 1-866-254-5349 to report it so that we can ensure the motion sensorsare working correctly.

• If there are TVs within your office space, please ensure they are turned off each eveningor when not in use.

• Turn off your desk radios at the end of the day, and when you’ll be out of the office for a while.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Keri Cormier, General Manager [email protected] or 403-303-2461.
