Looking at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product? After
evaluating our preliminary task I looked at the things I could
improve for our main task, the main features consisted of: Smoother
transitions between cuts. Better lighting. Keep actors in
character. Sound/Volume levels.
Smoother transitions between cuts: Preliminary Task the
transitions between cuts in our preliminary task was badly
executed. I found that we should have placed the camera in
different positions to be able to get more of the shot without
cutting. For example there is an unnecessary cut between 0.48 and
0.56.
In this example I can now see that we could have been able to do
pan around the room to be able to get to the over shoulder shot.
Smoother transitions between cuts: Main Task: the transitions in
our main task are only used when needed. We placed our camera in a
position where as she walks you are able to see her fully without
cutting up the scene. This creates the smooth effect and sticks
with our brief.
Better lighting: Preliminary Task the lighting in our
preliminary task was quite gloomy, it did fit our mis-en-scene but
I felt as though the lighting could have been better planned to be
able to set an even darker mood. For example as the two actors are
walking up the stairs the lighting is quite dark therefor we see no
comparison when they get at the top of stairs. By going from light
to dark it would of created more of a dramatic effect.
Better lighting: Main Task In our main task it is set outside so
lighting was not an issue. But we still made sure that we got the
right weather for our filming day.
Keep actors in character: Preliminary task in our film it was
very serious which meant that people struggled to keep in character
the whole time. In our main task our actor Melanie Prater kept her
character and played the part well. I think this helped it become
the best opening sequence it can be.
Sound/Volume levels: Preliminary task the sound in our
preliminary task was made to be very loud at the start then fade so
you are able to hear the dialogue. I felt that putting the non
diagetic music all the way through lost some of the suspense as
people were getting used to the sound. In our Main task we aimed to
use less sound. Sound/Volume levels: Main Task In our Main Task we
wanted to use less sound to create a better feel. At the start of
our opening sequence we used an emotional song to introduce the
character and help to set the mood. We then chose to use a voice
over which allowed the audience to find out what the letter says
she puts on the grave and the bond between the person who has
passed and the actor. This is an example of the new skills we
learnt. We faded the music when the voice over starts to be able to
hear the voice over clearly, then faded the music back to how it
was originally.
