THE NEW MINIMAL Katie Hughes is a young up and coming designer from Northern England, although her silhouettes and general aesthetics have a feeling similar to that of Scandinavian designers such as Acne and J.Lindeberg. Her Autumn/Winter 13/14 collection HAVET focuses on a simple yet versatile way of dressing. She describes her target customer as stylish young women who want maximum effect with minimum effort. The garments within the collection are created from luxurious fabrics; such as metallic finishes, ‘scuba’ fabric, and even Perspex. The colours found within the collection are mostly of a muted palette inspired by sea foam with a metallic sheen to represent water and waves. The flash of neon bright orange was inspired by the beautiful colours of coral and tropical fish which the designer says she used an accent to represent how they create a flash of colour in the deep blue of the ocean. The collection has subtle athletic detailing to add a sports luxe feel. Texture is a major part of the collection, with Katie saying ‘I want people to want to reach out and touch my garments’. Contrasting textile panels create an interesting aesthetic, which is then combined with the layering of exaggerated ‘balloon’ shapes contrasted against bodycon basics. The main silhouette of the collection is clean lines and crisp shapes to create a tailored yet eclectic look. The collection consists of functional garments inspired by creatures of the sea for a 21st century European cityscape.
