1.Company Profile

With great pride, from the heart of Egypt, a global steel maker has evolved. The Beshay Steel group is one of the largest steel producers in Egypt and the Middle East, with a domestic market share of 25%. The group employs more than 2,800 handpicked personnel, qualified at the highest levels to continue to surpass the standards of the industry.

The company is a wholly owned subsidiary by the four Beshay brothers and is capable of producing over 2 MTPY of steel long products, rebars and wire rods. The majority of the production is consumed by the demands of the local market and the balance is exported to the Middle East, Europe and Asia.

Our vision is to steadily invest in expanding our production capacities in order to meet the exponentially growing global demands and therefore retain our position at the front of the steel industry.

Our mission is to produce and supply the highest quality product to our customers using processes that are sustainable and meet the high global standards of environmental control. 2.Integrated Steel Making

Raw materials, scrap or direct reduced iron pellets (DRI) are charged into the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). In the EAF, the charge is melted and tapped into a ladle at approximately 1620 °C

The ladle is transported to the ladle furnace station where the bath temperature and composi-tion are tuned and non-metallic inclusions are removed.

The ladle carrying the melt-ed steel is transferred to the continuous caster, where it is poured into a tundish. The steel forms a solid crust at the tundish moulds and square bil-

lets are produced.

Water sprays are continuously applied on the solidifying bil-lets until they reach the torch cutting machine where they are cut to length. The billets are at approximately 800°C at this stage.

The billets are then reheated in the reheat furnace to 1200°C after which they are rolled to re-bars and wire rods.

Re-bars are quenched in the thermo-processing unit, cut to length, packed and labelled ready for delivery.

3.Products and Services

The Beshay Steel group produces 2 MTPA of steel re-bars and wire rod; the quality of which surpasses all known standards. The group designs its steel products to meet the fine line where the mechanical properties are common between all standards. These long products received the UK Cares accreditation as well as other internationally recognised certificates, which is why our products compete in all markets around the globe.

The group also produces 40,000 TPA of steel structures and built-up sections. These are quality inspected by our intense quality control program as well as an independent inspection company, who is permanently present on site. This production capacity is expanding and will reach 100,000 TPA in 2010.

Product Range

The Beshay Steel Product Range covers re-bars from 10mm nominal diameter up to 40mm and wire rods from 6-8mm diameter. Rebars are produced at 12m lengths, unless otherwise specified by the customer.

All dimensional tolerances and ovality satisfy national and international standards.

Unit weight data are theoretical and are based on the nominal cross-sectional area. Beshay Steel bar unit weights satisfy the tolerances of both national and international standards.

4. Why Beshay Steel?

EASPEC is the Beshay Steel group production specification that surpasses all known standards. Our finely engineered products are renowned for their superior quality, not only be-cause their strength and composition meet the specifications but because they are engineered on the micro scale.

The microstructure of our rebars is composed of a tempered martensitic shell, which provides the required strength and hardness, while the core is a more ductile ferritic-pearlitic structure. Therefore our steel re-bars are not only strong; but bendable enough for the convenience of our customers.

Not only do we engineer the inside of the bar, we also take great care of the outer features. We use very costly, high wear resistant rolls in order to ensure perfect geometry of the bar ribs and therefore ensure excellent bonding with concrete.

Our products are superior from the inside out.


The microstructure of the rebars is carefully engineered by the thermo-mechanical treatment that is applied from the very be-ginning of the rolling process. The chemically homogeneous billets are soaked at a specific temperature where a phase transformation to the formable Austenite phase is provoked. These austenitic billets are then passed through the roughing and intermediate rolling stages where the required section re-duction is achieved.

The bars then go through a thermo mechanical treatment stage, where the bar’s outer shell is transformed to a strong tempered-martensitic structure while the core remains a duc-tile pearlitic-ferritic phase. This means that the final product not only exceeds the mechanical properties required by inter-national standards, but it also maintains remarkable bendabil-ity for our customer’s convenience.

Samples from 2 main local competitors where compared to Beshay Steel. This was car-ried out by measuring the mi-cro hardness across the bar diameter in 2mm iterations.

The Beshay Steel bars showed significantly high-er hardness values in the outer tempered martensitic shell than the samples pro-duced by both competitors. The graph also shows that

the hardness values decrease smoothly towards the centre of the bar, where the ductile ferrit-ic-pearlitic structure is present.

This strict microstructure con-trol enables Beshay Steel to maintain excellent mechanical properties with no compromis-es to our customer’s needs.

This is why our bars are su-perior from the inside out.

5.Sales Network

Beshay Steel controls twenty five percent of the domestic Egyptian market with over 60 distributors across the country. This distribution network is growing rapidly and it is estimated to reach 200 distributors by 2010.

Because our products surpass the European standards and have been awarded the UK Cares, we export to several coun-tries in the Europe such as the United Kingdom, Italy, Germa-ny, Russia and Ukraine. We have a large share of Middle East imports especially neighbouring countries, such as the Gulf States, Syria, Sudan and Algeria.


6.Sustainability


Energy

Steel making is a very energy demanding process. This is why we continuously invest into improving our equipment in order to maintain maximum efficiency and reduce energy consumptions, whether electrical or gas.Following the same strategy, the new Beshay Steel headquarters will be operated 100% using solar power. This project will be completed by 2011. In parallel we are currently studying how renewable energy can be utilised in our plants.

The Environment

During Steel Making, emissions of CO, CO2, SOX and NOX are a known by product. Beshay Steel invested into a superior de-dusting system, with a suction capacity of 2.5 million Nm3/h. This allows us to reduce and filter our emissions in order to provide a safe working environment for our employees and decrease our impact on the environment. This off-gas is constantly monitored and the steel making process is adjusted accordingly to minimise those emissions even further.
