FROM THE AIRPORT TO CENTRAL LONDON:
There are two main London airports: Heathrow and Gatwick.
HEATHROW

Buses – National Express run frequent coach services throughout the day with journey times to
London Victoria of between 45 minutes – 1 hour.
Underground - The Piccadilly Line runs from the airport into central London.
Train – Heathrow Express trains run to and from London Paddington every 15 minutes, and the
journey takes 15 minutes. Heathrow Connect trains stopping service to London Paddington runs
every 30 minutes, and the journey takes 26 minutes.
Taxi - London taxis are available outside each terminal. The cost to central London is approximately £45- £70, and the journey time is approximately 1 hour.
GATWICK

Buses – easyBus to Fulham Broadway (West London) runs every 15 minutes and the journey takes
1 hour. National Express coaches run every hour and the journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes.

30-35 minutes. Southern Trains to London Victoria via East Croydon and Clapham Junction run
every 15 minutes, and the journey takes 35 minutes.
Taxi - Journey times and costs vary depending on your destination, but take around 65 minutes
to central London.

TRANSPORT LINKS TO ROEHAMPTON UNIVERSITY
From Heathrow Airport – travel by Heathrow Express train to Paddington Station, then travel
by Underground train (District line) to Putney Bridge and take Bus 265 from Stop FB to
Roehampton University.
From Gatwick Airport – travel by Southern Train to Clapham Junction Station. Change trains at
Clapham Junction Station and take a Southwest Train to Barnes Station, then take Bus 265 from
Stop B to Roehampton University.
NB. It may be easier to travel to Roehampton University from Gatwick Airport.
Bus – Bus 265 travels from Putney Bridge Underground Station directly to Roehampton University
Main Entrance.
Coach - There is a main coach station at London Victoria serving all areas of the country.
Train – The nearest mainline train station is Barnes Station from which Roehampton University is
a 10 minute walk. Alternatively, you can take Bus 265 directly to Roehampton University Main
Entrance from outside the train station.

from Roehampton University.
Car – Car parking is available on the campus at Roehampton University on a first-come-first-served

Train
The nearest mainline train station to RAD headquarters is Clapham Junction. From Clapham
Junction Station (Grant Road exit) the Academy headquarters is a 15 minute walk or take the 170
bus which stops outside the main gates (Battersea High Street).
Underground
The nearest underground stations to the Academy headquarters are:
South Kensington (Piccadilly, District and Circle lines)
Take the 345 or 49 bus from outside the underground station.
Sloane Square (District and Circle Lines)
Take the 319 or 19 bus from outside the underground station.
All of the above buses stop at Battersea Bridge and the Academy is a 10 minute walk along
Battersea Church Road / Westbridge Road.

5. REGISTRATION INFORMATION
RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS
Residential students must go straight to Roehampton University on Sunday 14 July,
Sunday 21 July, Sunday 28 July or Sunday 4 August
All residential students will be registered for the Summer School between 2.00pm -
4.00pm in Elm Grove Reception, Digby Stuart College, Roehampton University,
Roehampton Lane, SW15 5PU on one of the following dates:

Please note that there are no places to eat on the Roehampton University site on the day of
registration.
Parents/guardians are requested to ensure students are registered with a member of RAD personnel (identifiable by name badges) before leaving them.
There will be a welcome meeting for all residential students, Housemother and
Chaperones at 4.00pm on each Sunday of the Summer School. We advise that
all parents/guardians attend the welcome meeting with their child/ward.
NON-RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS
All non-residential students should register at the Academy headquarters at 9.00am on the Monday
of the week they have enrolled on. During registration students will be given a timetable and
introduced to their Chaperones.

6. COLLECTION INFORMATION
Residential students: Residential students must be collected at 1.15pm on Saturday 20 July,
Saturday 27 July, Saturday 3 August or Saturday 10 August from Academy headquarters. All
residential students should bring their luggage with them to the Academy on the Saturday morning,
and it will be stored during their classes. We would appreciate prompt collection of your
children/wards at the close of the Summer School.
Non-Residential students: Parents are reminded that students should be collected promptly at
the end of each day. The Academy does not hold responsibility for the students once the Summer
School day is over.
You were required to indicate at the time of applying whether your child/ward will be collected by
an adult, or making their own way home at the end of each day, and if applicable you were
requested to enter the name of a designated adult responsible for collecting the student. Please ensure you notify the RAD staff at registration if you would like to make any changes to this.
Parents are kindly requested not to visit students during the week, either at the
Academy or accommodation address. Thank you.

Class Placement: Allocation to classes is at the discretion of the Academy and the Artistic
Advisor. Class allocation is determined by the information provided on the application form, which
includes last examination taken, current grade studying and age. No reports, assessments or
correspondence will be entered into regarding group allocation or the participant’s progress during
the Summer School. Changes to groups will not be made, unless advised by members of the
teaching faculty. Please refrain from requesting a change to a student’s group either
before or during registration. Students will be introduced to their group when they arrive at
the Summer School.
Lunch: A cold lunch including sandwiches, salads, snacks and fruit will be served to all students at
the Academy. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
Medication / Allergies: Please ensure that you have informed the Academy of any allergies to
medication and/or food that students may suffer from, as well as any required medication, so that the Housemother and Chaperones can be informed. Please note that as part of the Summer School,
make-up and hair products may be used. If your child/ward has sensitive skin, we would advise that
they bring their own make-up that they would usually use for examination/performances. We will
provide wet wipes to remove make up.
Insurance: Participants are advised to consider taking out insurance against withdrawal due to
injury/illness or requiring medical treatment or hospitalisation; or due to personal or family reasons
which might prevent them completing the course. Participants with an existing injury attend the
course at their own risk. Please ensure that you bring with you any necessary paperwork relating to
your medical insurance cover and your entitlement to receiving medical treatment in the UK (if
relevant).
Taxis: In the event of a medical emergency it may be necessary for your child/ward to be
accompanied to an NHS Walk-In Centre for assessment via taxi. In this instance you will be
required to reimburse the Academy for a return taxi fare. We will contact you to arrange payment.
Emergency: For contact names and numbers please refer to the contact list in section1.
Pocket Money & Valuables: Students will NOT require a large amount of cash during the
Summer School. The Academy cannot be held responsible for safeguarding any money
or valuables, and cannot be held liable for any loss. Students should carry their valuables
with them at all times. We can store students’ passports in the Academy safe and distribute them
on the final Saturday. The Royal Academy of Dance will not accept any liability for missing
passports. Please do not leave the Academy on the final day of the Summer School
without your passport.
Weekend students (those staying two consecutive weeks): Students should bring an Oyster
card, with a minimum of £20 credit or a contactless debit/credit card for outings at the weekend
when coach travel is not arranged.
Photography / Filming: Students are not permitted to take photographs or videos during classes.
Please note that RAD staff will take a photo of your child on the first day for internal identification
purposes and it will not be publically used. Some classes may be professionally photographed by the

RAD for documentation and future publicity purposes. Photographic consent was sought in the
application form. Please speak to a member of RAD staff if you have concerns.
Visas: Students from non EU countries should check before leaving their own country as to
whether they require an entry visa for the UK.
Climate: Though July/August is technically summer, the climate is changeable and provision should
be made for rain and cold weather. All students are advised to bring at least one warm jacket,
sweater and rainwear.
Code of Conduct: During the Summer School students are expected to follow the Code of
Conduct of the school. This will be explained to all students at the welcome meeting. The Academy
reserves the right to exclude or refuse any student prior to, or during the school. In this instance
no refund will be given. The Academy will not be held responsible for any damage or injury,
however caused, to any student attending the course.
Safety: Our attitude to safety must be upheld by the students; even if they are allowed a much
greater level of freedom at home, it is essential that safety holds a higher priority than each
student’s individual lifestyle. Students under the age of 18 years are not permitted to leave the
Academy or accommodation campus without being accompanied by a Chaperone. If something or
someone is causing concern or worry to the students during their time at the Academy, we ask
that they speak to the Housemother or ask Reception to call one of our Trusted Adults: Louisa
Dalton (Lead Student Activities Officer or Gia Gray (Dance School Manager) in the Training
Department on the ground floor. Students can also speak to their teachers or chaperones, and
there’s always someone to help at reception. Or should they prefer, email [email protected]
and we’ll be there to help.
Merchandise: Summer School t-shirts, water bottles and bags are available to pre-order via the
order form (please download from website). Summer merchandise as well as RAD ballet shoes,
leotards, tights, socks and a large selection of books will be available for purchase before and after
classes at the RAD Shop on the ground floor of the building:

8. ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION
ELM GROVE, ROEHAMPTON UNIVERSITY
Accommodation has been booked at Elm Grove, Roehampton University (for address see page 3) for all
residential students attending the Summer School from the afternoon of Sunday 14, 21, 28 July and Sunday 4
August until the arranged day of departure.
Room Allocation: Single room accommodation has been arranged at Elm Grove. All rooms have ensuite
facilities. Room allocation is at the discretion of the Academy and rooms are issued on a first-come-first-
served basis.
Meals: Breakfast and a choice of evening meals are served daily in Digby Stuart Canteen, Roehampton University. A cold sandwich/salad lunch will be served at the Academy.
Telephones: Mobile phones may not be used during the day, other than in the event of an emergency.
Chaperones will look after students’ phones during class time. In the evenings students are permitted to
use mobile phones, however if students are found to be using mobile phones after lights-out, Chaperones
reserve the right to look after mobile phones overnight.
Towels and bed linen are provided.
Laundry facilities are available on site. The cost is £2.00 per wash £1.00 per dryer.
Housemother/Chaperones: We provide Chaperones and a Housemother who will supervise the students at all times. We encourage students to speak to their Chaperone/Housemother in the first
instance about any problems or issues that arise, before calling their parents/guardians.
Coaches will be arranged for transport between Roehampton University and Academy headquarters, and
the theatre outing for residential students only.
Please note that there are no televisions at the accommodation. We would strongly suggest you bring plenty of books, games and activities to keep you occupied in the evenings.
Any costs incurred through damage to or loss of equipment at Roehampton University by Summer School
students will be passed on to the relevant parent/guardian.
Internet access: There is Wi Fi internet access at the accommodation available free of charge in students rooms. Once your child/ward has enrolled they will be able to connect to the server and create
an account to use this service.
For residential students attending two consecutive weeks of the Summer School, classes will end at 1.15pm
on Saturday 21 July (week 1), Saturday 28 July (week 2), Saturday 4 August (week 3) and Saturday 11 August
(week 4). Small outings may be arranged over the weekend period, see Section 9, page 17. Meals will be
provided for all students, and they will be fully supervised during these days.
We do not encourage parents to take their children out during the week. However, if you wish to take your
child out on Saturday afternoon or Sunday, please complete the Parental Permission Consent Form
included with this pack and return it at registration.

9. OUTINGS AND EVENTS
WEEKEND OUTINGS
For residential students attending two consecutive weeks of the Summer School, classes will end at 1.15pm
on Saturday 20 July (week 1), Saturday 27 July (week 2), Saturday 3 August (week 3) and Saturday 10 August
(week 4). Small outings to local shops/attractions may be arranged over the weekend. Meals will be provided
for all students, and they will be fully supervised during these days.
Students should bring an Oyster card, with a minimum of £20 credit or a contactless debit/credit card for
outings at the weekend when coach travel is not arranged.
If you do not wish your child/ward to participate on these outings please notify a member of the Training
Department at the time of registration.
THEATRE TRIPS
Tickets have been ordered for all students (residential and non-residential). If any non-residential students are
unable to attend the theatre trip, please inform the Training Department as soon as possible.
On the day of the theatre trip, all non-residential students will need to be collected from the Academy
at 4.30pm by a parent/guardian and taken to the theatre where they will be met by a member of RAD
staff at 7.00pm.
Students may wish to have a small amount of money to purchase a programme or refreshment.
One ice cream has been ordered for each student for the performance. Students will be required to
choose an ice cream flavour at registration.
The use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited whilst at the theatre.
Week 1: School of Rock, Wednesday 17 July at 7.30pm
Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra
bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-
shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey
falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within.
Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie, this high-octane smash delivers
face-melting guitar riffs and touching romance in equally awesome doses!

Week 2: Aladdin, Tuesday 23 July at 7.30pm
Walt Disney Theatricals brought their Tony Award nominated production of Aladdin the Musical to London's West End at the
Prince Edward Theatre in May 2016. Since opening on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre on 20 March 2014, the show
has been enjoyed by thousands of audience members from around the world, bringing the colourful and memorable tale to life in
a unique and dazzling way.
Directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Something Rotten), the show leaps to the stage bursting
with dramatic flair and boundless energy. The musical stays true to the original 1991 animated feature, and tells the story of
Aladdin, a street urchin who meets and falls in love with Princess Jasmine. However, Jasmine can only marry a prince, but all is not
lost as Aladdin owns a magic lamp, and with the help of its Genie sets out to win the hand of his princess in marriage.

Week 3: Wicked, Wednesday 31 July at 7.30pm
WICKED, the West End and Broadway musical sensation, is already the 9th longest running musical in London theatre history.
Winner of over 100 major awards, including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and ten theatregoer-voted WhatsOnStage
Awards (winning ‘Best West End Show’ on three separate occasions), the classic musical has now been seen by almost 10 million
people in London alone.
‘Packed with wit, storming songs and beautiful costumes’ (The Guardian), WICKED imagines an ingenious backstory and future
possibilities to the lives of L. Frank Baum’s beloved characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and reveals the decisions and
events that shape the destinies of two unlikely University friends on their journey to becoming Glinda The Good and the Wicked
Witch of the West.

London Summer School Week 1: 15 – 20 July 2019
Anna Forbes
Ballet Technique & Ballet Group Dance / Repertoire
Anna was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and began dancing from the age of 2 at The
Lindsay School of dance. She was also an associate of Scottish Ballet and it was
following her year of training here that she gained a place at The Royal Ballet School. Her time at White Lodge was very special as she got the opportunity to
dance with The Royal Ballet Company in the The Nutcracker for three seasons,
also Swan Lake for 2 seasons, and in her penultimate year, Sleeping Beauty.
Another highlight of her time here was getting the chance to be in a BBC
documentary with Jennifer Saunders.
She completed her vocational training at Elmhurst School for dance in association
with Birmingham Royal Ballet, where she gained her Trinity Diploma in
professional dance. Upon graduating she performed with Ballet Ireland initially and
then English National of the opera in the Westend was a definite Ballet for 2 years
before transitioning into musical theatre. Playing the role of Meg Giry in Phantom
of the Opera and performed the role of White Cat in CATS on board Oasis of the sea which travelled around
the Caribbean for 9 months.
Since obtaining her RAD (PDTD) qualification in the summer of 2017 she has been teaching full time at a
number of ballet schools in and around London and working at Tring Park Associates full time on a Saturday.
She is very excited to be back at the RAD headquarters this year to teach at the summer school.
Maria Rowland ARAD PDTD
Ballet Technique & Ballet Group Dance / Repertoire
Maria trained at The Royal Ballet School, both White Lodge and Upper School
before dancing with Images of Dance for 2 years. She has performed as a
classical ballet dancer in England and Europe dancing with Glyndebourne Opera.
Roncalli, Cirque d’Hiver, and for 9 years at Lido de Paris as a Bluebell and
Principal Pas de Deux in the shows C’est Magique and Bonheur, where she was
also a dance captain. Maria has performed in many galas and fashion shows
throughout Europe and choreographed for Europa Park, Germany. She has also
worked with Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Maria gained both her Diplome d’Etat in classical dance from Paris, France and
her Professional Dancers Teachers Diploma from the Royal Academy of Dance
in 2008. Since graduating Maria has taught at Urdang Dance Academy, D and B School of Performing Arts and
London Studio Centre. Maria started working as a freelance ballet teacher for the Royal Academy of Dance in
2010 and was delighted to become Dance School Principal of the Dance School in 2011 where she stayed till
2018 before continuing her teaching profession at Arts Educational School London.
Maria was accepted as a Graded and Vocational Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance in 2015.

Emma Dodds
Creative
Emma trained at The Hammond School enjoying a diverse dance
education in classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap and Spanish dance.
Wishing to specialise in contemporary dance and develop herself as an
artist and choreographer, she then went on to train at Trinity Laban
Conservatoire of Music & Dance, graduating with a BA Hons Degree
Dance Theatre. Emma has enjoyed a varied performing career from TV
to theatre, ballet and independent projects. In 2017 Emma graduated
from the RAD’s Professional Dancers’ Teaching Diploma, passing with
Distinction. Since then, she has worked as an Associate Lecturer in
Dance for the University of Surrey, as well as running her own youth
dance projects and working as an RAD dance teacher in her local region.
Emma now works on the teaching faculty at Ballet Theatre UK teaching
contemporary dance technique, choreography and Pilates.
Sonny Ward
Musical Theatre
Sonny started his professional training at the age of 17 after receiving a
scholarship to attend Millennium Performing Arts, where he was awarded
with a National Diploma in Professional Dance and Musical Theatre. He also trained as an actor with the National Youth Theatre in London and trained for
many years as a flamenco dancer at the renowned Escuela de Baile in London.
Performing credits include: Cannon & Ball, Disneyland Paris, Scottish Opera,
Ambition Ball at Emirates Stadium, Billy Elliot USA Workshop, Flamenco
Spectacular at the Peacock Theatre, Dick Whittington Panto at London Zoo.
Sonny has also worked for Warner Bros as a Slithering Student in two of the
Harry Potter films.
Choreography credits include: Step Live! at Sadler’s Wells, Strictly Disco
Fever for Move It 2015, Musical Medley for West End Live in Trafalgar Square, Little Shop of Horrors at the
Evening Standard “Get Reading” event in Trafalgar Square, The Lord Mayor’s Show 2012, as well as TV
commercials for Sainsburys, Weetabix, Littlewoods. Sonny has worked with music artists such as Tinie
Tempah, Joel Compass with Rudimentals and GFrsh on various projects.
Sonny has taught Technical Jazz at Sylvia Young Theatre School for the past 8 years. He is a teacher for the
Royal Academy of Dance and is company leader for the Step into Dance jazz company. Sonny has also taught
at The Place, Hurtwood House and internationally.
Rhiannon Hopkins
Singing
Rhiannon was a classical musician from a young age, achieving grade eight on
both the piano and clarinet at the age of thirteen. She then went on to train as
a dancer at Bodywork Company Studios in Cambridge and soon after
graduating was lucky enough to travel the world as a dancer for Princess
Cruises and then as a musician on P&O before returning to London. Last year
she worked as Musical Director and played the role of 'Penny Scyllen' in
'Return to the Forbidden Planet' (Upstairs at the Gatehouse theatre). She also
co-wrote and musical directed musical comedy 'Love Me Tinder' with Julie
Atherton (Karma Sanctum, Soho.) Rhiannon now works as an actor-musician
and composer and also performs as a musical comedian.

Liane McRae Dip PDTC
Ballet Technique & Ballet Group Dance / Repertoire
Liane trained at the Royal Ballet School and has worked with London City Ballet,
English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. She gained the
Academy’s Professional Dancer’s Teaching Diploma (PDTD) in July 2000 and
went on to work at Northern Ballet School and was part of the Scottish Ballet
Associate Programme. Liane then joined the faculty at RAD headquarters in
London teaching children’s grades, and worked regularly for the RAD conducting
Repertoire Workshops and Intensive Courses for Vocational students throughout
the UK.
Liane went on to complete a two year placement in Dubai, after which she worked as a freelance teacher in
London at organisations including Performers College and the Centre of Advanced Training Scheme. Liane
also worked at The Dance School of Scotland and is now working as a freelance teacher in London. She has
taught on a number of RAD Summer Schools worldwide and is a member of the Faculty of the RAD Dance
School.
Paul Clarke Ballet Technique & Ballet Group Dance / Repertoire
Paul had his early training with the Jean Kelly School of Dance in Leicester.
At sixteen he was offered a place at the Rambert School of Ballet and moved to
London to continue his training.
Upon graduation he joined the Deutsche Oper Am Rhein Ballet – Düsseldorf,
Germany, (1982-1987) dancing in ballets by George Balanchine, Jiri Kylian, Heinz
Spoerli, Erich Walter, Roland Petit and many others. He also danced with Malmö Staats
Theatre Sweden (1987-1988) and Hannover State Theatre, Germany, (1988-1996)
where he was promoted to soloist and performed principle roles in both classical
and contemporary ballets.
After his dance career, Paul returned to London and retrained as a stage and costume designer at the
Wimbledon School of Art (1996-1999) gaining a BA (Hons) degree. Paul worked as a freelance theatre/ costume designer and freelance dancer from 1999-2006.
His design credits include operas, ballets, contemporary dance, children’s theatre and several London West
End musicals.
In 2006 Paul decided to return to dance, re-training and later graduating, from the Professional Dancers
Teaching Diploma course (PDTD) at the Royal Academy of Dance London, with Distinction.
Paul taught at the Hammond School of Dance, Chester (2006-2007).
He then returned to London to join the full-time ballet faculty at the Rambert School (2007-present).
Paul has worked as External Examiner on the PDTD Course (2012-2015) and is a PDTD guest tutor for The
Royal Academy of Dance (2016-present) and has taught on their London and International summer schools in
Italy and Germany.
Paul taught for the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, (ISTD) on their Boys Only Dance Day (2017), and
has also worked as a consultant for the CDET (Council for Dance Education and Training) accrediting dance
schools nation wide. Paul speaks fluent German.

Morgan Cloud MA
Creative & Contemporary
Morgan holds a Master of Arts from London Contemporary Dance School and a
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Theatre from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
He has performed across the UK, USA, Germany, Russia, and other European
countries in contemporary and dance-theatre works by companies including Made
by Katie Green, Troika Ranch, Nigel Charnock + Company, Smallpetitklein, and the
Rosie Kay Dance Company. He has been commissioned to choreograph works for
CAT West Midlands and the University of Hawai’i at Hilo, and assisted with a large
scale site-specific work for the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad.
Morgan currently teaches at Performers College and Tring Park School for the
Performing Arts. Morgan specialises in a mindful approach to learning and making
dance and is interested in making dance as fun as it is to do as it is to watch.
Wade Lewin
Musical Theatre and Street dance
Before moving to London, Wade performed with Company Fierce Academy,
winning the National Street Dance Championship in 20015. He then joined the band The Beatfreakz, who scored two top ten singles, before making his
West End debut in Disney's The Lion King.
Wade has worked with artists such as Kimberly Wyatt, Simon Cowell and
Ashley Banjo and performed at the London 2012 Olympics.
Wade currently teaches on Step into Dance, a partnership between the Jack Petchey Foundation and the
Royal Academy of Dance which is the UK's largest fully inclusive secondary school dance programme,
providing extra-curricular classes and performance opportunities to 200 mainstream and SEN schools per
year across London and Essex.
Jade Anand
Yoga
Graduating from The Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2011
and majoring in dance education, Jade spent five years working in an
independent girl’s school in London. Whilst there, she worked closely
with children of all ages and partook in a range of activities, from
teaching the students yoga to choreographing school productions.
Combining her love for yoga and working with children, Jade went on to
complete her yoga teacher training and spent six months travelling
around South East Asia and America practising yoga and teaching one on
one classes. Since returning to London, she teaches several different
styles of yoga including vinyasa, hot power, restorative and post-natal.
Jade strongly believes that yoga has a positive influence on children; It
not only benefits the child physically but also creates a higher sense of
wellbeing and mind-set within a safe and fun environment.

Rebecca Peters
Ballet & Ballet Group Dance / Repertoire
Born in Preston, Lancashire, Rebecca began dancing at the early age of three at
The Carol May academy of dance, following the RAD ballet syllabus and the ISTD
tap and modern syllabus. Rebecca gained distinction at all levels of RAD and
achieved the ARAD (associate of The Royal Academy of dance) in 2006.
Rebecca danced as an associate of The Royal Ballet School, and then went on to
gain a place at White Lodge, The Royal Ballet lower School. Whilst at The Royal
Ballet School, Rebecca danced with The Royal Ballet company in The Nutcracker
for three seasons. She also danced at the opening ceremony of The Royal Opera
House, Covent Garden in front of her majesty the Queen. Another highlight of
her time at White Lodge was dancing in the opening of Mick Jagger's performing arts school, and being in a
BBC documentary with Jennifer Saunders.
Rebecca continued her training at Elmhurst School in association with The Birmingham Royal Ballet. Here she
gained her Trinity Diploma in professional dance. Whilst at Elmhurst Rebecca went on tour with The
Birmingham Royal ballet and danced numerous roles whilst doing so.
Upon graduation Rebecca successfully auditioned for The Estonian Vanemuine Ballet company. Rebecca danced as a professional ballet dancer here for three years;dancing many roles in numerous classical and neo-
classical ballets. Rebecca danced with Cork City Ballet and London Ballet Ensemble.
Rebecca went onto complete the Professional Dancers Teaching Diploma with the Royal Academy of Dance,
gaining a Distinction and her RAD registered teacher status. Most recently Rebecca has helped to establish
the juniors syllabus for English National Ballet School and is their current juniors tutor.
Darren Parish PDTDiploma RAD, RADRTS, DPBMN, NFSH, Dip Arts
and Dance
Ballet & Ballet Group Dance / Repertoire
Darren trained with Jennifer Johnson before studying at The Australian Ballet
School. On graduating in 1985 he enjoyed a successful career of 19 years as a
Senior Artist and Soloist with Queensland Ballet, Dortmunder Ballet, Bonner
Ballet, Basel Ballet, Gothenburg Ballet, Royal NZ Ballet, English National Ballet,
Guest Arena di Verona and Scottish Ballet.
He was nominated as Young Australian of the Year (Arts) 1988, received the
Cadbury Arts Award 1991, Male Dancer of the Year (Sweden) 1995, and Dance
Critics Award (Sweden) 1996.
As guest Notator for The Royal Ballet 2006-09 Darren collaborated on their
production of Sleeping Beauty and 3 pieces by Wayne Macgregor Chroma, Nimbus and Infra. In 2011 Darren
was invited to be Ballet Master and Notator for The Australian Ballet Company. He assisted on Graeme
Murphy’s Romeo and Juliet and staged Glen Tetley’s Gemini. 2012 saw him stage Ashton’s Les Rendezvous for
English National Ballet School and for The Royal Ballet School 2015.
Darren has held teaching posts at Elmhurst School of Dance, The Laban Institute and Showa University.
Freelance teaching has taken him to Ballet Companies, Vocational Schools and Projects worldwide. Through the Sir Frederick Ashton Trust he is involved with La Fille Mal Gardee and The Dream for the RAD. For dance
organisations he has taught for the BBO, Cecchetti Society, RAD, ISTD, Danceworks and Pineapple. He has

been involved with the Genee International Ballet Competition in 2010 and 2015 – and their Dance Challenge
in London, Belguim, Nederlands andl Luxembourg.
In 2018 Darren invited as a Trustee of The Royal Academy of Dance.
Jo Leahy
Creative
Dance specialist Jo trained at Laines Theatre Arts, The BRIT School and
Dance2xs. After graduating from Laban Conservatoire of Dance with a 1st Class
BA (Hons), Jo choreographed and performed for many festivals, theatres and
artists both in the UK and Europe, including Stratford Circus Theatre, Vocab
Dance Company, Keneish Dance and Redtape Dance. She has worked
professionally in Contemporary, Afro Fusion, Latin and Physical Theatre. Jo has
choreographed and directed many performances in Guildford, as Programme
Manager for Dance in Further Education and seen her former students
successfully audition for top dance institutes and dance companies in UK.
Alongside founding Bodmoves dance organisation, Jo is currently a member of
the Artist Bank at East London Dance, teaches and mentors for dance companies and schools across London
and Essex including, Step into Dance programme with RAD. Jo and has a strong interest in guiding people to
reach their full potential and developing enrichment opportunities in dance for all ages and abilities in local and
wider communities.
Norma Jean Tyrrell
Musical Theatre
Norma Jean did her professional training at Performers College on the 3 year
Musical Theatre course and received her Trinity National Diploma.
She has worked extensively in the arts in various areas, such as Musical Theatre,
Studio/Session singing, TV, Film and was involved with the tour and documentary
of former X Factor Contestant Rhydian Roberts. Most Notable Theatre Credits
include: West Side Story, Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel", The Merry
Widow, Les Miserables, ISTD Centenary Gala at Sadlers Wells
In 2014 Norma Jean decided to take a short break from performing and put her focus on teaching and ran her
own school in Dublin, Ireland. She discovered a true passion and love for teaching and since returning to
London has been freelancing at many schools and also teaches a regular Adult Tap Class at "Inspire Ballet and
Dance" in Balham.

London Summer School Week 4: 5 – 10 August
Dincer Solomon PDTD
Ballet Technique & Ballet Group Dance / Repertoire
Dincer Solomon was born in London and trained at the Arts Educational
Schools London and The Royal Ballet School. His professional dance career
began at the age of 17 when he joined London City Ballet where he danced
soloist and principal roles. He then joined English National Ballet where he
continued dancing till the end of his career. Dincer danced professionally for
a total of 16 years.
In 2004 Dincer retrained at the Royal Academy of Dance and received his
Professional Dancers Teaching Diploma. He has been teaching ballet at The
Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts since his graduation in 2004 and
became their Head of Ballet in 2017. He also guest teaches for The
Cecchetti Associates and has given ballet lectures for The National
Association of Teachers of Dance.
Desire Samaai PDTD
Ballet Technique & Ballet Group Dance / Repertoire
Desire Samaai was born in Cape Town, South Africa and her professional dancing career spans 17 years. She was a principal dancer with Cape Town City Ballet,
London City Ballet and Northern Ballet Theatre.
Desire retired from the stage in 2007 and went on study at the Royal Academy of
Dance where she graduated top of her class with distinction, before moving to
Canada where she joined Alberta Ballet Company as ballet mistress. While there,
she was also a regular guest teacher with Alberta Ballet School.
After the birth of her son, Desire returned to the UK and became the teacher for Central School of Ballet’s
Vocational Program and guest teacher at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. In 2011 she
joined Tring Park School for the Performing Arts as a classical ballet teacher to students on the Junior and
Senior courses, as well as auditioning students into the main school. Desire is also Head of the Classical Ballet
Academy, having taught on the program since its inception in 2010 and is a regular guest teacher at numerous
Summer Schools.

Chris Bean
Hip Hop
Christopher Bean is the Assistant Director of Semekor Performing Arts, a
traditional African dance and drumming group based in London and Ghana.
He has been teaching Hip Hop dance styles since 2000 privately and as part
of A Level and BTEC courses, now focusing on afrobeats and krump.
He now works for the RAD’s Step into Dance programme and for Children
in Need working with challenging behaviour in inner city schools. His
company is building two schools in Ghana which will be used to facilitate
exchange programmes between the UK and West Africa.
Jade Anand

12. OPEN DAY AND TUITION AWARD
OPEN DAY
The Open Day is a final celebration of all that the students have accomplished during the week. ALL
STUDENTS are expected to attend the open day. If for any reason a student is unable to attend, they must
tell the Training Department at the earliest opportunity on the first day.
Guests are invited on the final day of the Summer School to watch classes and a short demonstration of work
studied. Class observation has to be limited to two guests per student due to the capacity of the studios.
Please note latecomers may be required to wait until the start of the next class. At the end of the demonstration there will be a short presentation when each student will receive a certificate of attendance.
NB. The use of audio or visual recording is prohibited due to copyright regulations on both choreography
and music. Still photographs are also prohibited. However, you may take pictures of your child in the studio,
once the presentation of certificates has been completed.
TUITION AWARD
An award will be given to a student who has made significant improvement during the Summer School. The
award is for one week’s tuition at an Academy run Summer School anywhere is the world in 2020 or 2021.
The recipient will be selected by the teaching faculty and their decision is final.

The Royal Academy of Dance is pleased to offer an exciting programme of courses, suitable for students of all
ages and abilities.
Children’s Summer Classes
London HQ Week 1 Monday 21 July – Friday 26 July
London HQ Week 2 Monday 29 July – Friday 2 August
Children aged 4 – 7 years participate in daily classes in ballet and creative dance offering the chance to build
confidence and develop skills over several days. This course gives students the opportunity to explore
difference dance forms and work together to create and perform a showing of work to parents and guardians
on the final day.
Intensive Examination Syllabus Course
London HQ Monday 19 – Friday 23 August
If you are preparing for an RAD Vocational Graded Examination, then this could be the perfect course for
you. Run over consecutive days, students participate in a syllabus class followed by a pointe work class for
females and a virtuosity class for males. This course is designed for intensive study of the syllabus in preparation for examinations. Please note that students must have a thorough knowledge of the syllabus in
order to benefit from this course.
Mat Based Pilates
London HQ Monday 19 – Friday 23 August
Supplementing the Intensive Examination Syllabus Course in London, this is a form of body conditioning
designed to build core strength and improve posture through stretching, muscle toning and conditioning. It
can also help to correct body alignment. It is popular with dancers as the exercises help to stabilise and
strengthen core stability. The session will last one hour including: precision breathing, release stretching, and a
group of Pilates movements ending with relaxation.

Students under the age of 18 years are not permitted to leave either the accommodation venue at Roehampton
University or the Royal Academy of Dance headquarters, without being accompanied by either the Housemother, an
RAD Chaperone or with a nominated person over the age of 18.
If you wish to nominate someone over the age of 18 who is not an employee of the Academy to accompany your
child/ward on trips outside of the Academy and/or the accommodation, please complete the form below and return it
to a member of the registration team during registration on the first day of the course

Code of Conduct
For all students at RAD Headquarters, London
The aim of Summer Schools is to ensure that all students experience dance in a fun, friendly, relaxed and safe
environment. In order to help achieve this please take note of the following guidelines. We would like to stress that
these points are of great importance in assuring the wellbeing of all students on the Summer School.
All students must meet before each class in their designated changing area, as directed by the chaperones.
Students are not permitted to leave the courtyard during the day.
Fire Regulations: Students must make their way immediately to the nearest available Fire Exit and follow the
directions of the Fire Marshal.
Students must always wear shoes when they are walking around the building and make sure ribbons/laces are tied
properly.
Students must always keep themselves warm between classes.
Students must drink plenty of water throughout the day and ensure they eat breakfast and lunch. It is vital that they
keep up their energy levels throughout the day.
If students hurt themselves in class or feel unwell at any point they should tell their teacher, chaperone or member
of staff immediately.
Bullying will not be tolerated during the Summer School. Students should be respectful and considerate to others at
all times.
The Royal Academy of Dance is a work place and respect must be given to all staff. There must be no running or
shouting in the corridors.
No smoking is permitted anywhere on the premises.
The consumption of alcohol at any time during the Summer School is strictly forbidden. Residential students aged 18
years who make arrangements to leave the accommodation in the evening must refrain from drinking alcohol.
The consumption of illegal drugs or solvents at any time during the Summer School is strictly forbidden. Students
must inform the Training department should they require to bring and consume prescribed medication to the
Summer School or to carry it with them (if this has not already been disclosed on the Medical Consent Form which
was completed on enrolment).
Students must ensure that they keep any valuable personal items safe at all times. The Academy regrets that we
cannot be held responsible if anything accidentally goes missing.
Mobile phones may not be used during the day, other than in the event of an emergency. Chaperones will look after
students’ phones during class time. In the evenings students are permitted to use mobile phones, however if
students are found to be using mobile phones after lights out chaperones reserve the right to look after mobile
phones overnight.
