(Childreach Centre) Gisele Hauser (London Intercommunity Health Centre), Catherine

Monica Abdelkader (Cross Cultural Learner Centre), Dr. Beth Mitchell (London Health

Welcome & Introductions
Corinne welcomed members and requested new members to introduce themselves.
She welcomed Dharshi Lacey who presented on her work on Cultural Competency.
Dharshi provided the group with the following summary on a project she worked with
funding from Heritage Canada and as part of her job with Community Services
Coordination Network (CSCN). Cultural Competency training was developed which
comprises of six 2 hours workshops. A number of organizations and agencies were
trained and now they offer these workshops to interested organizations and group.
Dharshi also indicated that the Health & Wellbeing can use the materials while credit
should be given to both Heritage Canada and CSCN. HWB obtained a copy of the
Training.
Janet McAllister shared the new resource developed by Networking for an Inclusive
Community (NIC) and noted that these can be obtained through the NIC. Janet also
mentioned that NIC is coordinating the Linking Cultures Certificate Course with
Fanshawe College.
Monica shared that she offers cultural sensitivity training as part of her job at CCLC
Corinne thanked Dharshi for presenting to the group and for her permission to use the
training materials.
Selecting a Vice chair
Jayne Scarterfield was not able to attend due to illness. Gisele was in attendance. After
a brief discussion, the group thanked both candidates for putting their names out and
demonstrating further commitment, voted to have the two as vice-chairs.
Approval of Meeting Minutes
March 9, 2011 Minutes reviewed and approved.
Review of HWB Year One Work Plan
Sandra briefed the group on the Healthy Communities Funding Application. The Seeds
of Change Project seeks to engage communities in a dialogue and will address mental
health promotion and substance and/or alcohol misuse. The group decided to start the
process and engage communities both service providers and ethno-cultural groups in
two consultation meetings that will be held June.
Cultural sensitivity training:
The group did not meet due to challenges in their schedules. Materials shared at
today’s meeting as well as materials developed through the London Police will be
utilized to develop and or adapt for the purpose of using them for future training.
Nimmi and Monica have been engaged in delivering some training to the hospital and
Nursing Students at UWO. Volunteers are requested to join since there are two
individuals on this working group.
Developing screening and assessment tools
Tasha reported that the group will further review existing assessment tools such as the
Ontario Common Assessment of Needs and the GAIN-SS tools. Group also request
volunteers to join them.
Provide supports for families in a holistic manner
It was noted that two of the System Reengineering committees: Neighbourhood
Engagement Development and the Common Experience align with this group’s work.
Members who have signed to work on this issue will be contacted to sit on one of
these two System Reengineering groups.
It was noted that four neighborhoods have been identified for developing
Neighbourhood Child and Family-Centers: Argyle, Carling, Westmount and White Oaks
It was noted that group need to engage groups like refugees and ways to train
individuals to reach out to all communities to access resources.
Wrap up:
Corinne thanked group and encouraged them to attend June’s meeting where the
group will review and confirm the Year Two Plan. The group is also requested to
participate on the working committees.
