Book of the Fraternity of the Assumption of OurLady.The volume, which contains the ordinances andannual lists of wardens and members of theFraternity, was copied by a single scribe from21 Richard II to 19 Henry VI (1441). Thereafterit was enlarged and continued by a series ofscribes. Entries from 1442-1689 werepresumably made annually. The name lists,which it mainly comprises, date from ca. 1395and continue from 1552, when female namescease to appear, as lists of the "Brethren of theYeomanry of the Skinners" to 1689. The last listwhich refers to either the fraternity or sorority ofthe Assumption of Our Lady is that for 1549,indicating the secularisation of the fraternityduring the reign of Edward VI. The lists arelavishly illustrated. They are important as theyshow a succession of datable border styles ofilluminators working in London from 1487. Thatfor 1528/9 is signed by Thomas Wygg ofPaternoster Row (f. 52) The volume alsoincludes several fine illuminations. The finest isa full page figure of Elizabeth Woodville, wife ofEdward IV (f.32v). There is also a smallerportrait of Margaret of Anjou, wife of Henry VI(f.34v) as well as a full page illumination of OurLady Crowned among the Saints in Heaven,which from its position seems to have beenexecuted around 1492 (f.41r)1 volume (ff. v and 124), coloured initials andrubrics; modern rebinding of wooden boards, inwooden caseFormer Reference: MS 31692

The Book of the Fraternity of Corpus Christi.The book is primarily an annual illuminated listof the Master and Wardens up to 1734. It wasprobably given its present form about 1485when the regular lists begin. The names aredescribed in the first entries as "the Brothersand Sisters of the Fraternity of Corpus Christi ofthe Craft of the Skinners of London entered atthe Feast of Corpus Christi". This continues to1586 inclusive, but from 1587 the lists are ofthe brethren of the mystery of Skinnersindicating the secularisation of fraternities (andsororities) which began in the reign of EdwardVI and continued with Elizabeth I. Each list isaccompanied by an illuminated decoration; thequality of the later illumination is markedlyvariable. The book plainly replaced and in partincorporated an earlier volume. The exact dateof its inception is therefore uncertain. Theearliest substantial entry is a bound-in copy ofthe charter of Richard II of 1393 (with a fineilluminated initial) which may have been madeclose to its original date.
