“When I was 6 years old, I saw a picture of Mayra Andrade playing guitar; I remember telling my dad ‘I wantto play that!’” Quickly thereafter, Noah Andrade was signing up for guitar lessons with Carminda Rocha. Growing up in a household where his parents always played different types of music ranging from Cape Verdean and rock to reggae and R&B, it was inevitable that Noah would someday chase the music. Whetherit was Lenny Kravitz, Sizzla, Cesaria Evora, Ferro Gaita or Sade, Noah was constantly being exposed to a varietyof musical influences. Listening to Mayra Andrade’s live recordings was what first inspired him to pursue a career in music. The 11 year old musician was born in Providence, RI where he has been attending Segue Institute forlearning in Central Falls. Since his first lessons, he proceeded to take on ore advanced classes with instructor,Evan Gorodetsky. Currently, he is under the instruction of Fred Delgizzo, who teaches based on music booksfrom Berklee. Noah also draws inspiration from listening to other great musicians. He enjoys observing the various styles and is motivated to pursue new musical challenges. “My dreams in music are to make otherpeople smile; I want the world to be a happy one,” Noah stated. Looking back, Noah shared that his love for music was not accepted well by his peers at first. Whenhe was a little younger, some of the kids at school would tease him about his instrument and discouragedhim at times. It so happens that around the same time he met his favorite musician, Sara Tavares. He hadgone to see her in concert, and she made a truly lasting first impression, as she took the time to show him around the before going on stage. “I feel blessed and it makes me feel so lucky because I am still not a master at what I am doing, and they have been playing for years and years,” Noah said. This great experiencetruly motivated him to continue playing adn keep his dream alive. This past summer, Noah performed at the Festival de Musica da Baia das Gatas 2010 in Sao Vicente,Cabo Verde. He has composed a few American songs during these last few years. Noah hopes to work withmany other producers in the near future. His next goal is to perfect his piano skills, which he has already started lessons. “Only time will tell where it leads me,” Noah affirmed. Although his plans are not yet clear, the future of this bright, young star certainly promises to be a remarkable one!

Heritage is a legacy that decends from one generation to the next. In the Cape Verdean culture of women, it is a legacy of intellect, courage, determination, and, of cource beauty. Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers of yesteryear ven-tured to a new land in all their glory. From the Islands to the States, from then until now, she remains the same. To her, family is everything, and if threatened, her inner strength emerges. There is a little “spicy” in her sweet, which makes her electrifying. Cape Verdean women are not afraid to move, to ascertain, or to explore what life has in store for them. Failure does not thwart their path; it is not an option.

If they shall fall, then they shall rise; they try until they fly. That is the inner beauty of their soul, which permeates to the sur-face. As a result, their outer exquisiteness is magnified times ten. As the years go by, she ages grace-fully. She is “still” captivating and can hold her own...even more so. Whether she is playing, working, or enjoying a night out on the town, her look is flawless. She’s a fashion plate and can dish it up at any time. She is not getting older, but better. Ladies, see what you have to look forward to? Fabulous!

Have we tapped into the Fountain of youth; or, is it in our genes?
