Lokmat Times Published simultaneously from Aurangabad & Nagpur AURANGABAD 16 Pages Rs 2.00 FRIDAY, 12 MARCH, 2010 BY DEEPAL TRIVEDI AHMEDABAD March 11: The ghosts of the 2002 riots has come to haunt Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi with the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team issuing a summons to him in connection with the Gulberg Society massacre, in which former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri was among the victims. This is the first time Mr Modi will be questioned in connection a riot case. Mr Modi will have to appear before the SIT on March 21. State government spokesman Jainarayan Vyas, reacting to the summons, said: “The BJP government and the honourable chief minister ... will cooperate with the process of law.” Mr Modi attended office and the Assembly as usual on Thursday and his supporters claimed the SIT’s action would only further increase the chief minister’s popularity and image. “He is the tallest leader in the BJP and this will help us. This is only a formality,” said one of his supporters. BJP president Nitin Gadkari, meanwhile, was quoted as saying that Mr Modi would fully cooperate with the investigators.” Winner of the Videocon presents APL-3 Rajuri Steel team with the glittering trophy and cheque for Rs 2.50 lakh, at the ADCA ground, in Aurangabad on Thursday. Patil Stadium where Adam Gilchrist had smacked a whirlwind century with 10 sixes and nine fours to script a 10- wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the first season. Women’s Bill in LS after Pranab talks to all sides BY OUR CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI March 11: The Congress leadership intends to field finance minister Pranab Mukherjee to hold talks with the advocates of a “quota within quota” for OBCs and minorities on the controversial Women’s Reservation Bill. Mukherjee, also Leader of the Lok Sabha, will have a delicate task to keep ally Trinamul Congress in good humour as well, after the latter demanded reservations for minorities as part of the bill, which is also being endorsed by the Samajwadi Party, RJD and Janata Dal (U). The Yadav leaders of these three parties had earlier consistently been opposing the bill in its present form. Mayawati’s BSP, on the other hand, is opposing the bill for different reasons. Other allies of the Congress, including the DMK, NCP and National Conference, have so far not taken any strong stand regarding minorities and OBCs. The government might feel compelled to modify the bill only if OBC and minority representatives come out openly against the existing bill both within and outside Parliament. However, government managers on Thursday remained tightlipped on whether it was open to amendments to the bill, or whether it would talk to its opponents only on the basis of the bill as passed by the Rajya Sabha earlier this week. The divisions in the Opposition ranks has also given the government a little breathing space to formulate strategy on how to get the bill passed in the Lok Sabha, and then get it endorsed by half the state Assemblies. As of Thursday, the Congress, BJP, DMK, AIADMK, CPI(M), CPI, Akali Dal, BJD and TDP are backing the bill in its present form, while Bihar chief miniser Nitish Kumar is all set to help the Congress on the matter. At the same time, neither the BJP nor the SP, BSP or RJD really want to do anything that might threaten the government’s survival because none of these parties are in any position to face Lok Sabha elections ahead of schedule or have any alternative government in mind. IPL-3: 45-day party is on Modi gets SIT summons 2002 riots LOKMAT NEWS SERVICE AURANGABAD March 11: Rajuri Steel defeated Green Gold Seeds by 6 runs to clinch the Videocon presents 3rd Lokmat Aurangabad Premier League final played at the Aurangabad District Cricket Association stadium tonight. The match that was being seen as a usual low score final turned out to be a thriller as the match went on with complete uncertainty and unpredictability till the last ball. Batting first, Rajuri Steel set a target of 117 runs in 20 overs for Green Gold Seeds. Chasing the target, Green Gold stumbled initially at the score of just 20 runs with the loss of five wickets. But the tail-enders made a comeback and took the match to the point of capriciousness. At the end of 20 overs, Green Gold scored 110 runs and even lost the last wicket on the last ball. It is worth mentioning here that Rajuri Steel were participating in the APL for the first time and came out to be the champions. Even though Rajuri beat Green Gold in the leagues, the latter had an edge over Rajuri Steel as the team had a number of well known players of the city. Having the edge, Green Gold eventually were more under pressure and ultimately succumbed to the pressure while the self-confident Rajuri turned the calculations upside down. Ministry flouts Cabinet again BY MANOJ ANAND GUWAHATI March 11: Officials of the ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution have once again blatantly flouted a directive by the Union Cabinet in order to favour the sugar mills of Maharashtra. On Wednesday the ministry granted an extension of the validity period of non-levy (open market sale) sugar, ignoring a Cabinet order to the contrary, which had been reiterated just last month. As reported earlier in this newspaper, the Cabinet Committee on Prices had asked the ministry to abide by the Cabinet decision of April 2009 and ensure allotment and release of the sugar quota on a weekly basis. In February 2010, the ministry had been told to re-notify the earlier Cabinet order directing the ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution to follow the rule of weekly allotment of non-levy quota, and in case of failure of sugar mills in releasing the quota, it should be converted into levy sugar (and released through the public distribution system). As sugar prices went up to Rs 50 per kg in the open market, the ministry was compelled to follow the rule for some time, and result was visible when sugar prices crashed to around Rs 2,850 per quintal on March 6. This, however, could not be sustained as within three days, on March 9, sugar prices further jumped and the sugar mills hiked the price to Rs 3,250 per quintal. The sugar mill owners were allowed to do so as the ministry on March 10, through a notification (No. SC-II/2009-10/ R.P), granted an extension of the validity period of the non-levy sugar quota of March up to April.
