LOCKDOWN WITH
THE JONESES
This week, we will be highlighting the excellent work produced over this last lockdown from the History, Maths and DT
departments.
History
Ali Kamaly Year 9 — Why do you think women were given the right to vote in 1918?
You must include the following in your answer: (8 marks)
• The suffrage movement
• The First World War Suffragists were peaceful protesters wanting women’s voting rights, who used strategies such as protesters that lowered the sta-tus of governments by showing that they are the villains in this problem, with newspapers etc. (such as force feeding women who were on hunger strikes). This did get some attraction, however, many avoided these peaceful protests because they could and it was easy. Many people regard this strategy as insignificant and not as effective as the suffragettes movement. Also, it did not have the amount of impact that it should have for the amount of time that it had taken. Therefore, due to the suffragists not gaining sufficient attention, suffragettes, who were a group of violent protesters who wanted women’s voting rights, raised. They fought people and tried to invade parliaments and more radical movements in general. Many people’s lives were lost for the cause. This rapidly gained attention which made some ask themselves why the protesters were willing to sacrifice their lives for this. The positive thing about the suffragettes was that it made many aware of the political injus-tice and gender inequality. In addition, World War II was in progress. Women had a major role in the war because they made up the majority of workers for weapons that were used for the war. Therefore, the country as a whole depended and relied on weapons that were created by women. Without the women’s help, England would not have won the war. Therefore, many regard this, as well, to have a vital role in attaining women’s voting rights. Also, some may think that this is a vital role because the government may have feared the rise of the suffragettes again after the war finished, thus complying to their needs (women’s voting rights). However, due to the radical actions, it gave many reasons why women were to not have voting rights (i.e. they can’t control them-selves or that they are too radical). Many regard this (radical actions) as an important role for women’s rights but others think that this demoralised women due to the suffragettes representing women as radical and out of control as well as dangerous. In conclusion, there were many factors for women attaining their rights to vote. However, many people debate on which factors played a more vital role than the other in attaining this right. Some say that suffragists had a more important role than the suffra-gettes whilst others think the opposite. Though, if the people were to put their differences aside, they would all agree that all of the factors (small or large) had a role in attaining this right, which was given in March 1918.

Chloe Appleton- How do peasants obtain their freedom
OBTAINING YOUR FREEDOM
Hi, I am a peasant that lives in a very small village. I do not enjoy it here because I do not have enough freedom! I am being told
what to do everyday and getting paid very little. It is not fun. I am planning to escape… it will be extremely risky but it's worth it if I
reach a town. They have much more freedom than in this hell hole. I feel like I will have a better life in a town. It is easier and there
are not people monitoring my every move.
I have heard some people talking about towns and how great they are! The food, the houses and the people! Anyways I better go
to sleep now before I get caught staying up to write in my journal. Good night.
Hi so I have just woken up and I have very bad back pains from my bed. Anyways, I have just read the newspaper and it says that
some towns are dirty and dangerous! I cannot believe it, that is not what I heard at all!
I think I might still try to escape this place because I might be able to get a decent job in a town. I could meet new fun people and
do fun things because I will be free. As free as the pig that escaped the slaughterhouse yesterday! I cannot wait!! Wait, let me
show you a drawing I did the other day!
Design Technology
For the past couple of weeks students in KS3 have been given the task to create a planter pot using only recycled waste
from home. Students learnt about the impact plastic bottles have on our environment, climate change, the pros and cons of
recycling, the 6Rs (Reduce, Refuse, Repair, Recycle, Re-use, Rethink), and lastly, how to be creative when designing and
making a product.
Students were asked to design a luxury birdhouse. They used their skills learnt in previous lessons to generate a range of unique
design ideas. Using video tutorials, students learnt how to use Google Sketchup to create CAD models of basic birdhouses.
Following this, they will develop their luxury birdhouses using Sketchup.
