Christmas in Romania

We are in the South-East part of Europe

…and in the centre of Romania• We are a primary

school, from Sighisoara (around 500 students, aged 6-14 years old).

• Sighisoara is a town situated in the center of Romania (Transylvania region).

Preparations…

The preparations for Christmas (Crăciunul) begin with the cleaning. Then we decorate the house, yard and the Christmas tree. We make special cards and we share them

After that we prepare the traditional food.

Our food consists of meat wrapped in cabbage (Sarmale), two types of cake (Cozonac and Lichiu), a type of sausage (Caltaboş), a type of stew (Pomana porcului), pork soup (Supă de porc ardelenească) and many more.

Then, after Christmas Eve (Ajunul Crăciunului) dinner; children, grandparents and parents are waiting for Santa (Moş Crăciun) to come and give presents to all family members.

Also children or young men start caroling neighbours, relatives and friends

Children go caroling at Christmas.

There is a special carol called Capra (the goat). One or a few carolers dress up as goats and dance.

On Christmas Day…

…in the morning we go to church..

We eat together, open the presents, enjoy all the preparations that we made…..visit our neighbours and friends…sing carols…

Our food Sarmale

“Sarmale” - cabbage and meat. “Sarmale” are eaten with cream

and “mamaligă”.

Pork meat with pepper, cabbage and tomatoes.

“Lichiul” is another type of cake with “gris”, cinnamon and other things.
