Small is Beaut iful As World War II came to an end, I was born. Likemany others of my generation, my parentswanted me to have the things theyd been

deprived of during those dark years becausethey were the fortunate ones who had survived.I grew up in the context of increasing prosperityand the heyday of t rade union power, whose catch phrases ofdown tools and everybody out struck terror into thehearts of employers. Wages increased and people boughthouses, carpets, fridges and vacuum cleaners through hirepurchase, or t he Never-Never as it was called, becausesome people never would m anage the repayment s.

By the time you read this Rody, Veronica and I will havereturned from our trek along the Camino to Santiago deCompostela but as I write we have as yet to depart. Ourrucksacks, ready and wait ing, contain everything we need forour journey, including a little food and medicines. Admittedly, its going to be a bit basic but we wont be cold, wet orhungry because we have good equipment and everything weneed to keep us well, clean and safe.

When Rody and I take our caravan on holiday however, welive in great comfort and can switch on a simple centralheating system when its cold, take a hot shower and cook adelicious meal. What always amazes us when we return ishow litt le it took to be happy and content and how muchunwanted stuff we have collected in our home.

Just in case you t hink Im about to say w e should all live m oremeagrely, think of the poor and become green Goody-Two-

Shoes, Im not. Our economy has become dependent uponus spending and what else can you do with m oney?

I do want to share this thought: How much stuff do I needto be happy, contented and fulfilled? But, you may ask, if Idont spend my life getting things, what else can I do withit? Jesus said som ething I find helpful: Seek first Godskingdom and all these things will be added to you. (Luke12:31)So, what is this kingdom? Perhaps it s time to find out !

    Christian greetings,

Note: from Sunday 19 th June I shall be star t ing a sermon series onth is very t heme. You are welcome to come along.

TEXT FOR THE MONTH1 Corinthians 13: 1 & 2If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, buthave not love, I am only a resounding gong or aclanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and canfathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have afaith that can move mountains, but have not love, I amnothing. The NIV BiblePrayer for t he Month.Glorious God, we praise you for your gift of love, that mostprecious of gifts which endures beyond all others. Most of allwe thank you for your gift of love given in your son dying forus on the cross. You teach us that love is not irritable or

resentful, insisting in its own way, bearing all things, believingin all things and enduring all things. We confess that our loveisnt always like that, sometimes it is shaken to almostbreaking point. We acknowledge our weaknesses and ask youto help us to show our love for ot hers in all we do and say. At atime when the subject of marriage is making headlines wecelebrate all that love can mean to m arried couples, to familiesand to all sharing their lives with others. We thank you for the

inspiration it has given, the happiness it has contributed to,and the security it has provided. We pray for your love t o guideus all, uniting us all in times of trial, supporting us in times ofsorrow and bringing us closer t o you.In Jesus nam e we pray . AmenPrayer Points for MayPray For..For peace in a world so full of bitterness and anger andespecially in Libya, the countries of North Africa and

Afghanistan. For our troops in Afghanistan facing daily the possibility ofinjury or death. Those who have been married or are about to be married inour churches this year and for all whose anniversaries fall inthis month. May their lives be guided by your Holy Spirit andmay they be aware of your presence throughout theirmarriages

Five Years On Loddon Players are stillt reading the boards! By Gill FearonIt all start ed with a coffee morning at t he

village hall in the spring of 2005 to officially open the newkitchen. One of the t hen Village Hall Management Committ ee(VHMC) members had dev ised a quest ionnaire to askparishioners what t hey would like to see in the village hall. Ithad occurred t o me before that day, that Sherfield did nothave its own drama group. As a member of Sherfield NationalWomens Register (NWR), I somet imes accompanied fellowm embers to watch Chris Horton perform in various plays atKingsclere, Tadley or Silchester and it gave m e the amdram bug! Why did we not start our own group here in the village? So I duly answered the questionnaire and then pu t in on t heback burner . Some weeks later I was approached by JaneBrydges, then Chairman of the VHMC who t old me that if Iwanted a drama group, then I had to start it m yself!Eventually Chris got w ind of m y suggestion and said, comeon, let s hold an open meeting and see what t here is in theway of support.

We held our first m eeting in t he Garden Room of t he villagehall in June and att racted quite a bit of interest. After a fewsessions, some people dropped out , but w e were left w ith asmall, but significant num ber of comm itted people andhaving considered many opt ions as to what w e should becalled, set t led on Loddon Players. We were very keen to getstarted on putt ing on a production and so on 18/19Novem ber we perform ed two short p lays, Shoppers and

The Fat Lady Sings in Lit t le Grim ley wit h Anthea Spurriersitt ing in the front row prom pting! Chris directed both playsand appeared with Alison Watt s in Shoppers. The cast forThe Fat Lady w as Peter Francis, Jane Brydges, Jane Torr andDanny Spurrier, all of whom are still with us! To make it a bitext ra special, we decided t o prov ide a supper and so SallyHennessey sourced good quality p loughm ans fare, and withmy help w e fed a hall full of people on both night s. Various

locals helped us behind the scenes, notab ly Brian Archer,Terry and Phillip Horton, Nick Robinson and Brian and Terry

Raisborough. In early 2006 we were ready to prepare for our secondproduct ion, which would be perform ed in April. Chris choseDay of Reckoning, a hilarious play about a village fete(which seemed a bit rem iniscent of our own) which we hadread at a NWR meeting and really enjoyed. This tim e wehired a stage and placed it at one end so that everyone had agood view. By now w e had acquired m ore members (oftencontacts of Chriss! ) and so were able to be a bit moreambit ious wit h size of cast. Once more we saw Jane Torr,Jane Brydges, Ali Watt s and Peter Francis on stage, but also

Jacqui Morr is, Alex Thom as, Sharon Hewins and MargotKonit zer. Nick Robinson becam e our set designer and was incharge of stage/set construct ion. By now Sally Hennesseyhad taken on props, box office, artwork and web design while

I dealt with all the secretarial dut ies and finances and

became the prom pt at rehearsals as well as on theproduct ion nights. We were rehearsing now in the BreachLane Chapel (kindly made available t o us by Geoff Belsham )

as the Garden Room was too near t he band practice on aWednesday!By June 2006 w e were celebrating our first anniversary andready to form a proper com mittee with a form al constitution. Our first commit tee consisted of Chr is in the Chair, Nick asVice-Chairm an, I became Secretary and Treasurer, and Peter,

Jacqui, and Sharon joined us. Now, near ly 6 years on, the firstfour are still there, but we now have Sally, Danny and MattStanley w ith us instead of Jacqui and Sharon. The nex t stepwas to become a charity and th is we achieved later that

summer. We do not set out t o make money, but any surpluswe have is ploughed back into the group for the nextproduct ion and to purchase new equipment for sound andlight ing. With t he aid of a local grant from the Hampshire andIsle of Wight Community Fund, in 2009 we put th is towards anew stage for t he village hall which is for the use of anygroup or h irer. As it is a modular stage, we can add bits to itas required, and t his we have done.

We now have ten productions behind us wit h our eleventh(Key for Two) in progress at t he t ime of writ ing. Daisy Pulls ItOff (directed by Sharon Hewins) was perform ed at Sherfield

School as the village hall was fully booked inNovember 2006. In 2007 we did Trivial Pursuits andBlithe Spirit , which again was performed at SherfieldSchool owing to the pet rol contamination at t he village hall.2008 saw Inspector Drake and the Perfekt Crim e and AChorus of Disapproval , which had the largest cast of all,tw elve, with t he addit ion of four ext ras. This was a massiveundertaking by Chris and we really appreciated theinvaluable help of Brian Archer, our Musical Director! TheTristram Trio (including What s for Pudd ing?, Joining t heClub and Last Tango in Litt le Grim ley ) and Noel Coward s

Private Lives (the first play t o be perform ed on the newstage) were perform ed in 2009. Unfortunately in the spring of2010 we were not able to find a director, so we had a breakbefore perform ing Agatha Christies Verdict at t he end ofSeptem ber/beginning of October , when Maria Hadnett cameto our rescue. This last play was a change from our previouscomedies and t herefore much harder to perform, but the castdid it justice and it w as deemed to be a success! As it

coincided with our fifth anniversary, we once again providedploughm ans (using t he same suppliers as before) on tw o ofthe nights, but t his t ime it was organised by Natalie Larnerand her team.Over t he years we have lost various mem bers Alison Watt s,Alex Thom as, Sharon Hewins, Kathy Percey and GordonSut ton, to name a few, but we have gained Matt Stanley,Gary Com erford, Jo Long, Denise Hobbs and Louise Hayling.

As well as acting in some of our p lays, Mat t , Gary and Jo havealso directed in fact Matt has now directed t hree. We alsohave t he invaluable help of Andy Large and Paul OGradywith our sound and light ing and a hard core of helpers whoare willing to assist us on our product ion nights with front ofhouse duties. It has all been enorm ous fun despite the hard work involved. We look forward to the next f ive years and beyond! Hello,

I don't know whether your readers can help me or not. I returned t oret ire in Basingstoke after living in S. California for 25 years. I wasborn on Bramley Road in Sherfield in 1933. My father CharlesPerrett was brought up from birth in 1910 by Nurse Wilde, who wasthe district m idwife for Sherfield & t he vicinity , & I believe also forthe Dukes of Wellington at Stratfield Saye House. I believe she livedin the house next to your village hall. I was here on vacation & inSherfield a few years back, & got t alking to a Mrs. West who knewall about Nurse Wilde & m y father. I lost contact with m y father at

the end of t he 2nd World War & haven't seen or heard from himsince. He was a Chief Pet ty Office Aircraft Artif icer in the RoyalNavy, my m other & he got divorced at the end of the war. I'mmainly trying to find out if anybody now in Sherfield knew of NurseWilde. I lived in Turgis Green in t he large house att ached to thegarage on the Reading Road during t he 2nd World War. My m other& her mother were born in the New Inn in at Stratfield Saye. Theirnam e is Holloway. I used to catch the bus to Basingstoke out sidethe pub in Sherfield to go to school at Queen Mary's Grammar

school. John Dodd (of t he garage) did so also.I would appreciate any informat ion you can give me.Thank you kind ly. Regards, Robin Perret t .

Our President , Dee Bulpit t, welcomed Members and visitors toour 88 th Birthday Meeting and remarked that none of us looked

our age!! ! She then t hanked other local W.I.s for their birthdaycards Sherborne St John, Basingstoke Afternoon, BasingstokeEvening and Bramley.Jerusalem was sung and although t he Minutes were not read, they were on t he table for perusal. In Val Denny s absence,Dee went th rough t he correspondence with us. She alsomentioned the Quilting Show in t he Hall tom orrow and theFlower Club Meeting on t he following Thursday afternoon.

Evelyn Holdaway gave the Treasurer s Report and severalother item s of business were dealt wit h. Those going on thetr ip t o Fishbourne and Chichester on 12 th April were remindedto be at the White Hart at 9.30 a.m. and Dee confirmed thatthere would be a walk t his month on April 14 th. Names weretaken for the Annual Quiz and Dee reminded Members to readup on t he Resolutions in WI Life ready for our vote in May. TheBusiness Meeting closed at 2 .25 p.m .

Dee then int roduced our Speaker for t he afternoon, Mrs ValNorm an whose subject was The Traditional Art of AmericanRug Hooking . Mrs Norm an began by t elling us that she camefrom a long line of crafters and spent several years inAmerica working in our Embassy fostering Anglo-Americanrelat ions. This is where she came across the craft of RugHooking and although t his start ed in Massachusett s, the craftoriginally came from England wit h the first sett lers. They had

so litt le that they had t o use everything unt il it was fallingapart and could not be used again. The rem ains (wool) weretorn into strips and hooked through sacking. Mrs Norman, after some rat her unfriendly reject ions, found a teacher whowas willing to share this craft wit h her (her dog liked Mrs N.)!Mrs Norm an illustrated her talk with some wonderful exam plesof her work and her enthusiasm for her subject just added t o avery enjoyable afternoon.

    Report by Chris Horton

Our latest meet ing was about wedd ings. Cather ine supplied somefacts about marriage: there were 233,000 m arriages in the UK in

2008 and 113 ,000 divorces. She asked Do we care about t he RoyalWedding? . The majority said Yes . A couple of those who saidthey didnt care are self emp loyed and would probably be workingthat day.South Africa: Chris told us of her trip to Johannesburg and a wedd ingin 1990. With photos, she explained how the civil service was verysim ilar to t he UK. It w as a low key event (second marriage for bothparties) with a small reception held at home afterwards. We then m oved t o Brazil, Susan told how she had lived in Brazil as a

child. Theres lots of loud music, samba and celebrations and likeours, the bride generally arrives 10 minutes after the groom. Theengagement r ing is worn in the right hand and then swapped to theleft after the ceremony and, rather amusingly, as a mem ento of theday the grooms tie is cut up and distributed among t he guests.Hazel told us about China: I have a friend who is Chinese and haveseen a Chinese wedding . It is hugely rit ualist ic with m any changes ofdress, banquet s and cerem onies. An auspicious date is chosen especially dates with 2s, for example 2 February 2002.

India was our nex t stop was India and Joan told us about a Sikhwedding. The engagement ceremony is the same day as themarriage. Child marr iages are now forbidden. Joan attended a Sikhwedding and circulated phot os showing us the colourful costum es.Judit h described Jewish weddings which have very com plex andinteresting rituals. theres some plate smashing and the groomsmashes a glass and grinds it w ith h is right foot; t here are manyinterpretat ions for this.Esme was invit ed to a Greek wedding. The bride has to prom ise to

look after her in laws who have another t ier built on t heir house forthe newly weds to live in. Theres lots of dancing and the servicetook place in a magnificent Greek Orthodox Church. In Holland, SallyH explained, there HAS to be a civil service first before any Churchservice. Holland was the first country to perm it gay marriages andwe learnt the origins of the Bridal Shower. A current t radit ion inHolland is a wishing tree upon wh ich the guests place a writt en wishfor the couple.Sally circulated pict ures of various items used t radit ionally as well as

a wedding w ith guests in nat ional costume. Finally Sally K told us ofher experience of French weddings while she was a resident inFrance and also told us about a French funeral
