Mission StatementTRIUMF is Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics. It is owned and operated as a joint venture by a consortium of Canadian universities via a contribution through the gNational Research Council Canada with building capital funds provided by the government of British Columbia. Its mission is:
• To make discoveries that address the most compelling questions in• To make discoveries that address the most compelling questions in particle physics, nuclear physics, nuclear medicine, and materials science;
• To act as Canada's steward for the advancement of particle accelerators and detection technologies; and
• To transfer knowledge train highly skilled personnel and• To transfer knowledge, train highly skilled personnel, and commercialize research for the economic, social, environmental, and health benefit of all Canadians.

Worldwide Medical Isotope Crisis
• Canada traditionally supplies >35% of global demand for most-popular medical isotope (Mo-99/Tc-99m)most popular medical isotope (Mo 99/Tc 99m)– NRU nuclear reactor at Chalk River
• Recent challenges– 50 year old device: reactor no longer will produce Tc-99m >2016– Technology requires highly-enriched uranium from U.S.
• TRIUMF leads a national effort to use accelerators to produce Tc-99m (no HEU)– NSERC/CIHR and NRCan/NISP completed and successful– NRCan/ITAP: BCCA, London, CPDC/McMaster
